This book is not only a good self read, but I think its even better when it can be discussed with a group. At the end of each chapter there are reflective questions and it creates a great guided open dialogue.

One of the points I related the most to was the topic of dissatisfaction within our calling. Miller tells the story of how she became dissatisfied within her calling at one point in time. Wise mentors spoke to Sharon, kindly stating ministry can’t be about us. She confessed how she had made her calling about herself, and how her satisfaction within her purpose was diminishing. She reflects on words from her advisors, as we die more, God gives us greater influence because we are no longer pointing to ourselves. “God was using my smallness to deal with my character and prune my heart.” Miller artfully brings together wisdom from others and makes the point that success is fleeting, and ultimately God was giving her mercy through the feeling of dissatisfaction to reveal to her that only He can truly satisfy her, not a rising career or accolades. “He was letting me experience how miserable it is to make my calling about me, so that I would stop and turn back before I went any further… Dissatisfaction is torment but it is also a teacher.” So many times I’ve run from those feelings of discontentment, trying to fill it with anything but Christ, especially when it comes to work or the topic of calling. All this time I’ve sought a career I longed to enjoy, or I’ve wondered why I wasn’t “happy” in the season I was in, when it was right there all this time: I needed to raise my gaze and receive the satisfying love of God! No job, no advancement, and no lead can give us peace and deep joy like the love and fulfillment of Jesus Christ. Sharon Hodde Miller doesn’t just leave us with all the ways we tend to drift toward self-focus, she gives us four powerful tools to help us “raise our gaze” purposefully.
