Editorial Reviews

Review

"Wisdom's story makes my heart soar." Kirby Larson, author of Two Bobbies: A True Story of Hurricane Katrina, Friendship and Survival and Winner of the Newbery Honor for Hattie Big Sky.

"On December 10, 1956, early in my first visit to Midway, I banded 99 incubating Laysan Albatrosses in the 'downtown' area of Sand Island, Midway. Wisdom (band number 587-51945) is still alive, healthy, and incubating again in December 2011. While I have grown old and gray and get around only with the use of a cane, Wisdom still looks and acts just the same as on the day I banded her. . . remarkable true story. . . beautifully illustrated in color." Chandler S. Robbins, Sc.D, Senior Scientist (Retired), USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, MD.

"If the animal is truly wild then how do you extrapolate its life without relying on fantasy and conjecture?
Wisdom: The Midway Albatross offers at least one solution to that question. Add history to facts to the glorious innovation of banding wild animals and you have yourself a bird bio that's easy to distinguish from the flock." --Elizabeth Bird, SLJ's Fuse#8 Blog

I bought this book after reading an article about the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway (June 2012), which eventually led me to some articles about Wisdom the Laysan Albatross. I also recall reading about Wisdom at the time of the 2011 Tsunami. Anyway, after searching for some additional material on the subject I ran across the subject book by Darcy Pattison and Kitty Harvill and purchased it via Amazon, thinking it would be a great story for my new grandson. It is full of great illustrations and a nice story to share with children. Having read it myself though, I intend to pick up another copy to keep around the house! Good work!

I just love this book - it is the true story of an amazing bird and I finished it with tears in my eyes, in love with Wisdom and rooting for her. What a fantastic and unique bird she is, surviving against all odds! With sensitivity and suspense, the author captured the bird's plight of depending on the ocean to live and all the challenges albatrosses have to face in this dangerous environment. The illustrations are beautiful and delicate watercolors, and the text is very engaging. I highly recommend this book. It will pull at your heartstrings whether you are a child or an adult.

YouTube lead me to this book and I'm glad I followed through. Fine illustrations, informative and amazing to read about these amazing birds. Especially the bird called Wisdom. Great for lap reads and for teachers. Take a look at the videos of Wisdom.

I’m so glad to see the story of Wisdom presented in a format all readers can enjoy. Against overwhelming odds, Wisdom has survived and produced chicks that will carry her incredible genes. Young people, just like Wisdom’s chicks, are the hope of our beleaguered planet and I think everyone who reads this wonderful book will be committed to protecting all the creatures on Earth.
This would make a terrific Earth Day gift and I hope all my fellow librarians will add it to their collection!

A TRUE story about the world's oldest known albatross! Wisdom, an albatross who lives on Midway Atoll way out in the Pacific Ocean, was first tagged by a research scientist in 1956! People have been following Wisdom's life since that time. Surviving against all odds Wisdom was tagged again in 2002. This was when she was given the name Wisdom. What was her original name?

This book takes the reader up to 2011 and is extremely well written and illustrated. Being true it adds something special PLUS if you want to read the latest on Wisdom you can google her. As of date of writing this review, Wisdom is now 66 years old and has just recently hatched out another chick! INCREDIBLE! Highly recommend this book for youngsters. Definite keeper in this house!

Although just about readable on my Paperwhite Kindle it is MUCH better read on the CLOUD on a bigger screen and in color or even better still as the REAL book! I purchased this book at the full prevailing price. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

Great book to teach children that humans aren’t the only animals on the planet that live long enough to accumulate vast wisdom and experience. Communicates the awe in contemplating how Wisdom actually survived for so long, what she has experienced and knows.
Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2013
Though some youngsters may know there is such a thing as a gooney bird, chances are they have no idea what one looks like. Until they are old enough to read THE RHYME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER, few will know what an albatross is. Darcy Pattison's biography of a remarkable albatross named Wisdom brings the two words together in a smooth tale enhanced by fascinating artwork that covers the pages. It is never too bold as it helps the reader understand the life that Wisdom lived as a long-time survivor. The text is not difficult for young readers or watered down for those who like picture books for more mature students.

"Facts about Wisdom" and a "Typical Year for a Laysan Albatross" will delight teachers who use this book to capture the attention of their students in science classes.
