When a murder victim is discovered in a Pennsylvania field, a detective and archaeologist must team up to keep a mysterious killer from carrying out a horrifying plan to fill empty graves.
COME TO ME
The first victim is found in a snow-covered Philadelphia field. Detective Vito Ciccotelli enlists the aid of archaeologist Sophie Johannsen to determine exactly what lies beneath the frozen ground. Despite years of unearthing things long buried, nothing can prepare Sophie for the matrix of graves dug with chilling precision. The victims buried there haunt her. But the empty graves terrify her-the killer isn't done yet.

SCREAM FOR ME
He is cold and calculating, the master of a twisted game. Even with Vito and Sophie hot on his trail, he will not stop. One more empty grave must be filled, and one last scream must be heard-the scream of an archaeologist who is too close for comfort and too near to resist . . .

Review

"Tavia Gilbert's well-paced narration of Karen Rose's latest suspense keeps things hopping...the love scenes fairly sizzle. Rose is a master of the romantic mystery, and listeners won't be disappointed."

-- "AudioFile"

"Karen Rose writes hold-your-breath suspense."

-- "Karen Robards"

"No one does twisted killers better than the awe-inspiring Rose. Her ability to ratchet up the creepy factor within an exciting procedural thriller makes her tops in her field. The real trick, however, is balancing out a great villain with strong heroes and heroines, which is exactly the case in this fear-inducing novel."

-- "Romantic Times"

Die For Me

Die For Me
Die For Me by Karen Rose Romantic suspense. #7 in the order of all the author books. Can be read as a stand-alone. A body is found in a Philadelphia field and Detective Vito Ciccotelli calls in archaeologist Sophie Johannasen to help investigate. They find multiple bodies and the work starts to identify the victims and track down the killer. The empty spots are chilling because you know they are planned. Intense and gripping. Lots of bodies. Horrifying, torturous kills. And a psycho killer.

It's winter in Philadelphia and a body has been found in a shallow grave in a frozen, fallow field. The body has been posed, the victim heinously tortured, and homicide detectives Vito Ciccotelli and Nick Lawrence soon realize they have a monster on their hands. The ME knows an archaeologist who may be able to help search the rest of the field after evidence points to more bodies. Dr. Sophie Johannsen doesn't look like Vito expected when he went to pick her and her ground penetrating radar (GPR) equipment up from the college. The attraction between them is instantaneous but horribly ill timed on both ends, and the case Vito's just landed is getting grislier by the minute.

As the death toll grows and more and more bodies are discovered, it's Sophie's expertise in medieval weaponry that puts her in the cross hairs of a cold, conscienceless killer. Vito is determined to keep her safe, but someone out there is even more determined to hear her scream...and scream...and scream before the light of life is extinguished from her eyes forever.

Karen Rose is the very best sort of author. Not only does she write exceptionally well, but she tells a hell of a story while doing so. I haven't been reading her books for long, but I'm quickly working through them now that I'm aware of them. Her unique blend of police procedural, suspense, and romance sets her apart in the genre and catapults her to the top of my list of "must read" authors. Each book is a study in intricate plotting and remarkable balance, led by strong and well developed characters leading ordinary but easy to relate to lives until one horror or another trips them up and pushes them into the realm of the extraordinary.

Die for Me is the best one I've read by Rose to date. In fact it's currently at the top of my list of all the romantic suspense I've read, regardless of author. The plot is a twisting, horrifying thing that draws readers along, keeping them enthralled almost despite themselves. The intricacy of the timing, pacing, and plot is quite astounding given the length of the book, and the characters' journey to catch this monster is riddled with dead ends, double blinds, and shocking evidentiary information that lends Die for Me the creepy and frustrating tension that makes the police procedural aspects of the book so bleakly realistic.

And hands down, I can't think of a single killer in any book I've read recently that is more disturbing and traumatically horrifying than the one here. The depth of malevolence is doubly powerful for its utter sociopathic disregard for life. This is not a killer motivated by sexual perversions or a yen for power over his victims. He doesn't taunt the police with the intricacies of his crime or do things with the intent of getting caught. He is sadistically ruthless in his own pursuits and the rest of the world and their social and emotional mores mean absolutely nothing to him.

It makes him unique. It makes him monstrous. And it makes him one scary dude to read about. I would not in good conscience recommend this book for readers who are easily disturbed by atrocities perpetrated on human beings. The victims' injuries are discussed openly and graphically, even though it's in a more clinical sense, but there is more than one scene that disturbed me, and I've got a pretty high tolerance level for that sort of stuff. Sensitive readers should try one of Rose's other books and skip this one. And if you're the sort of reader who gets stuck imagining the physical and emotional torment of the victims as you read no matter how you try not to...you won't be sleeping well...or at all...for awhile.

The romance between Sophie and Vito evolves with all of Rose's typical adept-level skill, and she makes excellent use of a full-bodied stable of realistic secondary and ancillary characters to assist in that endeavor. I haven't read many authors who can so deftly and completely populate a book with characters that are flawed and wounded to varying degrees but trend towards intelligence and goodness, who are also believable in their actions, words, and motivations. Fewer still manage that with quite the same level of aplomb as Karen Rose does. She's fast becoming one of my favorite authors.

I haven't read her books in order as yet, but I'm going to start, as Rose excels in character crossover and connected backstory and I think it may serve to enhance the reading experience. The mind sort of boggles at whether that's even possible, but we'll see. I loved Die for Me as much as anyone can love something so grim on one side of the coin, and my admiration for Karen Rose only grows with each title I read.

Still...after this one, I may read some light romantic comedy, just to smooth out the rough edges left over from such a sadistic monster as the killer here. Then I'll be back.

Sophie Johannsen is an archeologist, she works at the Albright Museum of History. She has had to give up field work to come home and care for her grandmother, who raised her. Her grandmother is now in a nursing home and it takes every penny Sophie makes to keep her there. Katherine Bauer is the Medical Examiner for Philadelphia, she is also a sort of adopted mother to Sophie. When Katherine asks Sophie to bring her equiptment and check a location for graves, Sophie is glad to help. But she has brought herself to the attention of a serial killer by getting involved.

Vito Ciccotelli is a detective working on the case. Two years before a woman he had been in love with had been killed, Although she was another cop she had been involved in protecting someone who was wanted by the police and she was accidently shot. Vito was taking roses to her grave after work and they were in his truck. When Sophie saw the roses she immediately assumed he was taken. She had a very bad experience with a man during her last year of college. Only after they had become lovers did she find out he was married. So Sophie doesn't date and she doesn't trust men.

Sophie finds 16 graves all dug, 9 have bodies, but 7 are covered over waiting for the bodies that will fill them. The police realize now that they have a killer who intends to kill again. The bodies seem posed, one like a medaeval lady and one like a medaeval knight. The rest in differnt ways with horrible wounds. The worst is that the wounds are not post-mortem but happened while the people were alive and awake.

As in all Karen Rose books the romance and the mystery are closely intertwined. Vito needs Sophie's help and he finds her very attractive. Sophie finds Vito attractive but she has no use for someone committed to another. All the tangles get worked out between them and the mystery expands to Dutton, Georgia. As each strand of the case comes togather, Sophie becomes one of the designated victims and only Vito and his crew have a hope of saving her life. The murderer is much closer than they think.

I enjoyed it very much, this is a smart, complicated, sociopath and a very well written story.

Thick book - but worth the aching hands. The plot line interwoven throughout is very good with interesting insights into some of the more gruesome aspects of medieval life and a great balance of characters. Despite its size and the complexity of the plot (which in turn leads to several characters) the whole thing flows extremely well and I didn't start losing my way until 3am - then I had to put it down get a couple of hours sleep and start again this morning!
So that's the plot line. The characters are really very good - the baddy is very bad (and I guarantee if you have children at home who play computer games you will take a closer look at them - the games that is), trouble is he's also very believable. The main characters Sophie the gorgeous historian and archaeologist and Vito the detective are both well drawn with depth and a good range of emotions whilst the rest of the cast have personalities which are well drawn and fit in. The book is fast paced and although we find out a fair amount of background on the main characters the book is never bogged down with heavy explanations.

I have read all of Karen Rose's books to date and she seems to up the tension and emotion in each one. Well written and if you like a good thriller, with some romance and great characters please don't be put off by the size of the book it's a very satisfying read and so are her others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Auch was für Kenner des Genres
Reviewed in Germany on May 30, 2008

Also was soll ich noch sagen: klare Kaufempfehlung. War definitiv nicht mein letztes Buch von Karen Rose.

I read a few weeks ago Karen Rose's "You Belong to Me" and really enjoyed and decided to start reading her older novels in the right order.
    You Belong To Me

So DIE FOR ME came up. 700 page thick yet you will find it flows so easily I ended up reading mine during the Easter week end!
It is horrifying, gruesome and full of twists and identy mysteries. It is very well paced and never lets you relax. The cop is charismatic and so is his lady friend. It is full of great historical references too on medieval torture, if it rocks your boat! I guess it rocked mine, I learnt a lot.

I read the second half in one day I didn't want to go to bed not knowing the end. Now I cn sleep better.
I have the next two ordered and ready to be read.
