Review
Cathy Gohlke--Christy Award-winning author of Saving Amelie and Band of Sisters
"You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll sing with the Mavens as they continue on their journey of faith and friendship. These characters are so real, I feel like they have become dear friends to me, and I hated to turn the last page of their story. Terri Gillespie is a gifted writer who knows how to pull on your heartstrings. Women of all ages and backgrounds will be touched and encouraged by this wonderful story!"

- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2017Capturing the same lighthearted tone of fun laced with caring, commitment, and prayer, as ‘She Does Good Hair’, author Terri Gillespie’s second novel in The Hair Mavens saga was worth the wait! That each woman deal is dealing with her personal stuff while enjoying the remodeled and now beautiful salon opening was a long-awaited treat.
However, this seemingly lighthearted read was much more than a contemporary Christian romance because within its pages’ real life issues where dealt with as only those who knows Yeshua (Jesus) could do.
Although, Shira is still the owner and moving force of all that goes on at The Hair Mavens Salon, it was Katya’s story that captured my attention for becoming a hairstylist in 1967, I had several women clients who were either being abused. Calling around, I never found any place that could help them, and not yet having given my life to Messiah, I struggled with the awareness that each time I spoke with any of these precious women my heart broke. I did have success in getting one women into counseling who left her husband about the same time I left the industry to upset to continue. Years later, with Messiah in my heart I returned and began doing what my manager called, "Church in the Chair"! I share this because only in Messiah, and through prayer can we see, understand and discover what He would have us do.
The moment Katya asks if she can pray for them before the salon’s grand opening is one I will never forget because her request was answered in such a way that her heart was drawn to the Lord. To find out what request and how it was answered, you’ll have to read this amazing work of literature – I call it that because within ‘Cut it Out!’ are universal themes that transcend the lighthearted title drawing the reader to the Lord!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2014What a wonderful book! Several characters are experiencing intense personal struggles as well as the interpersonal conflicts that result from those struggles. In one key scene, they all begin the process of healing, of being set free from the chains that held them emotionally and spiritually captive. It all comes about through a crisis that moves them to open their mouths to speak about the secrets of their pasts and to offer words of encouragement and comfort to one another. Terri weaves an amazing tale of freedom and redemption, and of how the power of unity (between Jewish and non-Jewish people, and among spiritual "sisters" who love each other deeply) can transform lives! The ending is very satisfying, but it also leaves me wanting book 3 for some more resolutions. Beautifully done!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2015Another fun read about the Mavens ... love how the author weaves some important information into the story without being preachy. Really looking forward to the third book!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2015After reading Book 1, I just had to know how the Mavens would rebound. I was surprised at the addition of new Mavens. But oh, did they bring a wonderful dimension to the already eclectic group.
I was happy to see the development of Katya/Kathy/Mouse. Finally learning her story and seeing how she begins to move past it was nice, especially when there is clearly more to be told.
I liked the way Ms. Gillespie handled subjects of grief, domestic violence, guilt and forgiveness. And it was wonderful to see how all these things affected their relationships with others and with each other.
I am really looking forward to Book 3 (which I hope is in the works).
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2014I didn't believe it was possible, but book two took my love for the Mavens even deeper! The chemistry between each of the characters and how they merged into a single united front was touching. The addition of the new characters and their dynamics to the original Mavens made such sense. These are women that have trials, tribulations, and insecurities portrayed so perfectly, that I felt like I had experienced their fears and heartaches, as well as the comfort and joys right along with them.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2015This is the second book in a series. The characters are delightful and grow with each chapter. The author adds lots of local color and the occupational details are well done. I'm looking forward to her next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2014Friends help friends, even when it hurts, even when it’s scary. That’s the message of Terri Gillespie’s delightful new book, CUT IT OUT, second in The Hair Mavens series. Gillespie’s return characters shine, revealing more of their past. New characters bring even more to the mix through sharp dialogue and layered stories. Together, they draw domestic violence from the closet, lacing a serious subject with love, wit and even humor. Well done, Ms. Gillespie!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2015Even tho this is fiction, the characters are real well defined people with problems and challenges just like our own next door neighbour's . As all have secrets, things we do not want the world to see. Each of the mainstream characters struggles with a secret or a personality quirk, often negative thoug hts that take over causing much emotional distress. that those without a relationship with God d have a more difficult time
