Organic Church: Growing Faith Where Life Happens (Jossey-Bass Leadership Network Series) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 198 ratings

“Neil Cole is a true trailblazer for today’s church. His story will inspire you and equip you to experience the living Christ in community.” —Jonathan S. Campbell, author of The Way of Jesus

Churches have tried all kinds of ways to attract new and younger members—revised vision statements, hipper worship, contemporary music, livelier sermons, bigger and better auditoriums. But there are still so many people who aren’t being reached, who don’t want to come to church. And the truth is that attendance at church on Sundays does not necessarily transform lives; God’s presence in our hearts is what changes us. Leaders and laypeople everywhere are realizing that they need new and more powerful ways to help them spread God’s Word.

According to international church starter and pastor Neil Cole, if we want to connect with young people and those who are not coming to church, we must go where people congregate. Cole shows readers how to plant the seeds of the Kingdom of God in the places where life happens and where culture is formed—restaurants, bars, coffeehouses, parks, locker rooms, and neighborhoods.
Organic Church offers a hands-on guide for demystifying this new model of church and shows the practical aspects of implementing it.

“Neil Cole expertly places a thrilling invitation before us to join probably the most exciting spiritual pilgrimage going on today: the global migration of a church on the way back home. Come and dial in!” —Wolfgang Simson, author of Houses that Change the World

--John C. Maxwell, founder, INJOY, INJOY Stewardship Services and EQUIP

"My life is about seeing hundredfold results. Neil Cole s approach helps get those kinds of results for churches by planting many new expressions of the Kingdom that reach thousands of people. One of the great joys of my life for the past six years has been to watch the dramatic growth of Awakening Chapels and the organic churches described in this work. Cole s new book tell not only the inspiring story but also describes the principles, so you can apply these ideas."
--Bob Buford, founder and chairman, Leadership Network; author,
Halftime and Finishing Well

"I always listen when Neil Cole speaks. His breadth of understanding and practice of what he preaches is right on. Everyone should know or be aware of this guy that God is using in a powerful way."
--Bob Roberts, senior pastor, NorthWood Church, Keller, Texas

"Neil Cole is one of the foremost thinkers and practitioners organic forms of church. His vision of the church is as new as it is ancient. Cole s story as well as the philosophy of Church Multiplication Associates is paradigmatic for the church as it seeks to negotiate its way faithfully into the twenty-first century."
--Alan Hirsch, director, Forge Mission Training Network, church planter; author,
The Shaping of Things to Come

"In an age where millions are saying God yes, church no! most of us instinctively feel that church as we know it prevents church as God wants it. But where, exactly, is the catch? Where do we go from here? Neil Cole expertly places a thrilling invitation before us to join probably the most exciting spiritual pilgrimage going on today: the global migration of a church on the way back home. Come and dial in!"
--Wolfgang Simson, author,
Houses that Change the World

"Church multiplication is not likely to be the province of ivory tower theoreticians! In Organic Church Neil Cole helps us to understand that church multiplication is never going to be a spectator sport. This is hands down the most useful and comprehensive book currently available to understanding the rapidly growing expressions of simple, organic church life around the world."
--Dr. N. A. (Tony) Dale, editor,
House 2 House Magazine

"I heartily recommend this book. It is packed with deep insights; you will find no fluff in it. Among the books on church planting, it offers a rare combination of attributes: it is biblical and well written, its model has proven effective, and it is authored by a practitioner rather than an observer or an ivory-tower theoretician."
--Curtis Sergeant, directory of church planting, Saddleback Church, Lake Forest, California

"It is a great joy to recommend Neil Cole s Organic Church. The stories and experiences in this book will encourage many to follow the Holy Spirit and go where God is leading. It's about time we acknowledged that the church in the Western world basically is not working. Lost in politics, humanism, consumerism, and lovelessness, it simply has no power to attract anyone to Christ, and more often rather has become a stumbling block.

Ironically, it is in oppressed settings such as China and Africa that the church is thriving. Is it the element of persecution per se that accounts for this?

Not necessarily. Rather, hostile cultures force the Church to cling to her relational roots. Ecclesiology and polity remain primitive and effective, impractical doctrinal distinctions remain an unaffordable luxury, and the focus remains intensely on Jesus, brotherly love, and evangelism.

Neil Cole has written, from experience, a book that describes what the Western Church looks like when it gets back to basics. Shorn of the trappings, what is left? A church that in my view very much resembles that which we read of in the New Testament itself.

Neil makes a great case for taking the church to the harvest field, and for turning converts immediately into workers. And he very insightfully finds repeated, strong Biblical basis for doing just that. He also dispenses gems of practical evangelistic wisdom from the Scriptures that I had never begun to come across before.

Really, what has our adoption of corporate structures and strategies brought us? They work when selling products to customers with disposable income, but not when we're trying to engender a life-transforming and costly level of devotion to the Savior.

Many times I was in tears reading of the power in simple relational church - even boiled down to the essential two or three gathered, with Jesus in their midst. The power to meet people where they really live. The power to meet needs and to exchange emptiness for love and purpose. The power to overcome deep darkness.

Time and again, there would be a community where darkness reigned. One person was found as a beachhead, a church was started virtually on the fly, and conversions and transformations became epidemic.

And epidemic is the correct word. This book is about the viral spread of Christianity, the kind of dynamicism we read about with longing in the Acts and the Letters. We've seen the power of viral "marketing" in the spread of interactive internet sites such as youttube and myspace. It's about time that the Church reclaimed what it itself pioneered all those centuries ago!

Maybe then we won't have tragedies such as people rejected from churches because they can't go along with building programs or clerical career paths, and then spending their days wondering where the church of Jesus Christ might be - or if it even exists at all.

This is a very well-written book, and a very compelling read. I could quibble about a few minor Biblical points, but it's not worth it. This book is headed for the very top echelon of my favorites list. If you've hit a dead end with the way church is traditionally done, I highly recommend that you give this a read. It is among a crop of recent such books I am reading, and is the best yet. I believe its precepts are entirely Biblical, are close to the heart of God, and indeed are critical for such a time as this, as we see the church ebbing and Christ marginalized.

As such, what this book relates will be life-transforming for those who are serious about moving forward with God. And be warned, if you are ripe for this message, I doubt the church's traditional structures will ever satisfy you again.

Just a fantastic job, Neil. How do we get something going in NY?

    To His great glory.

Neil Cole's book Organic Church chronicles a return to growing faith organically. Cole is one those Christians that you just may immediately like. In regard to the church fulfilling it's destiny, this is a pivotal work. In regard to the individual believer fulfilling his or her destiny, it's liberation and license rolled into one. The truth is: Jesus came to set us free from religious bondage and at the same time empower us to do the work of the coming kingdom, no license required.

The anointed idea of Life Transformation Groups is worth the price of the book. p. 27-28, 67-68, 111. If you have this book and missed this point, here is your flashing sign of a God-idea if I ever saw one....

In these weekly small groups: They read copious amounts of scripture, answer character questions in small settings of two or three, pray specifically for the lost and write their names down to pray through the week.

Cole plays down the hindrances to spontaneous expansion of the church, but at least acknowledges their existence: buildings, budgets, and big shots. It cannot help but anger those in traditional church settings to hear this said, out loud. I remember also how Jesus himself upset the religious leaders of his day that had drifted off into the traditions of men. Neil plays it cool and is not bent on ruffling feathers, but in helping newbies find their organic wings and learn to fly.

Now I also want to recommend a follow-up book: Search and Rescue. This really gets into Life Transformation Groups in more detail and I think it serves as a true sequel to Organic, icing on the cake for sure. Neil was nice enough recently to post that his new book Ordinary Hero is actually the same book. And even went further stating that another book Cultivating a Life for God is the same material aimed at a different audience. I appreciate not having to find this out on my own.

And if this isn't enough check out [...], lots of good stuff. I particularly like the articles and one specific page: 20 Books That Shaped Us. The rest is up to you. Cheers, Bruce

I always felt something was wrong with the Church setup, but couldn't pin it down
to the leaders or even anyone, but over the years, the Lord has moved me gradually
to be prepared for what I am reading in this book.

If you want to live the truth and stop being misled by many of these so-called pastors? This is your book. Written with lack of egotism (common in most church leaders) and simple truth. You will be taken on a journey that exposes you to what God intended when He started the Church. It is awful how Christians have been misled by institutionalized church - really unfortunate.

    Highly recommended!!!

When you read and act on what you've read, you will begin to get fulfilled in being a follower of Christ.

The concepts Cole speaks of are simple and more biblical than anything I’ve heard about churches in the past. I am so grateful for the candid stories and encouragements in rare honest writing that I am changed for the better in my walk as a Jesus follower wanting to make disciples like He did.

I'll be honest - a few pages into this book I wasn't enjoying it. Having got used to the often understated approach of emerging church type books I found Neil Cole's gung-ho writing style quite annoying. However, as the book's proposition sounded interesting I perservered and I'm extremely glad I did. There is some superb material in this book, for instance the Simple Church model it proposes, an obvious incarnational DNA, the voice of real experience, and lots of very quoteable one-liners such as "We need to lower the bar on how church is done and raise the bar on what it means to be a disciple." This book is manna from heaven for anyone braving the desert sands that lie beyond church-as-we-know-it in hope of eventually entering a more fruitful future.
