“Block grabs you with the first story and never lets go” in this indispensable collection packed with unforgettable characters and crimes (Elmore Leonard).

Enough Rope, a collection of superb stories, establishes the extraordinary skill, power, and versatility of contemporary Grand Master Lawrence Block. Block’s beloved series characters are on hand, including ex-cop Matt Scudder, bookselling burglar Bernie Rhodenbarr, and the disarming duo of Chip Harrison and Leo Haig. Here, too, are Keller, the wistful hit man, and the natty attorney Martin Ehrengraf. Keeping them company are dozens of other refugees from Block’s dazzling imagination, all caught up in more ingenious plots than you can shake a blunt instrument at. Half a dozen of Block’s stories have been short-listed for the Edgar Award, and three have won it outright. All the tales in Block’s three previous collections are here, along with two dozen new stories. Some will keep you on the edge of the chair. Others will make you roll on the floor laughing. Enough Rope is an essential volume for Lawrence Block fans, and a dazzling introduction for others to the wonderful world of Block magic!

“With early tales (1957’s ‘You Can’t Lose’) and recent ones (‘Terrible Tommy Terhune’) . . . this compendium of sharply written short fiction will delight Blocks many fans, and likely earn him new ones.” —Publishers Weekly

“The plain unpleasant truth is that nobody working in crime fiction today has written so many good books, of so many different types, with so many great characters.” —January Magazine

“True-blue mystery fans would be crazy to pass it up.” —Kirkus Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This hefty collection of acclaimed mystery master Lawrence Block's short fiction is packed with delights for fans of his many popular series as well as first-time readers who haven't yet met the engrossing protagonists who people them, including Keller, the thoughtful hit man; private eye Matt Scudder; burglar and bookstore owner Bernie Rhodenbarr; and Martin Ehrengraf, the well-dressed lawyer who takes criminal cases on a contingency basis and has his own devious methods for making sure his clients are always acquitted. But it's the non-series stories that are the standouts here, particularly "Cleveland in My Dreams," in which a psychiatrist comes up with a novel way to rid a patient of a relentless nightmare, and the patient passes on the "cure" to an unsuspecting friend; "Collecting Ackermans" and "Death Wish," two standouts about jealousy and its discontents; and a handful of other little gems with central characters who may not merit their own series because they're just not very likable, but show off Block's ability to keep the reader guessing until the last sentence. It may be hard to pick up--if only because it runs nearly a thousand pages--but this wry, witty, well-wrought collection is even harder to put down. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly

A month before the mass market edition of his bestseller Hope to Die hits shelves, whodunit Grand Master Lawrence Block will come out with Enough Rope"in Blocks words, a huge doorstop of a thing "a collection of 83 stories spanning a career that began nearly five decades ago. With early tales (1957s You Cant Lose ) and recent ones (Terrible Tommy Terhune ), not to mention plenty featuring series heroes Martin Ehrengraf, Matthew Scudder and Keller, this compendium of sharply written short fiction will delight Blocks many fans, and likely earn him new ones.

I'm not good at reading nonstop, and in long novels, I often have difficulty keeping up with the characters. This book was a perfect match to my reading style; short but punchy stories, interesting characters, and sometimes surprising endings.

About two hundred short stories in this collection and not a klunker in the bunch. I have been a big fan of the novels, especially Matthew Scudder and Bernie Rhodenbarr, for years, and never really latched on to any of the short forms of Block’s work. Until now.
Thanks o Enough Rope, I have a new found appreciation for his genius. Quite simply, this collection is more evidence of the profound blessing that Lawrence Block lives and has taken up storytelling as his profession.

From the start Block tells stories that entertain, are mind twisters or just plain blow you away. Many of these short stories have a twist in the final line or paragraph that make you ask, "How did I miss that ?" or "Why didn't I see that comming ?"
Very entertaining and just right for eposodic reading when you have short times to read when waiting for your daily appointments or meetings.
I am enjoying these stories thoroughly.

That works out to 225 pages for a dollar and all of them penned by Lawrence Block ! If the price is not right then the stories are just right. A sampler of Block's writings all the way from 1957 to more recent works, it not only has Matt Scudder stories but also the Keller the hit man,Bernie Rhodenbarr the burglar and Martin Ehrengraf, the well-dressed lawyer.

All 83-that's not a typo- stories are concise, well plotted and smooth sailing enough to make it good reading material while you are waiting on line or wanting to read a complete story in a short period of time. For the novice, this collection is a good primer of many of Block's characters. For the more seasoned Block fan,it is yet another unforgettable experience.

Very entertaining collection of stories. The author has come up with some creative and interesting characters.

Each story is unpredictable and I really appreciate the fact that he came up with original ideas and story lines.

These are mostly “crime/mystery” stories but I think anyone will find them to be worthwhile and entertaining even if this isn’t their preferred genre.

I absolutely have loved Lawrence Block's writing from day one when I first got introduced to
Chip Harrison 35-plus years ago.
Now, while 'incarcerated' during the coronavirus chaos, I am absolutely loving, loving, loving
'Enough Rope'.
Mr. B has been one of my absolutely most favorite authors for many years, and this collection
of his amazing short stories, although massive, is not enough! Try it. You'll get my drift after
the first couple stories.
I had the honor to meet Mr. Block here in St. Louis many years ago and introduced him to
Jack Carney who had him on his KMOX-Radio program.
Two giants in the same room. Now, that was something!

I am an unabashed fan of Lawrence Block and still have a t-shirt from a visit he made to South Haven. That said, this huge book exceeded expectations. Short stories of many of his featured characters and other unknown tales (to me at least). Whimsical at times, fanciful and delightful. I read 12 stories while flying to Vegas last week. Would read one or two, take a break, come back and read some more.

I had read a couple of these previously, but having them all together was nice. Highly recommend the kindle version, the actually book is 896 pages and you would need a lot of rope to tote it around. But on the kindle, it is as light as string.

I am saving half of the stories to read once the winter snows kick in.

Good short stories, even if they are really depressing. I probably will not read all, as some characters from
Lawrence Block's are just a little too dark and violent. I have recycled the books with characters of Matthew Scudder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Die Essenz des Krimis
Reviewed in Germany on June 8, 2011

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd".

E. die Geschichten "Nothing Short of Highway Robbery" (1977) und vor allem "A Blow for Freedom" (1992).
