Can love redeem a broken past?

Shelby Kincaid is ready to move forward after the death of her husband left her devastated. With high hopes for the future, she longs to purchase her family's homestead, Misty Willow, so she can raise her young daughters in the only place she ever truly belonged. She plans to transform the abandoned house into the perfect home of her memories. But she has her work cut out for her.

AJ Sullivan never wanted Shelby's family homestead in the first place. His grandfather left it to him as punishment for not following his wishes, and he's let it fall into ruin. AJ's more than happy to unload it to this spitfire of a woman. But even after angry exchanges over the state of the house, he can't get her off his mind.

With writing that evokes a strong sense of place and family history, Johnnie Alexander deftly explores the ties that bind us to home--and the irresistible forces that draw us to each other.

Review of Where She Belongs by Johnnie Alexander

Shelby Kincaid is trying to put her life back together, trying to recapture the carefree days of her childhood. Her two daughters need freedom from the heaviness that has been haunting Shelby since her teenaged years.

After her husband’s passing, Shelby leaves Chicago to return to Misty Willow – not far from Columbus, Ohio – with plans to restore the family farm, stolen by the conniving Sullivans years before. If only AJ Sullivan and his grandmother, Joyanna, weren’t so agreeable, so ready to return the place Shelby loves… If only AJ Sullivan wasn’t a kind high-school teacher that most-often resembles a hometown knight in shining armor.

Slapped with a lawsuit that challenges her right to live at Misty Willow, Shelby discovers that someone she trusts has been hiding a terrible secret about her beloved grandfather. But history comes to the rescue as AJ defies his family and Shelby’s long-held misconceptions about the Sullivan clan.

Johnnie Alexander deftly weaves an abiding love for past and legacy into the telling of AJ and Shelby’s tale. Early chapters introduce the reader to the laid-back Misty Willow world, but tension and intrigue increase throughout. Her story telling skills are apparent within the smooth, descriptive style that draws readers in.

Where She Belongs boasts realistic dialogue, believable scenarios, and a satisfying happily ever after that leaves the reader eagerly anticipating book two in the Misty Willow series. With light humor and a sprinkling of classic movie lines, this inspirational, Christian romance is a highly recommended read.

"A place to belong", is all that widow Shelby Kincaid wants when she leases a portion of her grandparents' historic property from a member of the Sullivan family; the family who reportedly swindled it away from the Lassiters during a decades old feud. Shelby's happy memories from childhood visits to Misty Willow are a gift that she wants to bestow on her two young daughters, who are still reeling from the death of their father.

One of A. J. Sullivan's grandmother's dying wishes was that Shelby Kincaid be able to live at Misty Willow. Finding a loophole in Sully Sullivan's tight legal parameters on the property, even in death, was no easy task, but one glimpse at Shelby Kincaid's euphoria, nearly takes A.J.'s breath away, . . . that is, until Shelby realizes that he is a "Sullivan". A. J. , his lovable dog, and his subtle generosity begin to erode Shelby's defenses, but there is much more at stake than Shelby's dreams; A. J. and his family have many more "ghosts in their closets", some of which may destroy Shelby's sense of belonging after all.

This is an impressive book, highlighting many deep, personal aspects of life, love, family, faith . . . nevertheless, resounding with hope. After all, " He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me". Psalm 18:19

Loved this book and the characters Shelby and AJ! Powerful message about God working through the details and bringing them to their 'spacious place.' The author did a masterful job of including special verses from the Bible and incorporating a Christian message throughout while still making it relevant to a modern story. I liked that the characters were realistic and flawed but wanted to put the past behind them. Several storylines were going on that will be interesting to follow in later books. Can't wait to read more of her writing. I have a new favorite author!

Ultimately, this was a sweet romance with flawed characters that ended happily. Some of the story felt bumpy for me, where I wondered about the character reactions and storyline directions. Shelby starts off hating AJ but he manages to push past the walls she sets up.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author has written a story that is a combination of intriguing characters that aren't always what they seem to be, family secrets, past hurts, conflict, faith and romance that certainly kept me reading. I definitely will be looking forward to the next book in the series. This is another book from this author that I certainly recommend.

I was totally impressed. Usually there are hints given toward the beginning of a story so if the reader picks up on them, the ending is fairly obvious. However, Johnnie Alexander wrote in a way that I, as the reader, seemed to experience surprises at the same time the H or h did, as the story progressed. I also liked that it was a "clean" romance...a touch of scripture here and there, but I didn't find it overwhelming or distracting. I look forward to reading the next story in the series.
