Overall Rating: 3.85 // Action: 3.0 / Emotion: 3.0 / Romance: 3.0 / Sensuous: 1.0 / Suspense: 3.0 // Historical Flavor: 4.0 / Laughter: 1 / Tears: 1Castles In The Air: 3.85Dodd wrote an entertaining and enjoyable story that sweeps the reader back to medieval England. She failed, however, to inspire that deep sense of connection to the characters that is necessary for an outstanding read.Hero: 3.0:Geoffroi Jean Louis Raymond, Count of Avraché: Although Raymond had all the requisite factors that make him typical hero material -- tall, handsome, intelligent, confident, and a background filled with angst, the attributes Dodd featured in this story were his compassionate and kind-hearted nature as he tried to inveigle himself into Juliana's family unit. Just a bit disappointed because was more in the mood for a sword-wielding alpha knight.Heroine: 2.5:Lady Juliana of Lofts: Just could not warm up to this strong-willed, self-sufficient, compassionate heroine because of her inconsistencies. One minute she's issuing orders like a drill sergeant, the next she's cowering like a whipped puppy -- all the way through the book.Story Line: 3.0:The premise for this story was good -- Raymond goes to retrieve Juliana from her home because she refused to heed the king's command to marry him. But rather than force her to marry him, Raymond decides to woo and seduce Juliana into compliance. The biggest problem during the telling of the story, however, was that Dodd spent way too much time trying to inspire a degree of intrigue by referring to Juliana's 'big secret' for way too long.Action: 3.0:There were a few exciting action scenes, but most of the story was comprised of everyday events that moved the story along at a slow, but steady pace.Emotion: 3.0:It was difficult to connect to Raymond and Juliana on an emotional level for a couple of reasons. The first was Juliana's vacillation between strength and fear because she was unable to overcome her insecurities caused by the event that happened three years ago. The second was Raymond's fears of being unworthy because he 'broke' while being held as a captive of the Saracen's.Romance: 3.0:Enjoyed the fact that Dodd slowly built the romance between the two protagonists because Raymond decided to show Juliana that actions spoke louder than words -- that he was a man worthy of trust and love. Raymond aspired to work beside Juliana rather than demand he was lord of the realm.Sensuous: 1.0:Raymond was forced to lay next to Juliana night after night and built her to such a level of lust that she was ravenous for him. And while readers were allowed to see the attraction that built between Raymond and Juliana, Dodd did not share any of the sizzle or spice when it came to the actual lovemaking scene. (Remember the book was written in 1993 -- the days of purple-prose sensuality.)Suspense: 3.0:The story was pervaded by a lazy aura of suspense about {1} the haunting events that occurred in Raymond and Juliana's past and {2} what was Sir Joseph going to stir up next.Secondary Characters: 4.0:Dodd did a great job of including some very interestingly-developed secondary characters who added wonderful depth to the story. {1} Loved Keir, Raymond's friend and confidant. {2} Juliana's daughters, Margery and Ella, were minimally developed but really enhanced the enjoyment of the story. {3} Couldn't help but dislike {a} Sir Joseph, the villain, and {b} Raymond's cold, mercenary parents, Geoffroi and Isabel, the Count and Countess of Locheais. The last two memorable secondary characters that added to the story were: {1} Tosti, a tracker who was working on the building project and {2} Denys, the troubled squire William sent to Raymond to train.Historical Flavor: 4.0:Dodd did an outstanding job of taking the reader back in time with her descriptions of the buildings, including the political climate of the country, describing the attire and including the roles of aristocrats and serfs reminiscent of England in 1166.See Wolf Bear Does Books for a more in-depth, detailed review of *Castles In The Air*.

This book is well written and contains two strong characters. These two slowly begin to trust each other and a love blossoms. Plenty of interesting secondary characters and interesting sub plots. Great Read.

Castles In the Air is a semi-sequel to A Candle in the Window. The hero, Raymond of Avrache, was a friend of William of Miraval. This book follows the romantic journey of Raymond and the wife given him by the king, Juliana of Lofts. Juliana has a lot of mistrust and baggage from bad dealings with the men in her life. I get frustrated with her most of the book but I love Raymond. He is domineering, prideful and a know-it-all but at heart he is a lord and a leader. His experiences as a Saracen slave make him feel less than a man but to the reader he always appears to be a hero. Keir, Valeska and Dagna are three of my favorite supporting characters in a book.

I feel the story follows a logical path and doesn't make things too easy on either main character. I have reread this book several times mainly to reacquaint myself with Raymond and his lady, Juliana, and their ability to overcome their crippling pasts and learn to love and trust one another. Exactly how all of our romances end up, right?

I'd give this a 3.5 if I could. I had read Candle in the Window, so I was glad to read a follow up featuring William's friend Raymond. The plot however seemed to drag on in places, and at one point I had put it down for a few weeks because I had no interest in reading through. There were few instances of the characters from Candle, but they were not really involved in the story so don't read it for that. It was a good book, but wasn't as good as Candle.

After Candle in the Window I thought I'd never find a book I enjoyed so much . Characters that come alive in the page, characters so human with wants and needs like everyone. William and Saura may be first but oh! Juliana and Raymond are so strong (and stubborn) yet insecure find in each other the courage and strength to trust themselves and each other with the greatest gift you can give, love!

I bought this book after reading quite a few reviews on it and although it wasn't quite what I expected (I thought his charade as the "master castle-builder" would have been carried out a bit longer) - it was a pretty good story. There were several scenes that made me laugh and one or two that brought tears to my eyes. It made for a very believeable story and I really liked how well the secondary characters were portrayed. I wouldn't say the story was boring in the least and it would make a good read for many a romance lover.

Love her style of storytelling and the fact that several of her books are in a much earlier period than the popular Regency Period. I especially admire her ability to describe the castles and their surrounds so well that I feel like I am watching the story unfold with me inside the castle. I have already reread this book once and reluctantly passed this on to a friend.

I thought I had all of Christina Dodd's books but I must have missed one or two. Castles in the Air was everything I wanted in a book, it flowed along and was difficult to put down. I always keep her books and re-read them, this is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars Une lecture pleine d'humour et d'émotion
Reviewed in France on February 28, 2006

1.0 out of 5 stars Should have come with a warning

If you want to read a book where the main female character is verbally and physically abused, then this is the book for you. This book was all over the place. Silly dialogue that was boring and made you wonder what was the point, personalities changing from one sentence to the next and overall a very dark boring book. When I read a book, I want adventure, drama, maybe a few bits of humour and a great flow in the story and this book did not deliver. It was dark and depressing, not fun at all. Some of the positive reviews for this book are suspect - there were no big mysteries and plots unless they are referring to the two main character's background which should have been revealed sooner especially for the main female in the story. Otherwise you just read about the abuse she keeps getting which makes no sense at all and was very depressing. That went on way too long. The other characters in the book - the evil uncle and the main male character's parents - were hateful, irritating and totally silly. As for the two female servants, the author hinted at a background story for them, but there was none. I read more than 2/3rds of the book and skipped to the end. Wow, found one sentence of humour. And lastly, the cover of the book. I thought it was very strange - the woman has a spaced out, duh look on her face, it's the worst cover I have ever seen on a romance novel. That should have been my first clue. This book's story description sounds great, like a fun adventure. Don't believe it. It's dark, irritating and a waste of money.
