- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2009I really enjoyed this story. Usually when a couple struggles back and forth like Grant and Adeline do you find yourself frustrated and can't wait for it to be over, but that wasn't the case with me. I found myself caught up in all the problems and truly caring for each character. The real shocker to me was what happened with Grant's sister. I won't give it away here for future readers but to me this was highly unusual for the Victorian era and for the other historical romance books that I have read. I will be reading more books by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2007I really don't understand the low reviews this book has gotten. I think the heroine is an admirable one, independent. The story is believable and the characters interesting. I very much enjoyed this story and intend to seek out more books by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2008I agree with texas annie, do not know why the less than favourable reviews of this book. I had not read any of this authors previous books, but found this an enjoyable read, and one I did not want to put down once I started it. Loved the story. Will definately seek out more of her novels.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2007Typically in a romance book there is a character or characters you fall in love with or at least want to champion their fate or happiness. Had expected Adeline to be that character or perhaps Grant, but both were cold, shallow and at times nasty. Adeline makes poor, unbelieveable choices and says so much that does not match what they author tells you she is. She certainly does not live up to the books description.
A disappointing book, slow to build and in the end not worth the read time or cost to buy.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2014Ambiguously, I enjoyed this novel and I can't really say why. One thing for certain: the actions of the hero and heroine sometimes made me want to throw it into the nearest wastebasket. I forced myself to continue because I don't like to leave a story in mid-read.
Drunken Grant Leighton gets into the wrong bedroom, makes love to the wrong woman and awakens with no memory of it. He tells Adeline Osbourne he won't be forced into marrying her to protect her reputation. She says she wouldn't have him anyway and they go their separate ways. Now however, they're secretly lusting after each other and when they're inevitably thrown together in public again and again, they insult and revile each other while smiling sweetly for others' benefit. Later, when their accident liaison is discovered, Grant actually proposes to Adeline and is shaken when she turns him down. What did he expect? She'd already told him she wouldn't marry him but he's shocked and insulted when she refuses. Again. Grant wants to make love to Adeline again while in his right mind. Adeline wants the same thing but neither can get up the nerve to set aside their rocky initial meeting and be truthful with each other.
It could've gone well from there with the two reconciling, but it doesn't.
The real turn-off in this story is how they can insult each other one moment and be panting after each other the next while being so civil. Each appears a glutton for punishment from the other. Real people would've avoided each other like the proverbial plague. They certainly wouldn't have kept inviting the other's family for Christmas, houseparties, etc., so they're always in each other's company which is made even more awkward when HIS widowed mother starts "keeping company" with HER widower father. When they seem about to end their hostilities and admit their attraction, Lady Diana, Grant's sometimes mistress, generally appears to ruin things. I suppose Regency polite society wasn't given to public outbursts but would it have been so rude to take the woman aside and tell her she wasn't wanted and to please just...buzz off?
Halfway through the book, with the introduction of the subplot about Grant's sister Lettie, the story changes. Now Adeline is empowered by Lettie's free ways to become beautiful, attractive, and...somewhere along the line she and Grant actually come to like each other. Then they unite against the threat to Lettie.
This book has a lot going for it. The book is well written, the characters well delineated and perhaps that's a show of the author's skill since they raised my ire so. There are so many threads tangled and all leading back to the two main characters. It's all entertaining but the two parts of the book don't mesh into a pleasing whole and the initial introduction of the characters and their unpleasantness to each other just doesn't sit well. It's a kind of Taming of the Shrew without the comedy. Perhaps it was because this story didn't follow the usual Regency/Victorian guidelines but it was unsatisfying. It is, however, memorable, perhaps for that very reason.
