Everything within the pages of "The Mafia, CIA and George Bush" is current today. What is here was current on September 11th, 2001.
That said, it is tragic that Mr. Brewton has not returned to journalism in any capacity. Yes, he survived where Gary Webb did not, and we can feel good about that, but Pete Brewton is still dead in a way that is very important.
Mr. Brewton should have been hired by the New York Times after this book was published, instead that publication refused to review the book. The New Yorker did not hire him to write for "the magazine" either.
In an interview in 1992, Mr. Brewton said he wanted to write another book. He did, but it's a novel, and clearly not the same, nor is that what he meant in 1992. After 9-11-2001 we need Mr. Brewton to dig in and tie the pieces together.
Get a copy of this book while you can. It is not an easy read, but it will be the most rewarding read of your life.

I was introduced to the concepts of "other peoples money" and "creative bankruptcy" by these very players, years before these terms were part of the popular vernacular. I was a first hand witness to these intentional crimes and am very knowledgable of the processes involved. So endemic was this condition in Houston that it was near impossible to avoid contact with these dirty players. The "S & L Robbery" was the model for the Enron, Dot Com and 2008 Banking TARP frauds that were to follow. I have bought a second copy from Amazon to share with those who are recently awakened to this criminal syndicate presuming to rule the entire world.
I would state under oath that "As to all of the persons and events in this book that I have PERSONAL FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE, I verify that every statement presented in this book is 100% correct and well documented".
This reader can't help but notice some parallels with the TARP program. The taxpayers pay for a bailout and the money is seldom traced. Somebody makes out really well. On page 380 there is an observation that could have been written in the Fall of 2008-"the taxpayers are now bailing out the savings and loans that were bailing out big banks and insurance companies."
This book is a "Pandora's Box" with connections running through bankers, politicians, power-brokers, CIA assets, and the Mafia.
A lot of the characters are from Texas, but the financial crimes covered the globe with offshore accounts and foreign governments involved. The Iran-Contra affair was but one activity that had links to the S&L institutions that are the subject of this book.
As the title suggests, Mr. Brewton did examine the elder George Bush's connections to people involved in the activities at the financial institutions. There is actually more material dealing with sons Neil, Jeb, and George W. than with the Bush patriarch himself. Some Bush- Saudi connections were exposed and these resurfaced later.
This book turned up some interesting connections between Carlos Marcello and figures in Texas.
Among other subjects, the CIA's aviation assets were investigated regarding drug smuggling and gun running.
Pete Brewton did a thorough job on a complex conspiracy with a large cast of characters, most of them villains on some level.
While dated, this book puts the Savings and Loans scandal in a much brighter light.
the one person who is most responsible for the direction of this country following the
JFK assassination up until today.
Good dogged investigative work by Pete Brewton.
And with what is read add steroids to the corruption revealed in this book and then maybe,
just maybe you have %10 of what George H.W. Bush and the rest of his crooked buddies have
done to destroy the financial health of this once great country.
Pete provides the spider web of corruption.
