Purchase options and add-ons
During the coziness of sweater weather in the mountains of Virginia two people find love against all odds in USA Today bestselling author Nancy Naigle's And Then There Was You.
Reeling after falling prey to a Romeo con-artist who just waltzed away with the better part of her belongings, Natalie Maynard works closely with the detective assigned to her case, only the few leads have led nowhere.
Detective Randy Fellowes can’t promise Natalie restitution, but he’s determined to find the culprit and serve up justice. Married to his work, he’s caught off guard when Natalie has his thoughts wandering to more than the case.
Natalie soon seeks refuge in the one thing she still owns ― an old fishing cabin in the mountains of Chestnut Ridge. She quickly falls in love with the town and the eccentric people who are teaching her so much about the area and its heritage.
Through these people, and the determination of Detective Fellowes, she rediscovers her courage, self, and a reason to risk love again.

When the police come to evaluate, they quickly realize that she has been conned by a pro who insinuated himself in her life and took her for everything she had. She thought she had purchased the house in cash, and it turns out it was just a rental and all the paperwork had been faked. In fact, her life had been faked by the guy she was seeing - the first guy she'd been willing to see after her husband died a couple years earlier. The detective on the case, Randy, does a deep investigation, but as everything about this guy was a con, it is really tough to track him down.
Now, alone and without resources, Natalie begins to realize that she will need to start her life anew, remembering a cabin in the mountains that her husband had owned outright, and about which her new boyfriend had not known. In the time working on the case, Randy had gotten close to her, and he is sad to see her leave, asking her out before she takes off, though she is not yet ready. Luckily, she is only 2 hours away, and they stay in touch for the case and for growing personal reasons.
In the small town with the cabin, Natalie learns about the community there that was so close they all knew her husband and about her. She begins to make a new life for herself, determining what her path will be.
This was a really heartfelt women's fiction read. While there was a very light amount of romance, it certainly felt very background to Natalie's arc of betrayal, desperation, and through to healing. The small town ended up being the perfect location to connect with new people and grow new roots, and I loved the way it all came together, like a Hallmark or Lifetime movie. There were so many characters to love and appreciate as they became a part of Natalie's journey.
It can be tough for victims of a con artist to recover, and Natalie's path to healing is not an easy one. She has some choices to make about how she wants to live her life and the power she will give to this tragedy, which followed on the heels of the tragic loss of her love and husband. She really must build trust in herself before she can see trust in others, and the book gives her a lot of time and space to do this work and healing. It was a soft but powerful read in this way.
I was definitely expecting a bit more romantic elements from the synopsis, and I did not feel a pull towards the couple. This really felt more like an internal character journey rather than any kind of romance. I think the book could have done without it entirely as well, and it would have been nearly the same, as the couple felt a bit flat. That being said, the primary story still caught my interest, and I enjoyed it regardless.
Overall, AND THEN THERE WAS YOU is a compelling women's fiction read about healing and starting anew. Recommend for fans of uplifting and hopeful small town stories. Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.
When she arrives home, a few days after her boyfriend’s early departure for work, she discovers her home, which she paid half for, entirely emptied out; every single piece of furniture, clothing item, and all of her documents. Even the nail holes have been covered and all of the artwork gone. She then learns that her house was rented, not purchased, and her boyfriend has absconded with the money and has vanished.
Detective Randy Fellows is assigned to Natalie’s case. He’s earnest, hard-working and promises to get justice for Natalie and keep her updated along the way. Over time, he also develops feelings for Natalie and slowly, hesitantly a relationship between the two builds. Meanwhile, Natalie escapes to a rugged, remote mountain where her deceased husband owned a hunting cabin and decides to live there while she gets her life back in order. An odd choice, since she was able to live with her best friends, but she needed a change of scenery. She befriends various townspeople, finds some work and unravels some other surprises along the way.
I have loved Nancy Naigle’s previous books, but sadly, this one just missed the mark for me. It started off with my interest peaked, but soon got bogged down in an over-abundance of details that seemed irrelevant. Some elements felt rather far-fetched and unbelievable, and it rubbed me the wrong way how many times the female character referred to counting calories and watching her weight and a man taking care of her. I was bothered that despite the Christian point of view, she went on vacation with her boyfriend and moved on so quickly after her husband’s death. I suppose it could be innocent, and there could be reasons but they weren’t given and it rubbed me the wrong way. Finally, the plot felt predictable and fell flat for me.
I know that I’m in the minority, and that I will definitely return to Ms. Naigle’s future books. Others of hers have been favorites for me, but this one was, unfortunately, a letdown.
