Losing Ground: A Mystery (Detective Chief Inspector C.D. Sloan Book 21) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 182 ratings

"Fans have waited two years for another of Aird's Calleshire County police procedurals, and if you like golf, this well-crafted whodunit was especially worth the wait….Full of poetical, biblical and Shakespearian references, this fun read delivers a denouement that finishes the game well under par. Nicely played."
Publishers Weekly on Hole in One

"Trust mystery writer Catherine Aird to add her own special twists and lots of biting wit to murder…the settings are classic, the characters delightfully quirky, and the words of wisdom many." –
Boston Herald on Amendment of Life

The dramatic theft of an 18th Century painting is discovered just moments before the old manor house from which it was stolen – and is uniquely depicted in the background of the portrait -- is set on fire. Making matters more grisly even is the pile of bones that is sighted in the blazing inferno moments before the roof collapses. What started as simple, if surprising, theft has quickly escalated to arson and, possibly murder, and now Detective Inspector Sloan and Detective Constable Crosby have to piece together, a puzzle which has its roots deep in Berebury's history. Although Tolmie Park, the property on which the manor house sits, has had a somewhat checkered and mysterious past there are those in the community who would fight to preserve it. There are also a number of factions within the area who have differing plans to develop the property, shrouding the fire in further suspicion. It is up D.C.I. C.D. Sloan to sift through this assortment of characters and, finally, illuminate the truth.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Ric Jerrom delivers an outstanding narration that brings to life the assorted characters of Catherine Aird's imaginary village of Calleshire. This mystery is another in the Inspector Sloan series, featuring the unpretentious, unperturbed detective and squabbling, conniving villagers bent upon cheating, stealing, and even murder...Jerrom narrates in a genteel manner at a leisurely pace, both of which befit this classic cozy.

I can read and read this author. Well written. A good mystery without being depressive.

Sloan and Crosby are back and haven't changed. They still do their work in a peaceful little Calleshire County, which has a murder rate on a level with that of Cabot Cove. This story had a bit more to it, a murder and possible arson and a few more oddball characters. Aird is always a good read, it's just hard not to compare all her books to "The Stately Home Murder" and hope she can repeat how good that one was.

I enjoy British mysteries...and I liked this one, except it seemed a bit too wordy for my taste, and I couldn't really get into the story. But enjoyable for all that.

The theft from a museum of a painting of no apparent worth together with a few small items from a display case leaves Sloan and Crosby baffled as there seems no motivation for the crime at all. Then someone sets fire to a house that used to belong to the subject of the painting and the plot thickens. The reader is taken into a dubious world of planning applications, disputed land ownership and threatened takeover bids before Sloan and Crosby manage to unravel both cases and solve the mystery.

I love this series with it's wry humour and likeable police characters and this episode is well up to the author's usual standard. The books bear re-reading as I first started reading them back in the nineteen seventies and have re-read all of them more than once. If you like cosy crime series by authors such as Veronica Heley and Hazel Holt then try Catherine Aird.

I like most Catherine Aird mysteries, but I had to stop reading this one at page 116, where there were thirteen pages missing. I had been struggling at that point with the deluge of characters — the development team, the conservation team, fire department personnel, insurance assessors, and campsite personnel — to name just a few.

There’s lots of drama about a venerable old wreck of a mansion in the middle of nowhere and a painting stolen from a museum. I tried to follow the story, but it was impossible with so many characters, and on top of that, mixed up pagination and missing pages.

Don’t buy the St. Martin’s Minotaur hardback edition. The editor must have been drunk.

Catherine Aird with Sloan and Crosby are good entertainment and this does not disappoint. I was agreeably taken by surprise by the denouement. However,as comparisons are odious, to compare her with Margery Allingham leaves me without words.
