The Next Mrs. Blackthorne (Bitter Creek Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 360 ratings

The New York Times bestselling author of The Cowboy and The Rival returns to the Bitter Creek series with this thrilling and passionate novel that reveals who will become Clay Blackthorne’s wife.

A lavish summer wedding is being planned at Bitter Creek ranch. In one month, Clay Blackthorne will wed socialite Jocelyn Montrose. But when she hears stirrings of a corporate takeover by the family’s arch rival, North Grayhawk, Jocelyn covertly heads to North’s ranch to offer a valuable commodity—herself—if North will call off his plans. Striking a deal to spend the summer with the steely, seductive North, Jocelyn fails to see that her sacrifice to protect the man she loves may have dire consequences.

Stunned by his fiancee’s rejection, Clay, a newly appointed federal judge, begins presiding over an incendiary terrorism trial, which brings him face to face with his first love, Libby Grayhawk. As tensions mount, forces beyond Clay’s control threaten the women most precious to him in the past and the present. And only in a daring act of sacrifice will he know which woman will become the next Mrs. Blackthorne.

From Booklist

Jocelyn is engaged to widower Clay Blackthorne, a federal judge in Austin, and savvy enough to know that she is an outsider in the rough-and-tumble feud between two rich and powerful families: the Blackthornes and the Grayhawks. So she decides to help. North Grayhawk is interested in her, so she makes him an offer: herself in his bed if he agrees to give back his shares of the Blackthornes' land. He is a cold man, but he agrees. Clay deduces what she is doing and says he'll wait for her. Meanwhile, his daughter, Kate, devises her own plan. Libby, North's sister, and Clay were once in love, but their families kept them apart. Kate now manages to bring them together as North and Jocelyn fall in love. But Kate has to be put in danger's way before the two feuding families finally settle their differences. With a soap-opera plot and manly men and tempestuous women, Johnston's dramatic tale is dallas, dynasty, and Bonanza all rolled into one. Maria Hatton

Joan Johnston is the top 5 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of 62 contemporary and historical novels and novellas with more than 15 million copies of her books in print. Joan's bestselling Bitter Creek, Hawk's Way, and Benedict Brothers series have enchanted readers during her 35-year writing career.

Joan's adventures traveling the world as an Air Force brat—encountering a cobra on the back porch and letting a baby octopus crawl on her hand in the Philippines, getting her teeth straightened by a Danish dentist in Casablanca, watching a camel get slaughtered at the souk in Marrakech, and learning to ride on an Arabian stallion in Morocco—made her curious about the world and gave her a love of travel. That rich upbringing—as one of seven kids—gave her the material to become the writer she is today

Joan loves to entertain and her creative table settings and menus are featured in her monthly newsletter. Joan also plays tennis and hikes in the mountains around Boulder, Colorado, where she lives.

Joan earned a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, Florida, an M.A. in Theater from the University of Illinois and a J.D. with honors from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin.

Joan has an eclectic background and has worked as a director of theatre, drama critic, newspaper editor, college professor (at Barry University and the University of Miami) and attorney (with Hunton & Williams in Richmond, Virginia, and Squire, Sanders & Dempsey in Miami, Florida) on her way to becoming a full-time writer. She has also raised two pretty great kids.

Her books have been published by Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, and Harlequin. Joan has also self-published a number of contemporary novels and novellas.

This book was really good. I could hardly put it down. I love joan johnston novels. And I have been readin this series from the beginning starting with the sisters if the lone star state. Its a really good series. I love how all her books are connected over time. When I read this book I didnt know that there were some other books before this because when I was reading it I felt like I had missed something..so the order for this series in case anyone was wondering like I was is; the cowboy, the texan, the loner, the price, the rivals, the next mrs. Blackthorne, a stangers game and shattered.

I enjoyed this book very much. There were a few tense moments toward the end of the book but most of the story was about getting Libby and Clay back together after twenty years.

This is one of the best series I've ever read. I hated to see this book end. Hope we find out if North and Joss have a boy or girl.

A truly gifted author. I have read many of Ms Johnston's books, the Creeds and the Blackthornes, famous feuding family's of Texas. I suppose every state has it's fueds. Ours is the Hatfields and the McCoys. This book brought some of the key players on both sides together with a lot of heartache, love and laughter.
