Walt Whitman was born on May 31, 1819, near Huntington, Long Island, New York. On July 4, 1855, the first edition of Leaves of Grass, the volume of poems that for the next four decades would become his lifes work, was placed on sale. Although some critics treated the volume as a joke and others were outraged by its unprecedented mixture of mysticism and earthiness, the book attracted the attention of some of the finest literary intelligences. His poetry slowly achieved a wide readership in America and in England, where he was praised by Swinburne and Tennyson. (D. H. Lawrence later referred to Whitman as the"greatest modern poet, and"the greatest of Americans. Whitman suffered a stroke in 1873 and was forced to retire to Camden, New Jersey, where he would spend the last twenty years of his life. There he continued to write poetry, and in 1881 the seventh edition of Leaves of Grass was published to generally favorable reviews. However, the book was soon banned in Boston on the grounds that it was obscene literature. In January 1892 the final edition of Leaves of Grass appeared on sale, and Whitman's life work was complete. He died two months later on the evening of March 26, 1892, and was buried four days afterward at Harleigh Cemetery in Camden.

Excellent book for teachers or anyone that wants an easy to read beautifully illustrated synopsis of a poets life. I just wish there were more poets available. The poets available are excellent examples, from Walt to Maya Anjelo is a good start. These make great sources for teachers who want a weeks worth of material and background info.Would also be good gifts for a parent who wants to introduce the art of words to a child.

This poetry book for students is great. I bought it to study with my 4th grade class and there is some difficult poems in there. It really takes the students time to study these poems for their meanings. We love the challenge.

I was a bit dissapointed with this book - it says Poetry for Young People, but how old are these young poeple? 16-22?

I bought the book by William Blake and that one is excellent! But of the Whitman poems, they are a very tough read, and only 1 poem in here rhymes.

That one poem is Oh Captain My Captain, and that is a great poem! The rest though, is tough reading. Here's some lines from a Whitman train poem:

'Thee in the driving storm even as now, the snow, the winter-day declining,
Thee in thy panoply, thy measur'd dual throbbing and thy beat convulsive,
Thy black cylindric body, golden brass and silvery steel,
Thy ponderous side-bars, parallel and connecting rods, gyrating, shuttling at thy sides,'

The book itself is a very nice product, with good pictures and details of his life, and short descriptions of the poems.

I want may son to memorize a few poems, and 'Oh Captain My Captain' fits the bill perfectly. However you can get all these poems off the internet, and I personally didn't enjoy any other of Whitman's poems (I Hear America Singing is ok). I'm looking more for poems like the Snowy Woods poem by Frost or 'Casey at the Bat', 'The Tyger',etc, that 9 year olds can really get into.

If this book was entitled 'A Beginners Guide to Whitman', that would be more accurate and I wouldn't have been so dissapointed. But if you want something for younger kids, get the excellent William Blake, and maybe try one of the many other books in the series.
