This Caldecott Honor book from beloved illustrator Peter Spier is a spirited take on a classic American folk song.

"[Spier's] finely detailed, action-packed New England autumn vistas are almost startlingly beautiful."—
The New York Times

Over fifty years after he won a Caldecott Honor for
The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night, legendary illustrator Peter Spier went back to this time-honored favorite in 2014 to paint the half of the book that was originally printed in black and white. In this glowing, restored vision of Spier’s beloved classic, follow the wily fox as he roams a sleepy New England town in search of a meal, with tones and textures so vivid you can almost hear the crackle of crisp fall leaves and the ripples of the river in the moonlight.

A Caldecott Honor Book

An American Bookseller Pick of the Lists

"[Spier's] finely detailed, action-packed New England autumn vistas are almost startlingly beautiful."—
The New York Times

From the Publisher

A timeless folk song provides inspiration for some of the funniest, brightest drawings Peter Spier has ever produced. In the song, a fox forages for food in the village to bring to his family back in the den. The music is also included so everyone can sing along.

A Caldecott Honor Book, An American Bookseller Pick of the Lists.

A piece of childhood in my hands

A piece of childhood in my hands
My grandma used to sing a regional version of this to my brother and I as kids (it was our favorite lullaby, so much so, that we asked her to sing it into our mid-teens). My Mom recently divulged that it was actually our late Grandpa (a Mainer, who died when she was little) who taught them the song. When I found this little picture book, I immediately ordered a few copies (and as my brother is engaged, and a few friends are dating, I’ll probably be ordering more eventually. ;) ).My older relatives used this story (and others of a kind) to gently explain sensitive topics to us kids. We got to learn, grow, and face hard truths about the world in a safe and protected environment where we could ask questions to understand. I highly recommend using books like this for that!Things to note:Story summary is that a fox goes out, kills a goose and duck, farmer chases it, fox provides for his family. This story isn’t modern day PC, so some parents/guardians will probably have issues because of it mentioning death/the foxes killing & eating the pilfered poultry. And that is okay. Sheltering their children in such a manner should be respected, as it is a decision made in love.

One of our favorite children's books. Excellent art work and an adorable timeless story--whose roots date back to the Middle Ages.

I used to sing this to my children and they loved it , even though the story is kind of dark and gory: foxes stealing and eating ducks and geese Our paperback copy from 30 years ago was worn out, so I bought the updated version for the grandkids. It’s a catchy tune that toddlers like to join in on the repetitive chorus.

I've been buying this book for years and giving it as gifts to parents and grandparents of small children.

The illustrations are phenomenal - Peter Spier at his best. Having grown up on a farm and losing the occasional chicken to a predator made the reality of the tale meaningful and brought some levity to the loss. Seeing the fox parents preparing the poultry for their 10 little foxes brings a smile every time.

There are several bluegrass versions of the song online and children love to hear the song sung. If you need help with the music, watch online - or refer to the music at the back of the book.

When I was a child, the book was only half color plates; every other page was black and white. There's a summary at the end of the book explaining how Mr. Spier colorized the other pages, with identical paints decades after the book's first printing.

Vegans might not appreciate the story, but I've yet to meet a child who didn't love it.

Beautiful illustrations to a classic old time song that I sing to my grandsons.

The illustrations alone are worth the buy! The story is cute but it’s sing song so I’m usually cutting out the repeat words. The illustrations are beautiful!!

Learn this old folk song and sing it with kids! Art, music, and lterature together; all of which, as we know, make life worthwhile. Based on a poem in England as far back as the 1400s, the tune is unforgettable. I sang it as a child and have re-memorized it. Peter Spier definitely deserved the Silver Caldecott medal. My only reservation is that the lyrics should have been written as we actually sing the song. (A better version of the lyrics on Wikipedia.)

I originally got thus book out of the library, nearly 40 years ago, for my eldest son. We both loved it so much that we bought it (along with other Peter Speirs books). My original copy is still going strong and enjoyed by my grandchildren, but I bought a new one for my youngest grandson's second birthday, so his daddy can read it to him at home. This is a special edition with more coloured pages, and some slight changes in the words. I ignore the word changes ( I don't know why they were necessary) but like the extra colours. When you've sung it as many times as I have, you don't need the words anyway!
