The Black Belt Blueprint: An Intelligent Approach to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Paperback – February 7, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
Roger Gracie - 10-Times Jiu Jitsu World Champion, Greatest Jiu Jitsu Competitor of all-time
"Nic covers a lot of topics in The Black Belt Blueprint that I've never seen touched on by other BJJ books, and I've read more than a few: how to train smart, the physical aspects of the art, training for the long term journey rather than how to rep out until your body breaks down. He also looks at the mental approach required to get as much out of BJJ as you can - and trust me, that's a lot!
Oliver Geddes - BJJ Black Belt
"The Black Belt Blue Print" is a must have for true students of jiu jitsu. Concise, yet comprehensive, it's the guidebook I secretly yearned for when I began training. With wisdom and experience on every page, this book will enhance your journey in the gentle art."
Roy Dean - BJJ Black Belt
Written by Roger Gracie's first black belt and founder of the Jiu Jitsu Brotherhood, Nicolas Gregoriades, this is a comprehensive guide to the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
It features a detailed and holistic approach to the training methods, techniques and concepts which underpin the art.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2015The Black Belt Blueprint has been one of my most helpful references during this first year of my BJJ training, and I expect it will continue to be as I progress. Nic has a way of distilling complicated complicated material into essential general principles that are easy to understand and apply on the mat. The book provides a structure and framework that is often hard to extract when learning individual skills in class, and I feel fortunate to have found it so early in my training. Starting with basics like breath control, awareness, balance, and position, and moving on to repetition and drilling, conditioning, nutrition, avoiding injuries, and tips on competition, this book has been instrumental in giving me a foundation for my lessons at the academy. There is an excellent reference section at the end of the book that I've used many times as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2015I have been on the mats about 15 months now, and have had this book a little over a week. I wish I had this book when I started training. The concepts Nicolas has shared with us like breathing, angles, posture, etc. as well as his approach before getting on, being on, and being off the mat, has improved my game tremendously in an extremely short amount of time. I have survived more 5 minute rounds with purple and brown belts in the last week, then I have in the last few months. Not only am I surviving, but when the round is over, I am usually still breathing through my nose or back to breathing through my nose shortly after, while the senior guy is smoked. Nothing in this book is worth skipping. The book is 175 pages long, and believe me when I tell you I try to incorporate every word of it into my rolls. His approach, and the way he explains it is absolutely perfect for anyone who enjoys this passion of ours. I highly recommend this book to beginners, as well as the more senior belts. Everyone can learn something from this.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2023Great book for beginners. I haven’t finished the whole thing yet but I have found this book fills the holes of information you don’t always get from class . Really well written and organized . Great if you are just starting or thinking about starting .
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2015I have mixed feelings from this book. In part I was expecting something more, perhaps too much more from it. Much of what it points out can be found in the internet. Almost everything can be either deduced or obtained talking with the black belts in your academy. It points out important issues, like visualization, flux diagrams, relaxation, repetition etc that are commonplace in every sport. Perhaps the most relevant parts are those about breathing, yoga and "when in doubt shrimp".
In short as the author points out: "I feel that the title of this book may have been somewhat misleading". It is in fact misleading. May be the case it should be titled more precisely as 'some general concepts about jiu jitsu training'.
To approach something worthy to be called blueprint it should at least picture a general path through the belts, through the common blocks and plateaus along the path to blackbelt, at least in my opinion.
In any case I would rather suggest reading "Zen jiu jitsu " that is more practical and objective oriented.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2016I'm a 36 year old brown belt. I've been training in jiujitsu for close to 9 and a half years. I just purchased the black belt blue print book and I must say I'm enjoying every little bit of it. I currently find myself in one of the many plateaus I've hit during my training and this book is openning my eyes to new details and ways of approaching my training. This is deffenitly a book I will be referring to again and again for the rest of my life and hope to pass down to my children. This book in my opinion is among the top three must haves for any practitioner of the art. Blackbelt Blue Print, Saulo Ribiero Jiujitsu University, and Paulo Guillobel 21 Immutable Principles of Bjj. I enjoy profrddor nic's work and YouTube tutorials and consider him as one of the most valuable resources in bjj.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2018Pretty general and some of the links are dead. Good intro for some one with no background.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a fantastic book!!
This is a fantastic book for BJJ. Nick’s approach to understanding it really clear and easy to understand. I can only speak from the perspective of a beginner, but even after only the first couple chapters, I found myself applying his suggestions in my drilling and rolling. This will be a go-to manual for my BJJ in the future, of that I am certain. I bought the kindle version, but will likely go back and buy the hard copy as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars De un neófito del BJJ
In English!!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best book's written on the subject of learning Brazilian Jui-jitsu!....
Most book's on Bjj just go through the motion's, telling us what common sense would tell us as we're learning anyway. Nic's book is different. I have purchased a few product's from the Jui-jitsu Brotherhood, but other than that i have no offiliation with them or Nic. So my review is completely unbiased. This is clearly a thought out book and took a long time to write. What i think is genius is Nic's ability to write down the Tool's, Lesson's and point's of view that 'He himself' has learned and used to get to where he is, And this is obvious to me in his writing. So instead of a 'How To' book, Or a Thought out guide of principles and observation's that are written not of there own experience, but rather a bunch of afterthought's. I find Nic's personal insite into his own journey and how his lessons learned, may help anyone else in the process of going through a Bjj System, Refreshing and a must read for 'Anyone' considering, or in the process of there Jui-jitsu Journey. Even as a Purple Belt i keep finding in the book new way's to improve and add to what is essentially mine. Recommended would be under selling this book. 'Must read!' for 'Any' serious Grappler. 10/10....
