Flirting with Forty: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 129 ratings

Now a Lifetime movie, Jane Porter's beloved novel follows a divorced single mom who finds an unexpected, forbidden romance with a much younger man while on vacation in Hawaii.

He got the second home and the Porsche. She got the kids and a broken heart. Now Jackie, post-divorce and heading toward the big four-oh, is on vacation in sunny and staring down her upcoming birthday-alone. But not for long. She's soon falling for Kai, her gorgeous, much younger surf instructor, and the wild passionate fling they have becomes the biggest surprise of Jackie's life.

Back home in Seattle, Jackie has to struggle with single parenthood...and memories of Kai. He hasn't forgotten her. Yet thousands of miles of ocean-not to mention an age difference that feels even wider-separate them. And, of course, her friends disapprove. When a choice must be made, can she, will she risk everything for her chance at happiness?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Porter's second dip into the chick lit pool (after The Frog Prince), Seattle single mom Jackie Laurens begins wondering how important happiness is: divorced with two kids and a thriving decorating business, she assumes she's happy, but can't help feeling like something's missing. When her married friend, Anne, arranges for the two of them to indulge in a Hawaiian getaway in honor of Jackie's 40th birthday, Jackie agrees. Anne backs out at the last second, but Jackie decides to suffer through the vacation solo. Hawaii is gorgeous, but the hotel pool deck groans under the weight of middle-aged men whose coarse chutzpah is only overshadowed by their flabby bellies. Just before she resigns herself to the depressing prospects, she meets Kai, a sexy, tan and much younger surfing instructor. Life doesn't get better, only more complicated as Jackie tries to balance the sultry, sweaty joys of Hawaii and Kai with the obligations of motherhood. Porter's romance roots show in the gratuitous sex scenes and in how easily tears flow from Jackie's eyes, but this book fits the bill as a calorie-free accompaniment for a poolside daiquiri. (July)

From Booklist

Divorced with two kids, Jackie Laurens is facing her fortieth birthday, and she is depressed. Hr friend Anne decides that they should go to Hawaii to celebrate but backs out once they're at the airport. So, Jackie goes solo. She has never done anything like this before and is full of trepidation. The trip turns into a series of firsts, including surfing lessons and sex with Kai, her young, hunky instructor. Jackie realizes it's a cliche, but she can't stop thinking of Kai after she gets home. Over the next few months, she makes several return trips to the island. Even though her friends are no longer supportive of her, Jackie can't let go of Kai--until her daughter is hospitalized while Jackie is away. Riddled with guilt, she breaks off the relationship, but what she thinks is the end is only the beginning of her issues with Kai. Readers of a certain age will find much to empathize with in this amusing, poignant, and compelling story. Maria Hatton

I have loved this book since I saw a part of it in women’s day many years ago. I love the adventures of Jackie and Kai and how Jackie finally grows up and feels good about herself

It's a story about finding yourself or a mid life crisis for a woman. Could be a story for any age of womanhood who hasn't really found herself or the self confidence to really live and enjoy life.

This is a great book, especially for women who ever fantasize about escaping ex-husbands and day-to-day struggles with work and kids.

I love this movie, so I got the book. As usual, the book is even better, and as a 40+ woman, I fully understand the struggles of career, motherhood, other people's expectations, and how easily we lose our true selves....this book eloquently portrays that and gives hope that we can come back to our true selves.

I loved the movie made from this book so I bought it based on all the positive (Amazon) reviews and now I'm sorry I did.
The first few chapters go on endlessly about Jackie, who is turning forty, and her insecurities. BORING! And totally uninspirational.
Half way through the book I wanted to throw it across the room in frustration but decide to donate it to charity instead.

Flirting with Forty by Jane Porter is about Jackie, a soon to be forty year old recently divorced mother of two young children. Jackie is overwhelmed about doing everything alone caring for her children, operating a successful business and feels totally left out as her inner circle of friends are all married. She goes on a birthday vacation to Hawaii, meets a much younger surfing instructor, returns home determined to restart her life, stop being miserable and live the life that makes her happy. I received a copy of this book in the mail, and it’s my opinion that woman, even married ones, need to read this and yes, even men, I think, could benefit from reading it. It is a romantic story that is heartwarming with some humor in it as well. In my opinion, the author totally captured the essence of how women cope with balancing careers while raising their children alone and trying to adjust after the emotional upset and trauma of life after divorce.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, Even for a Bloke!

As a relatively older man, you might wonder why I was reading this, but it’s a genre that is such fun - I also like rom-com too! This is a great read that certainly gives insights into the trials island tribulations of this soccer-mom! I totally felt for her as she moved her life forwards from the stuckness of her responsibilities from her completely unpleasant husband. I dissociate myself from his dismissal of this strong woman who seeks adventure against all the odds. A true template for women to be themselves, even to the disdain of her envious ‘sisters’. Men could learn a lot from reading this and oh, it’s funny too, between the angst. Will seek out her other book now!

I saw the film a while back and loved it and wondered if it was available as a book and I discovered it on Amazon. A fab holiday read, basically it's about a 40 year old woman who has been left with her 2 kids after her and her husband split up. She decides to take a short break with a friend to Hawaii and there she meets Kai who is alot younger than her. the relationship blossoms and without spoiling it, the ending is good. I would love to read more books by Jane Porter, an easy to read chicklit book.
