Editorial Reviews
From the Back Cover
Our me-centered culture affects every area of our lives--our relationships, calling, self-image, even our faith--and it negatively impacts each one. The self-focused life robs our joy, shrinks our souls, and is the reason we get stuck in insecurity.
In Free of Me, Sharon Hodde Miller invites us into a bigger, Jesus-centered vision--one that restores our freedom and inspires us to live for more. Drawing from personal experience and Scriptural insight, Sharon helps readers
· understand how self-focus sabotages seven areas of our lives

· experience freedom from the burden of self-focus
If you've been yearning for more than a self-help faith, then this paradigm-shifting message of true fulfillment is for you.
"Sharon spotlights the crippling disease of self-focus and shows us how to break free from its entanglements. If you want to walk in God's life-giving truth, this book will help you do just that!"--Lysa TerKeurst, New York Times bestselling author; president of Proverbs 31 Ministries
"One of the best things for a healthy marriage, workplace, parent situation, or any calling is to realize the world is not orbiting around our axis. True joy is found when we realize there is a bigger story to tell. In Free of Me, Sharon paints this picture more beautifully than anyone I know."--Jefferson Bethke, author of Love That Lasts

Easy read. Chapters are short.
Personal opinion, this book would be appropriate/recommend for high school age and up.
With a strong theological understanding and a relatable voice, Sharon opens up honestly about her own struggles with self-preoccupation, allowing her experiences to lovingly convict and reveal places where the reader may also be making life about them. With chapters on making God about you, your family about you, your possessions about you, and your church and calling about you, Sharon shows us how we can often fail to live the free life we have gained in Christ when we look inward instead of raising our gaze to Him.
Sharon doesn’t just leave us with knowledge of our problem; she delves into action steps we can take to start claiming the freedom we can have from making life about us and instead focusing on praising God, serving others, and dying to self without neglecting self.
This book is a must-read for anyone who feels like there is something missing from some of the teachings for women today. It’s message is so practical that I find myself thinking about it as I go about my day and as I reflect on my experiences and interactions with others. Perfect for a book study with reflection questions and scriptures, I plan to share this book with others in my church.
While you could easily read this alone, doing this as a small group study made it so impactful. Right Now Media has videos that cover a few of the chapters. Over the six weeks we met, the chapters didn't line up with the videos, but we read three chapters a week, and one video each meeting. So even though we had read chapters 9-11 one week, we watched the video that lined up with Chapter 5. There is also a Leader Guide provided through the website that covers each chapter. The only thing that would have made this better is if the videos lined up better with what chapters we had read that week and our meetings. Otherwise, this was a great study for a small/accountability group.

It challenges the subject of self-esteem radically and rather shows how our esteem should come from God and our insufficiencies are not to be treated as malfunctions but as points of compassion and connection with others. I will definitely re-read this over and again. I recommend it to everyone!!
