Stranded in a Galactic RebellionAs the Terran Commonwealth expanded the borders of the interstellar territories it controlled, a waning alien race was forced to yield much of their once glorious star empire. But they had never been fully conquered, and they would never cease trying to undermine the Commonwealth’s power. When Commonweath diplomats and the command officers of the Terran Fifth Foreign Legion gathered in the alien capital city to meet with a local ruler, no one suspected the trap they were walking into. As assassins attacked the diplomatic party, native forces struck the fortress of the Fifth Foreign Legion, which was still under construction and not yet secure. The ranking surviving officer from the fort has to lead his troops on an impossible march through the heart of enemy territory, fighting every step of the way in a last-ditch effort to reach the main base … or die in the attempt.

One of the best future space military books. It brings you to a personal level with the characters. You find yourself trying

to plan strategies and actions for the unit to survive. This was my first ebook and I am already for book 2 in this series. Keith writes under many names, but this is one of his best!!

This is a book about a Foreign Legion very similar to the French Foreign Legion of today in a future Universe far far away. As far as characters and plots go it's pretty much a French Foreign Legion book. This one has an annoyance to it that I'm not sure what the auther was thinking but there is a pronoun that he has created to describe the aliens that are attacking the legion company. I suppose the author thought this was clever but to me it just interrupted the flow of the book and made it harder to read. I also noticed several cases where there are misspelled words which is moderately annoying but tolerable I guess, and a few places where it looked like there was a missing word or the wrong word was used. So I give it an a-minus for editing.

If you like Foreign Legion novels set in the future, this is probably going to be something you'll like. As military science fiction goes though it's pretty standard stuff nothing really special.

I purchased this book off the Baen website. It is the first book in a three book set. It appears to me that it's a reissue of something that was written some time ago. I suppose there's only three books in the series because it didn't sell all that well so it wasn't worth writing any more books in the series.

A good read with interesting characters and overall a good read.

The existing 5-star ratings and short review significantly overrate this story. This is a tale of a futuristic Foreign Legion that is stationed on a distant planet. The natives, relatively primitive compared to high-tech legionnaires, decide to revolt. Many of the legionnaires are massacred in the initial onslaught, many others are surrounded and cut off. The legionnaires have a huge advantage in firepower and discipline, but there are hordes of natives with relatively low-tech, but nonetheless lethal, weapons and it is an all out fight to the finish. This tale follows one company of the legionnaires as they initially defend their camp, then decide to make a perilous march back to the friendly lines. On the way they fight several battles with the natives, pick up some other legionnaires, ultimately to be trapped in a narrow valley just before reaching their destination. If you want to see if they make it out, read the book.

There is a lot to like about this book, and it is written better than most military sci-fi that I've read. The world and the natives are well thought out and complex. The author obviously knows a great deal about the history and traditions of the real French Foreign Legion, these are woven into the story. Much of the military hardware used by the future soldiers is well thought out and at least believable. The underlying theme of the story (do the main characters have what it takes to be a legionnaire, are they capable, etc.) is pretty simplistic though. The plot is fairly predictable and you can pretty much guess how it is going to end. Definitely worth a look if you like this genre, but not 5 stars worth (no way this is like Starship Troopers - not on the same planet).

Interesting setting with reliably solid story. Well led troops vs. poorly led troops which obviated their numerical strength. Well laid out story with a solid teaser for next volume in the series.

French Foreign Legion on an alien world. An officer learns to be a leader and a renegade new trooper learns to be a good soldier. Evil plotting aliens and plenty of action scenes. Somewhat predictable, but a nice cozy book to sit down with and be entertained.

Interesting notes: this book really seems to pay homage to the earlier "Uller Uprising" by H. Beam Piper as far as worldbuilding goes, it is a quick read and if you enjoyed this book you should give it try (it's really CHEAP, too!).

My definition of Good is different from theirs.

"This Book is in Good Condition. Clean Copy With Light Amount of Wear."

So wrong: spine broken, cover scratched, heavy wear.
