The Burglar in the Closet (Bernie Rhodenbarr Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 467 ratings

A thief finds himself in the wrong place and suspected of the wrong crime in the “unfailingly entertaining” series from bestselling author (The New York Times).

It’s hard to ignore someone with his hands in your mouth. Bernie Rhodenbarr’s all ears when Dr. Sheldrake, his dentist, starts complaining about his detestable, soon-to-be-ex wife, and happens to mention the valuable diamonds she keeps lying around the apartment. Since Bernie’s been known to supplement his income as a bookstore owner with the not-so-occasional bout of high-rise burglary, a couple of nights later he’s in the Sheldrake apartment with larceny on his mind—and has to duck into a closet when the lady of the house makes an unexpected entrance. Unfortunately he’s still there when an unseen assailant does Mrs. Sheldrake in . . . and then vanishes with the jewels.

Bernie’s got to come out of the closet some time. But when he does, he’ll be facing a rap for a murder he didn’t commit—and for a burglary he certainly attempted—unless he can hunt down the killer who left him hanging.

“Light-hearted crime at its very best.” —Robert Ludlum

“Hilarious.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“A forgery ring turns up—along with the breezy Manhattan repartee and charmingly crude New Yorkers we’ve come to expect from the likably smart-alecky Mr. Block.” —Kirkus Reviews

Secrecy and a deft touch are the hallmarks of every successful burglar. Or so thinks Bernie Rhodenbarr before he gets a shocking proposal from his dentist. Sitting back in the chair, vulnerable thanks to a dental instrument in his mouth, he discovers that Dr. Sheldrake needs a burglar. "Like you, Bernie", the good dentist says. So much for leading a secret life of crime. Bernie, smart guy that he is, turns the dentist down flat. So why is Bernie picking the locks on the posh apartment of Crystal Sheldrake, the dentist's ex-wife? Because he's a burglar. Plus, Crystal has a cache of jewels worth any burglar's time. Trouble is, Crystal comes home early - and she's not alone. Bernie quickly hides in a closet, which Crystal promptly and inconveniently locks. As time goes by, Crystal rids herself of her companion and Bernie manages to pick his way out of the closet -- only to discover Crystal dead on the floor and the jewels gone. Bernie must sleuth his way out of a real mess. The Burglar in the Closet is a terrific read! -- Midwest Book Review

The movie was okay and what a different set of events for the source material. Book set in late 70s movie set in late 80s. Both very interesting.

Bernie Rhodenbarr is a burglar so there is a little bit of the "caper movie" feeling to this series of books. He always finds himself in a tight situation and has to use his wits to solve the crime he has been accused of. What I love the most about this series - and everything else Lawrence Block has written - is the witty, smart writing. The quick and humorous banter between characters is delightful and addictive.

Bernie Rhodenbarr is the Burglar in this wonderful series by Lawrence Block. In this episode, Bernie finds himself trapped in a closet while the owner of said closet is being murdered. Of course, Bernie will be suspect number one, unless he can figure out who the actual murderer really is, while the police are looking for him, not to mention the crooked cop, Ray, who wants half of anything Bernie stole.

Block is a master of dialogue and he ensures Bernie is armed to the teeth with banter, repartee, and inner musings. To say that the Burglar series is witty and amusing is like saying Casablanca was a good movie —- it’s an accurate statement but it doesn’t say enough.

Burglar in the Closet is an absolute gem, one that even Bernie would pilfer if he wasn’t already a part of it.

A rehash of the basic plot of Block's previous Bernie Rhodenbarr book, Burglars Can't Be Choosers. Again, Bernie finds himself burglarizing a residence containing a murdered victim. PU-LEEZ!
And again, he hooks up with a sweet young thing who believes in his innocence and wants to help him.
And again, he's running from the law, hiding out with his cute, cuddly female admirer while he solves the real whodunit. And , of course , they have sex.
The culmination is ridiculously complex and stretches credulity.
The redeeming factor is Bernie's (Block's) light, wry funny prose. In that respect, he is a sort of male Sue Grafton. So the journey is lots of fun, even though, like Sue Grafton, the destination is a disappointment.

Now there aren't many of those, so if you like a light fanciful read about a burglar who never loses his cool while the bodies are piling up - then this is it. I never thought of burglars as likable, but this story paints a picture of a warm hearted burglar who fits into the neighbourhood - in more ways than one could imagine.

Bernie Rhodenbarr is back with another adventure, this time he is doing a favor for his goofy dentist. The dentist (to the elite) has divorced his trampy wife and in the process, lost everything including a fortune in jewels that he gave her throughout the marriage. He suggests Bernie break into the house while the ex-wife is gone, recover the jewels and he will cut Bernie in for a large percentage. The dentist is so annoying that I, personally, would have shot him first! During the robbery, the wife returns and Bernie quickly hides in the closet where he cannot see but only hear what is going on. He finally manages to escape after a murder occurs, without the jewels! Soon he is charged with the murder AND jewel robbery. Will his wits and cunning be enough to save him while eluding the police? The ending has a nice unexpected twist of why. Very enjoyable tale. As usual, Bernie is a hoot!

Bernie Rhodenbarr is back in this second book of Lawrence Block's "Burglar" Mystery Series which is all about a gentleman theif: he breaks into apartments to steal something that he's asked to retrieve, like Robin Hood, but in reverse. In The Burglar in the Closet, Berine is aksed by his dentist to retrieve some jewels for his no good, greedy ex wife. Bernie agrees but then ends up locked in a closet, and witnesses the ex wife being killed. Now he's involved in another murder mystery. I really enjoyed this book as well as I liked the first book

The plot is contrived--very--but then most works in this genre share this characteristic. What raises Burglar above the mean is Bernie, the narrator-protagonist, who is by turns honest and deceptive, predictable and surprising, but all the while interesting. He slips clichés into points in the narration that render them fresh; this capacity no better illustrated than in the scene of final reckoning that brings all players together, a la Christie but, unlike that wirter, Bernie/Lawrence doesn't have all the ends firmly in hand. He garners sympathy while detailing acts and thoughts that would normally put off the reader. And in the end he gets what he deserves: no time in prison, no new woman in his life, but possibilities for the future. Yes, I'd read another in this series.

I've read most of Lawrence Block's Bernie Rhodenbarr series and not one of them has ever failed to put a smile on my face. They all get neatly wrapped up with a nice bow at the end, some with too many bows at the end, but all of them have left me witha feeling of contentment, that all is well with the world for a change. The Burglar in the closet is not an exception to this rule

Loved this book! Bernie is a burglar who gets into some terrible situations but manages to outwit his enemies every time with the aid of a mercenary policeman. Amusing stories with we'll drawn characters. Have read a few in the series.
