2018 Sydney Taylor Notable Book for Younger Readers
2018 GANYC Apple Award Nominee―Outstanding Achievement in Fiction NYC Book Writing

"A tasty slice of New York City immigrant lore."―
Kirkus Reviews

"Both tale and art . . . bring readers back to the turn of the last century, but this story, with its keen observation of human nature, feels very much of today. A welcome jaunt that will be fun to share with young listeners."―
Booklist

"A joyful story of people who take pride in their own work, but eventually realize a fundamental truth: there's no such thing as too many knishes."―
The Horn Book

"The comic pen and ink illustrations perfectly complement the rollicking text that serves as a great read-aloud."―The Association of Jewish Libraries

A funny jaunty story that shares a little piece of immigrant history and, of course, knish recipes! Beautifully told and wonderfully illustrated. Also Jewish content, NYC history, and a good laugh for any young reader!

Read it with my five-year-old grandson, who ate it up. We're going to try to make knishes, too. Very good blend of history and fiction.

Just discovered that my picture book is listed as a nominee for the Guides Association of New York Apple Award, but I'm proud to say, The Knish War on Rivington Street won the award for Guides Association of New York Apple Award for Outstanding Achievement in Fiction NYC Book Writing. It also won the 2018 Sydney Taylor Notable Book for Younger Readers, and was selected as a PJ book selection. It was recently made available on Kindle. Booklist called it, "A welcome jaunt that will be fun to share with young listeners." Based on a historic competition and price war between two knisheries. The battle over which kind is best, round or square, ends with recipes for knishes you can make, taste and decide for yourselves. Thanks for the great reviews from so many readers! joanneoppenheim.com

There really was a knish war in Manhattan – it was reported on in The New York Times on January 27, 1916, at 150 Rivington and 155 Rivington Streets. Mr Green faced off with Mr London. This is a fictional account and reimagining what happened on the streets of Manhattan's Lower East Side. In this version, Benny's family owns a shop and sells round knishes for five cents each. The Tisch family opens a shop across the street; they sell their knishes square. They say they are famous knishes. But benny's papa sniffs at the adjective "famous." Benny's mother lowers their price to 4 cents to match the Tisch price. So, Mrs. Tisch lowers her price to 3 cents. The agglomeration and concentration of knish sales actually increases overall sales and competiton.. but the price war gets out of hand. The mayor of NYC gets involved. Can Benny and Solly convince their parents that a war leaves casualties on both sides? Perhaps if the city government set up a special trade zone or promoted the area with public funds, the war can end? The author includes recipes for both types of knishes. Note: 150 Rivington later became the Streit's Matzo factory.

Simple childrens’ book about competing knisheries on the Lower East Side. A bit of a moral lesson, but not heavy-handed. And knish recipes! Yay!

We love this book! I have an almost 4 year old and a just turned 8 year old girl and they both LOVE this book! Never too many knishes! The story is wonderful and they ask to read it every night! Fantastic for the whole family!
