Skylight Confessions Kindle Edition
Writing at the height of her powers, Alice Hoffman conjures three generations of a family haunted by love.
Cool, practical, and deliberate, John is dreamy Arlyn's polar opposite. Yet the two are drawn powerfully together even when it is clear they are bound to bring each other grief. Their difficult marriage leads them and their children to a house made of glass in the Connecticut countryside, to the avenues of Manhattan, and to the blue waters of Long Island Sound. Glass breaks, love hurts, and families make their own rules. Ultimately, it falls to their grandson, Will, to solve the emotional puzzle of his family and of his own identity.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2008Once again Alice Hoffman proves why she is such an interesting writer. Although her themes of slightly supernatural characters are her formula for each book she handles them in such different ways. This book is no exception and is welcome departure from some of her previous "witch" themes. Her characters are interesting and fully developed. Most important she makes them so fascinating and poignant that you don't want to stop reading until you get to the end. I liked the closure of this book because of the realistic way her characters bring conclusion to their life's dilemna. I can't say it was a happy ending such as you find in Practical Magic however it was a sensible one that did not leave you feeling cheated by the characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2025I read every word, never skimmed, ever. Usually I do but not this story. The entire book was intriguing and satisfying. Dreamy and gritty, sad and tragic. Much like real life. Very believable. That's what I appreciate in a book and what makes this a great deeply felt story for me. Highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2007I'm accustomed to reading an Alice Hoffman novel and being winded, astonished, and sometimes in tears at the end. Not this time. The story had very Hoffman-esque twists (e.g., the changing pearls) but did not delve deeply enough into the character development.
The story of Arlyn Singer was sad and touching, and somehow frustrating. Arlyn reacts to a tragic event by making a promise to marry the next man she sees. She has passion, and the man she meets lacks that passion. In an Alice Hoffman world, that's a recipe for heartache.
We watch the lives of Arlyn's family (and those who come into it) unfold, and perhaps we secretly hope that they turn out just fine. Unfortunately, we know that they won't.
Though the house where Arlyn and her family lived was called the Glass Slipper, I felt that it was less of an analogy to the old lady who lived in a shoe than to the adage "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones".
I read this book in about 2 hours or so, hoping for that Hoffman experience. While I love Alice Hoffman's writing, "Skylight Confessions" did not pack the punch that some of her earlier novels, notably "Turtle Moon" and "Illumination Night", did so well.
On a final note, I am quite glad I read this before I read the editorial reviews, above. Those reviews revealed way more than I would have wanted to know before reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2024Absolutely haunting... I kept thinking I could make the book go away but I just kept coming back to it. thank goodness for the sanity and humanity of Meredith. Too sad the insanity of Sam.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2024This was such a depressing book. With that I still wanted to know what would happen next. Some points I related to because my brother was a tortured soul with drugs and I loved him with all my heart, maybe that’s why I felt it was so depressing.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2024I was hooked from the very beginning! I loved it! Alice Hoffman never disappoints! I am looking forward to reading another book written by her!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2023Sad book about a family who weren't able to tell each other how they felt or understand each other. So much love and happiness lost because of this. I really felt a connection with each of the major characters and until the end was hoping for a solution to their dysfunction. Very well written novel.
