Fan Favorite Suzanne Woods Fisher Offers Readers Tender Romance, Humor, and Plenty of Surprises

Bright, curious, and restless, Ruthie Stoltzfus loves her family but is stuck in a sea of indecision about her future: Should she stay Amish? Or should she leave? She's done all she can to prepare to go--passed the GED, saved her money--but she can't quite set her journey into motion.

Patrick Kelly is a young man on a journey of his own. He's come to Stoney Ridge to convert to the Amish and has given himself thirty days to learn the language, drive a buggy, and adapt to "everything Plain." Time, to Patrick, is of the essence. Every moment is to be cherished, especially the hours he spends with Ruthie, his Penn Dutch tutor.

Ruthie's next-door neighbor and cunning ex-boyfriend, Luke Schrock, is drawn to trouble like a moth to a flame. Rebellious, headstrong, defiant, Luke will do anything to win Ruthie back--
anything--and Patrick Kelly is getting in his way.

Bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher invites readers back to Stoney Ridge for a story of dreams deferred and hopes fulfilled--complete with Fisher's signature twists that never fail to leave readers delighted.

Not Realistic - ? Amish Culture and Medical Information

Not Realistic - ? Amish Culture and Medical Information
Suzanne Woods Fisher’s “The Bishop’s Family” has numerous errors – both, those to do with the Amish culture, and also with medical conditions. The errors are bad enough that it was difficult to read the material. First and foremost, MS is NOT a death sentence as she suggests. Pre-Covid, those with MS generally had a life expectancy of almost 76 years. (Life expectancy for everyone is down Since-Covid). Secondly, the author also had the town doctor tell a mother of a toddler who had put a pea in their nose to bring the child in later that afternoon. Unfortunately, a pea is prone to swelling, and could close off the toddler’s airway. Therefore, it is considered a medical emergency. The doctor had an empty waiting room, and had no reason to delay treatment. At the very least, the doctor should have sent the mother to an emergency room or clinic. Finally, the author too-quickly healed a character with pernicious anemia. She had the patient recovering in a matter of days rather than weeks or months as is the norm. The injection schedule for the patient’s shots were also erroneous, and in "real life," are most likely to be administered in the abdomen or thigh rather than the upper arm (but to be honest, that might be done somewhere). This type of medical disinformation is a serious problem, even if the books are fictional. At the very least either the author, or the publisher should have used the Internet to find the correct information. As to the Amish culture, it is clear that the author has not spoken with anyone Amish for any length of time. Although the Amish do complete schooling to the eighth grade, and some districts allow for reading other than the Bible, the vocabulary of the Amish is not at all as the author suggests. In fact, her characters, especially in “The Devoted,” are about the most worldly Amish I have ever encountered - in print, and in life. I won’t be reading any more of her work.

This final book of the series, The Devoted, focuses on the character of Ruthie Stolzfus who is the daughter of the bishop in Stoney Ridge. We meet the community of Amish and the Stolzfus family in the first book titled, The Imposter and then the story continues in The Quieting. What I enjoy most about the novels isn’t the focus on the Amish per se, but the human factor that is present no matter what community one belongs to. With the human element, readers will come across one character named Luke who is trying to find his way through life, but his choices bring dire consequences.
Ruthie thinks she might want to leave the Amish like the Bishop David’s sister did so she can be freer in ways she cannot as an Amish woman. I enjoyed the multifaceted tensions in the story line of the novels that were spiritual in many ways and also relational. I enjoyed David’s character the most as he seeks God in the Word, prayer and meditation. Plus, David doesn’t want to begin taking shortcuts to hurry people through to baptism. He likes to give God time to work on the heart instead of browbeating as some in the community want to do. I also enjoyed seeing how older women in the community helped the younger woman with some of the struggles of life as they grew older. In our day and age, we could use more of this passing on of wisdom, opening heart and home to young woman.
The idea of taking in a woman who is searching for God and needing to learn even the basic household tasks or taking care of an elderly woman who is alone is I think a wonderful idea. I hope you read and enjoy all three novels in the series as I did. Suzanne writes with such heart and realism that is unique and makes the stories unforgettable!

Another great book by Suzanne Woods Fisher. Enjoyed this book to the very end....as usual... but left a question or two in my mind!
Hoping that there will be another in this series! So enjoyed Bishop David, and his caring ways, towards his flock of people.
Suzanne does her research very well, and even digs into research other problems, as they arrive in her stories.
I can always expect a well rounded, very interesting book, with surprising twists, AND, I have never been disappointed!
SO ANXIOUS for THE NEWCOMER to be released, as it is continues the story of ANNA'S CROSSING, in a different historical
series, about the first Amish/Mennonites who had to flee their countries, to avoid more persecution.

This third entry in The Bishop's Family trilogy could not have been more heartfelt or riveting. Ruthie's evolving relationship with newcomer, Patrick Kelly brings her a peace and contentment she's never known. Luke Schrock, Stoney Ridge's delinquent, is losing control of his life. David, the Bishop, is the conscience of Stoney Ridge. He sees that the growing prosperity from oil drilling is taking away the tradition of working together for the common good of the community. It is a joy to see his renewed relationship with his sister who left the Amish to become a doctor. David and Birdy are now married. So much is happening and changing for all the characters I've come to love.

Well written continuation of the Bishop's Family! This book shows how we don't know what we truly want for ourself in life. We don't always remember that the Lord God has the first and last word in our life and we can dream and He moves where it is best for us to be
