A house full of paintings, a missing sister, and a family secret send a boy and his cousin into a world where art is the key in this fantasy adventure perfect for fans of The Wingfeather Saga and Pages & Co.

“A delightful adventure, excellent for reading aloud. This book will make you want to study Van Gogh and get out the paintbrushes!”—Sarah Mackenzie, founder and host of Read-Aloud Revival® and author of The Read-Aloud Family

After an experience he’d rather forget, Vincent is determined to be done with art. So when he and his little sister, Lili, spend spring break with their art conservator great-uncle, Vincent’s plan is to stay glued to his phone.

That is, until Lili disappears
into one of the world’s most famous paintings and Vincent learns his parents have been hiding something from him: Their family is the last of The Restorationists, a secret society with the power to travel through paintings—and a duty to protect them from evil forces.

With Lili’s safety on the line, leaving art behind is no longer an option. Vincent must team up with his know-it-all second-cousin Georgia, wrestle with why his parents lied to him, and confront both his past and a future he never wanted. Young readers are invited into a captivating universe where paintings become a portal—and adventure and danger lurk beyond every canvas.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Colorful descriptions will send curious readers searching for images of the paintings mentioned, while discussions of art as a vehicle for the expression of truth and beauty add depth to a plot . . . [Vivienne] To’s expressive, delicately rendered illustrations enhance the text.”Kirkus Reviews

An incredible art study along with a great story!

An incredible art study along with a great story!
The world of art was explored in such a powerful and unique way through this incredible young adult fantasy novel! Carolyn Leiloglou's writing is so engaging, and her heart for art, its purpose, its beauty, and Jesus, are clear. There were so many one-liners and passages that made us stop and just take the thought in without over-moralizing or preaching. This book was a full art study, with so many references to excellent works of art throughout the book! The primary artist explored was Vincent Van Gogh, though others were also introduced or discussed. In our family, we have enjoyed exploring a variety of artists and their works, and were thrilled to be introduced to so many new-to-us works! We kept my phone or computer nearby to pull each one up as we went. The works of art we were familiar with were met with celebration when they came into the story! My girls and I would highly recommend this book for ages 8-12.We thoroughly enjoyed this book, and are eagerly waiting for when Book 2 comes out!

This was such a great read, I pretty much read it in one day on a camping trip. The characters are easy to connect with and it, made me want to go look up certain paintings mentioned that I was not familiar with. I love how the story supports relationships among family members; so often the middle grade/YA genres stories tend to create division between the characters and their parents/siblings. This story does a good job of showing how the characters might question the decisions of the adults in the story, but they eventually find why those decisions were made for their good. I also love the theme of how we were made to create, whether it be with paint, music, words, or whatever, and to not give up that joy just because you might not be the best, and also exploring the question of what the purpose of art is. The ending was satisfying, but left room for a sequel. This book is perfect for both the art loving kid as well as those who don't realize what they're missing when it comes to art. Definitely a great addition to any study of Van Gogh!

Beneath a Swirling Sky is fast paced, engaging, and full of adventure. The story is based on the idea that certain groups of people can Travel into paintings, a skill that can be used for great good, or terrible ill. New revelations about Traveling lie around every corner, as the reader learns about it alongside Vincent, who finds himself forced into this strange new world of magic and art. He must rescue his sister with the help of his "weird” cousin, Georgia. Along the way must come to terms with his own rejection of art, face his past, and perhaps stop something even more sinister than he imagined.
Beneath a Swirling Sky dives into important topics while being simple enough for middle grade readers to understand. It is no secret that kids change drastically when they move into middle school, often ditching much of their creativity to blend in with the crowd (I know I did). Beneath a Swirling Sky teaches kids not to buy into this lie. When I look back on myself in middle school, I know that this book would have told me exactly what I needed to hear.
Vincent, though perhaps a less interesting protagonist in himself (a la Harry Potter), is a needed hero in a world that teaches kids to stop creating. Georgia is spunky, fun, and (bonus points!) an actually accurate representation of a homeschooler. Lilli is adorable, Ravi is positively mysterious, and the villain (no spoilers!) is revealed in a fantabulous plot twist.
As soon as I opened this book, the magic system transported me into a new world, just as Vincent was transported into Starry Night. Not only is the magic system behind Traveling unique—it is also well organized. As characters travel through paintings, the reader is immersed in adventure and history at the same time. As an artist and art history nerd, this book was truly a delight to read. Everything was so well researched, and this quality alone makes Beneath a Swirling Sky a great read for older teens too. It was really hard for me to put this book down. This book is not your typical YA or middle grade fantasy.
Art-centric fiction is almost impossible to find in the middle grade and YA genre. Beneath a Swirling Sky fills this void. This book reminds kids who live in a STEM and AI dominated world that art does matter. The things they create have value, and the arts are worth pursuing. Distortions may not be real, but the power of creativity and friendship is, and this is exactly the takeaway of Beneath a Swirling Sky.
Read this book. You won’t regret it.

I read this to my kids, who are 8, 10, and 12, and it’s an exciting, fun, trippy-cool story where the art literally sucks you in … a phenomena exploited by a secret society of criminals and the spies who must stop them, and stumbled upon by the lead kids in this story.

We’d just read “Land of Stories” together before this, where kids fall into a fairy tale world (kinda meh for me), so we half expected the same kind of "other world" idea here, but we were way off - this was really something new and cool.

You can’t read this without a device on hand to look up all the artwork and history referenced in the book, and I learned a lot of cool factoids from it, and we had some great conversations after each reading. Chilling moments, good twists, excitement, character, thought provoking commentary about creating and loving art… I highly recommend it!

Parents note: The book contains nothing I found objectionable as a parent, even though the story gets exciting and suspenseful, nothing was upsetting to my kids. We've read CS Lewis, Hobbit, Redwall, Wingfeather, Land of Stories, the first Harry Potter, etc.

Beneath the Swirling Sky pulls readers into the world of art and the journey of understanding the true reason for our gifts.

Strengths:
My 9-year-old asked if there's a second book as we neared the end—a sure sign of a good book in our household.
Appreciated the depth of characters woven throughout the narrative.
Faith aspect incorporated throughout the book, but in a thoughtful manner.

Additional Notes:
Opportunities to learn more about various artists, their creations, and techniques provide an interesting educational backdrop to the plot.

My kids are ages 10, 8, 8 & 5 and we (including me) all LOVED LOVED this book! The story is a fun adventure but adds ins so much about art and how important it is to lean into your gifts and passions. It teaches great character and is a great intro into what an art museum is like and then names of big museums.
I have sent this book to so many people. I hope there are more coming in this series!
