Editorial Reviews
Review
Hudson's winter landscapes invite the viewer right in with their rich brown branches and evergreens against pale pillowy snow drifts, and kids will be eager to join in with Tortoise's grumpy refrain every time one of his friends asks him why tortoises don't like winter: "They just don't." Bold sound- effect lettering heightens both Tortoise's annoyance at his friends' activities and his own delight when he discovers the pleasures of winter. Tortoise is adorably cranky in his resistance to winter activities, and his friends are encouraging without being pushy. --"Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books"

About the author
Katy was raised in Middlesbrough and started her Illustration career as a small child drawing on freshly emulsioned walls around the house! Her parents quickly dissuaded this medium and encouraged drawing with pencil and paper instead.
The idea stuck (the pencil was updated to an ink pot and pen in some cases) and after some lovely time at Art College and a degree in Illustration Katy is now a freelance Illustrator working at a desk in an old London library.

Even before the text part of the story begins, we get a sense of the visual charm of the book with the opening few pages offering up a collage-like collection of items and smaller texts: a teddy bear, a carrot from rabbit (“in case you get puckish”), a calendar with most of the days in November marked off as “Sleep,” a packet of chamomile tea, and a Tortoise Hibernation guide, “Containing Practical Tips for Cozy Bed Making.” The text opens with “Tortoise had just snuggled in for his long winter nap when . . . “ and soon we see poor sleepy Tortoise suffer through a series of interruptions: Robin is having a singing class, Rabbit is making ice sculptures of the woodland animals (including one of Tortoise), Squirrel is having a snowball fight, and Beaver is making sleds. Each time he is asked to join in an activity, he replies “Tortoises don’t like winter.” When questioned as to why, his response is simply, “They just don’t.”
After his resting tree (he uses a ladder to climb it) is knocked down, he finally find what he thinks is a nice flat piece of wood to make his bed on, but it turns out to be one of Beaver’s sleds and soon Tortoise is flying down the hill and then onto the frozen pond. To his surprise, it was all quite fun, and so “Tortoise skated, slid, and spun with friends late into the night.”
The repetitive nature of the text makes for a good read-aloud book, or even an early read-to-myself one as young children (pre-readers and early readers) can anticipate Tortoise’s responses. I would have liked more of a sense textually of what Tortoise finds so unlikable about winter, and the shift at the end is a little abrupt; I wish we had spent more time textually and visually with this new winter-enjoying Tortoise, but it will be a nice little twist for young readers.
The text is mostly serviceable, simple and clear throughout. The illustrations though greatly enhance the charm of the story, especially in their small details such as little signs and the like. Children will easily follow the text, enjoy its respective nature, but will I think really engage with the pictures. A nice little winter story that could actually have gone a little longer.

The author is Katy Hudson, and she writes really good books.
This book is a story about a tortoise, and we buy a small plush tortoise to go with the book.
The kids love them.
