Editorial Reviews

Review

On an October evening in 1847, Maria Mitchell identified a comet in the heavens. Two days later, a Vatican astronomer saw it, too, but the world’s scientific community rightfully agreed to credit Maria with the discovery, naming the object Miss Mitchell’s Comet. Barrett begins with Maria’s Nantucket childhood, where Sudyka’s gorgeous gouache-and-watercolor starscapes already bleed through the fabric of her reality, shimmering in the ocean waters and along the hems of her dresses. The art often utilizes visual metaphor; dialogue flows across the page in swirling ribbons of text as Maria’s father teaches her how to “sweep the sky.” The language is simple and lyrical, preferring to evoke the wonder of the subject rather than get bogged down in scientific detail, and yet it manages to infuse a healthy dose of education, describing instruments and methods, as well as celestial objects. Back matter further details Mitchell’s distinguished career, and an author’s note gives an inspiring call to action. A beautiful biography about one watchful woman being seen by the world. -- Booklist ― June 1, 2019

What a lovely, well researched book. It is apparent that Hayley Barrett captured the spirit of a fascinating Maria. We are huge fans of Maria Mitchell, and have spent a lot of time with the folks at her museum. It was a pleasure to read a book that will capture the imaginations of budding young solar explores. The art work is wonderful as well as the writing. It will be my go to book for gifts for my nieces.

This is a treasure of a picture book biography, gorgeously written and illustrated, with language that stays true to its remarkable subject and time period in which she lived, using literary and graphic metaphors of the whaling history of the island of Nantucket where Maria Mitchell lived. This book filled me with joy and will be enjoyed by anyone who looks up at the stars with wonder.

This book is one that I bought to showcase women in STEM throughout history. It does a good job at incorporating lots of historical details that can be used to add fun projects to lessons about New England or the development of astronomy. However, as a stand-alone story it’s not terribly interesting or written in a way that captures the attention of children, although the illustrations are beautiful. I would recommend it as a way to add content to your homeschooling curriculum, but not necessarily as a bedtime story kids will ask for over and over again.

5 Stars for a marvelous story and illustration of
an authentic hero from Nantucket who was certainly a star and pioneer. I am buying one for my home and one or two to give to youngsters. References at the end PROVIDE more information about Ms. Mitchell and Quaker heritage plus her accomplishments.
