About the author

Cathleen Armstrong grew up in New Mexico among people much like the landscape there—spare, weathered, and rock solid. With a style that has been described as “comfortable as a well-worn pair of jeans,” her books deal with the longing we all have to find our heart’s’ home, that place we we can feel accepted and forgiven and loved. The New Mexico ranchers, farmers, and small business owners who populate her books are, for the most part, people of faith, even if they don’t always show it.
Despite having roots that remain deep in New Mexico, Cathleen has lived many years in California. She recently moved back to Orange County where she lives with her husband, Ed, and is enjoying spending time with children and grandchildren. She is a member of ACFW, ACFW-OC, RWA and Faith, Hope, and Love Chapter of RWA. Her first book, Welcome to Last Chance, won the ACFW Genesis award. Learn more at CathleenArmstrong.com

- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2020As a man, I'm sure I would never have considered reading these based on the cover art alone. But the author is a close friend who I had lost track of, and when I found out she was writing fiction, I had to try the first one. I have now read, and thoroughly enjoyed, all of them, and I'm waiting for more.
These are definitely romance novels, but if you have to have them "steamy", forget it. There is nothing here that can be considered morally offensive, unless you find sincere morality itself offensive. One reviewer said something like, "the books claim to be Christian fiction, but if so it's subtle and not at all obvious". That could only mean that the reviewer didn't feel slapped in the face by judgmental prose. I get that; but, to those of us who approve of Christian themes, there is nothing subtle here.
Author Cathy told me that I might not like them because they are tame, with no car or helicopter chases. Well, if you have to have nonstop action, they may be tame, but she just forgot--there IS a car chase in book 1, and it has helicopters, too! To me there is nothing boring about these books. The characters are well defined, the situations and relationships are believable, the locations are fictionalized, but true to life, and in each book there is a theme of personal growth and redemption.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2016A good story and I like the fact that the Author writes other books that continue on with the lives of the characters. So many Authors only write one book. Just when you get to the happy ending. You don't get to follow what happens after they get together. I like to hear more about their lives after they get together. This Author wrote more than one book on their lives. I like that.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2016The second book in A Place To Call Home Series is just as good as the first. One More Last Chance features Chris Reed, the new owner of the Dip 'n ' Dine in Last Chance. I laughed just about every time he tried to put something new on the menu. Carlos, the cook for twenty years, threatened to quit and Juanita, the part time waitress and full time gossip, told all the customers that Chris needed time to adjust to the way things were done.
Sarah Cooley was the most beautiful woman Chris had ever seen, Unfortunately, Chris seems to lose his ability to act or talk like a normal person whenever he goes near her. Sarah is happy to be back in her hometown where she is near her family and excited to be teaching second grade at the local school. Sarah is also happy to put space between herself and a controlling, longtime boyfriend. She's not so sure they are meant to be.
The rest of the characters are interesting and fully realized. The plot is well developed and character driven. There is no graphic sex, language or violence. I bought the third book and was pleased to discover there is also a fourth book. Buying another book is the highest compliment I can give a writer. If you've never read anything by Cathleen Armstrong, the first book, Welcome To Last Chance, in this series is a good place to start.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2017After reading the first book in this series, Welcome to Last Chance, couldn't wait to read One More Last Chance (A Place to Call Home). I was not disappointed in the least as it was an exciting book that kept me turning pages as fast as I could and managed to read it in one day. The author has a great feel for making her characters strong, believable and also that you would like to have as friends.
Sarah has come back to Last Chance to be where things never change. Chris Reed has come to Last Chance because he's bought a diner there and wants to change things up for the small town. Not always a good mix and there are many surprises to go around. Sarah has taken an instant dislike to Chris and things get crazy.
Read it and enjoy it. I recommend it!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2016I enjoyed this book a lot. more than the first in the series, which i also liked. Chris was definitely my favorite character, although I did feel he needed to man up just a little bit and not allow people to walk all over him. I did not understand why he couldn't be a little cool around Sarah since she was not very nice to him at all. I know she started to warm up to him but she still had attitude and if Chris is anything like I picture in my mind, (not just looks but the whole person) it seems like she still did not have enough appreciation for him. I kept waiting for that, but anyway. I still loved the book. I liked the character of Olivia as well. Now that I have finished, I miss this book! maybe i'll read book #3 sometime :)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2016Chris Reed now the owner of the only diner in Lost Chance he kept the name but he wAnts to add to the menu. CArlos the cook says he will quit and Juanita says the peoples left won't go for it. Chris is a chef who worked in restaurant in Albuquerque and wants to cook in his own diner. He has helps s eyes on Sarah Cooley the new school teacher who came back to live in Last Chance after being gone for a while. Chris has other problems fallen to his shoulders his niece Olivia his sister Kaitlyn who had a baby y at seventeen and is very immature. I liked this story and all the characters of this town you will enjoy this to I am sure.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2015The story line was good. In some ways, it seemed to be a little too good to be true. The child character was way too bratty, I thought. The lead character's not recognizing the cheating boyfriend sooner, I thought since she is a teacher and supposed to be intelligent, I thought this was a little off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy enjoyable read
Second in the series about Last Chance. In this book we meet high class chef Chris who has just bought the Dip 'n' Dine. There is amusement when he tries to make his stamp on it inspire of Carlos the chef who is ably supported by the locals When Chris meets Sarah and is forced to become guardian to his 7 year old niece Olivia The story picks up pace. All the usual likeable characters are there and of course cannot help 'lending a hand". say enjoyable read

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed and encouraging!
I have read this series of books and found them very interesting in the overall theme of the people "getting a second chance" to put life together. A strong christian theme draws the strings of life together giving hope, grace and love. The stories are not "preachy". However, the many challenges we all face in our life can add to our characters and personalities.

4.0 out of 5 stars I loved Chris right from the start
This story drew me in right from the beginning. First there is Chris, the new diner owner, wants to make some changes to the diner. Then there is Sarah who has just moved back home to teach 2nd grade and loves that Last Chance doesn't change. As Chris is just beginning to adjust to his new routine, he becomes responsible for his niece and he doesn't have any idea what to do with a 7 year old kid. This book is filled with some quickly characters, such as Juanita, and some godly examples, such as Elizabeth. I loved Chris right from the start, he seemed genuine and I really wanted things to go well for him. If only his staff would embrace some of the changes he wants to make. Sarah on the other hand took me a while to warm up to. I liked how she showed her love for her grandma, but I didn't like her hostile attitude towards Chris at the beginning when she didn't even try to get to know him first. My favourite character has to be Elizabeth, she is a godly example of we should interact with others and we can all learn from her. I look forward to reading the next in the series.
