Chapter One
Present Day, Raleigh, North Carolina, Monday, September 26, 10:00 A.M.THE FACT THAT HE'D SEEN MORE HORRIFIC SCENES over the course of his career should have made this one easier to mentally process.
Should have.
It didn't.
Special Agent Steven Thatcher loosened his tie, but it didn't do a thing to help the flow of air to his lungs. It didn't do a thing to change what he'd found in the clearing after the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation received an anonymous tip leading them to this place.
It certainly didn't do a thing to bring the poor dead woman back to life.
So Steven centered the knot of his tie right over the lump in his throat. He stepped forward carefully, earning him a glare from the rookie Forensics had sent because the rookie's boss had picked the week they discovered a gruesome, brutal murder to take a cruise to the Caribbean.
Now, looking at the mangled corpse, heavily scavenged by whatever creatures lived in these woods, Steven couldn't help wishing he were on a boat far from civilization, too.
"Watch your feet," the rookie cautioned from his hands-and-knees position on the grass next to the body, irritation in his voice. Kent Thompson was reputed to be quite good, but Steven would hold his judgment. However, the fact Kent hadn't thrown up yet was a stroke in his favor.
"Thank you for the lesson in crime-scene investigation," Steven replied dryly and Kent's cheeks went redder than chili peppers.
Kent sat back on his heels and looked away. "I'm sorry," he said quietly. "I'm frustrated. I've checked this entire area three times. Whoever left her here didn't leave anything else behind."
"Maybe the ME will find something on the body," Steven said.
Kent sighed. "What's left of it." He looked back at the corpse, clinical detachment on his face. But Steven also noted the flicker of controlled compassion in the young man's eyes and was satisfied. Kent would do his job, but still remember the victim. Another stroke in the newbie's favor.
"Sorry, Steven," said a ragged voice behind him and Steven turned to find Agent Harry Grimes taking labored breaths as he slipped a handkerchief in his pocket. Harry's face was pale, although the green tinge had passed along with the Egg McMuffin Harry had downed on his way to the scene.
New to the SBI, Harry had been assigned to Steven for training. Harry showed a lot of promise, except for his very weak stomach. But Steven couldn't blame him too much. He might have lost his own breakfast had he taken the time to eat any. "It's okay, Harry. It happens."
"Have we found anything?" Harry asked.
"Not yet." Steven crouched down next to the body, a pen in his gloved hand. "Nude, no ID or clothing anywhere around. There's enough left of her to know she was female."
"Adolescent female," Kent added and Steven's head shot up.
"What?"
"Adolescent female is my guess," Kent said, pointing to the corpse's torso. "Pierced navel."
Harry's gulp was audible. "How can you tell?"
Kent's mouth quirked up. "You could see if you put your face a bit closer."
"I don't think so," said Harry in a strangled voice.
Steven balanced himself on the balls of his feet, still crouched. "Okay, an adolescent female. She's been here at least a week. We'll need to run a check through missing persons." He gently rolled the body over and felt his heart skip a beat at the same time Harry cursed softly.
"What?" Kent asked, looking from Steven up to Harry and back at Steven. "What?"
A grimness settled over Steven and he pointed his pen at the remains of the young girl's left buttock. "She had a tattoo."
Kent leaned closer, then looked up, still squinting. "Looks like a peace symbol."
Steven looked up at Harry who wore a look of the same grim acknowledgment. "Lorraine Rush," Steven said and Harry nodded.
"Who was Lorraine Rush?" Kent asked.
"Lorraine was reported missing about two weeks ago," Harry said quietly. "Her parents went in to wake her up for school and found her bed slept in but empty."
"No evidence of forced entry," Steven added, looking at the corpse with new concern. "We had to assume she'd run away. Her parents insisted she never would run, that she'd been kidnapped."
"Parents always insist their kids would never run away," Harry said. "You still don't know that she didn't and just met up with some rough character along the way."
Steven could see in his mind's eye the picture of Lorraine as she'd been, the smiling girl in the photograph on the Rushes' fireplace mantel. "She was sixteen. A year younger than my oldest son." Steven let his thoughts briefly linger on his troubled son who'd undergone such a radical change in personality in the last month. But that was another worry. He'd dwell on his very personal problem of Brad when he'd put Lorraine Rush out of his mind. Whenever that would be.
"Damn shame," said Kent.
Steven pushed himself to his feet and stared down at what was left of what had once been a beautiful, vibrant young woman. Pushed back the primal rage at the monster who could take the life of another so brutally. "We'll need to inform her parents." He didn't look forward to that task.
Breaking the tragic news of a loved one's murder should have been easier after all these years.
Should have been.
It wasn't.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2010Steven Thatcher has known tragedy and fear. His wife was killed in a car accident years ago, leaving him to raise three sons. Six months ago his youngest son Nicky was kidnapped from his bed by a madman intent on punishing Steven. His eldest son Brad has been acting out for the past month, and Steven, special agent for the state Bureau of Investigations, is in a wild race to find a serial killer hunting high school cheerleaders.
Jenna Marshall, Ph.D., is Brad's teacher, and upon his latest failing grade on a test for a class in which he'd previously done very well, Jenna can't keep from contacting his father any longer. After a horrible experience with another parent of a failing child, she wasn't enthusiastic about the possibility of another conflict. Steven Thatcher isn't like that other father, however. In fact, he's like no one she's ever met before. He's...Hagen Daz Rocky Road in a room full of store brand vanilla. And she really, really likes Rocky Road.
A sadistic killer stalks teenage girls and malicious mischief and threats of harm start to pile up against Jenna. Steven is captivated by her but wounded by a past that shook him to the core. He's no closer to identifying and stopping a monster and he keeps messing up the relationship he desperately wants to pursue with the first woman to make it past his shields since his wife's death. Tension and stress reach explosive levels and keeping Jenna safe starts taking priority, but his family is falling apart and his job is becoming more and more frantic. There's just so much one man can take before everything goes boom.
Karen Rose is a master storyteller and has a gift for wending endearing romance and taut suspense into a single solid read that provides ultimate entertainment. The strength in Have You Seen Her? lies in the complex, likable characters that Rose imbues with depth and personality. There are no cardboard cutouts here, but flawed, real people with their own perks and peccadilloes.
Strong willed and independent Jenna has a good heart and a lot of compassion for friends and students alike, but has a tendency to assume too much responsibility and fails to let those who love her take care of her...even when she needs it. Steven is utterly at a loss with one son who suddenly seems to hate him and another who hasn't recovered from his trauma. His aunt won't stop setting him up with blind dates and the very thing that makes him so good at his job - his dedication - is causing so many problems with his family he feels almost like he's hiding from them.
These two are surrounded by secondary and ancillary characters that could be neighbors and friends, they're so realistic, and Steven's boys are particularly endearing - especially Matt. They all round out and embellish a twisted, intricate plot of death and deception that is told with Rose's impeccable style and timing. The mystery was dual pronged and nicely layered, and while the perpetrator of the slaughter of innocent girls maybe isn't the hardest thing to figure out early on, the big picture is much less so and the story provided enough twists and turns and surprises to keep me invested throughout.
The romance was well done, and evolved with a natural tempo organic to the character development and plot. I was particularly fond of the scenes between Jenna and Nicky as Jenna starts to become familiar with Steven's sons. I was less convinced with Jenna's response to an issue that came up between her and Steven late in the book - it felt a bit too harsh given the nature of the issue and knowing Jenna's personality. The whole of it smacked a little like orchestrated melodrama, but even with that, my overall opinion of the romance is very positive.
I had a couple of technical issues with the narrative at the beginning of the book, which felt a little repetitive as the plot and characters were starting to be identified and introduced, and Jenna's friend Casey refers to her students' book analysis of Dostoevsky as themes and I've never heard that before in that context, so I wasn't totally sure what exactly Casey meant. It becomes a plot point, so I wish I'd had a clearer picture. Other than those few small points, which didn't detract much from the reading experience, I was thrilled with this book and think Rose has established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the romantic suspense genre. She blends both aspects together flawlessly and provides top notch entertainment while doing so. I can't wait to read more. I can only hope it's a lot more. 4.5 Stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2022While this book was well written and for the most part read smoothly, there were a few places that it dragged a bit or had typos that pulled me temporarily from the story. Other wise I enjoyed it immensely. The characters were well fleshed and easy to relate to, even the bad guys. Towards the end I had a good idea who the killer was, but the author still managed to surprise me with a twist or two.
I listened to a third of the book on audio then switched to reading due to my environment. I found I preferred the ebook over the audio. The narrator did a good job in enunciation, but the female voices, especially Jenna's did not come close to what I pictured she would sound like. Jenna sounded young and unsure, not like the strong woman she was. Of course this is just my opinion, and each person is different. I would suggest you listen to a sample before you purchase the audio version.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2004Well, I found out what Romantic Suspense is by reading this book. It is a mix of sizzling romance with mystery/suspense. I read a variety of things, but have never read a book quite like this one.
Special Agent Steven Thatcher is the lead investigator on a series of serial killings in his small town - the killer targets young, innocent teenage girls. He meets his teenage son's teacher, Jenna Marshall who is concerned about his son's falling grades. They feel an immediate attraction for one another, but due to losses and disappointments in their previous relationships, they resist each other's affections.
After the initial chapters, which included sizzling descriptions about how the main characters felt about each other, I almost put this book down. I was afraid the book would be more romance and very little suspense. I was wrong. I am so glad I didn't give up on this one.
Though romance is at the core of this story, the suspense is so hair raising and realistic that I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish reading this book. As with any good mystery/suspense, this writer managed to throw out enough clues to lead you along the path of who the killer was yet still hit you with a big surprise you at the end - the killer is not the person you think he is.
This was a highly entertaining read, I highly recommend it. You may just stay up past your bedtime reading it too.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2014Karen Rose is amazing in her talent. She creates a world that captures the reader from the first page. You'll root for the romance between the characters but be enthralled with the mystery surrounding them. This was the first I've read from her and I will be honest in saying the only reason I had this book in my possession was because I forgot to click do not send when I was a member of doubleday book club. I hadn't planned on reading it but the back caught me and before I knew it I was on the edge of my seat wondering who the villain was how the heroine was going to survive a stalker that knew every move she made. After reading Have You Seen Her? I immediately went to her first book and have been a fan of her books since. You won't regret. Strong female characters, intriguing men and amazing plot turns and twists. Only warning, once you read one you'll want to read the rest.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2005I have read every novel written by Ms. Rose and I must stand up and cheer! Her characters are well described and her accounts are vivid. She finds a way to make the reader relate to her characters, drawing one in further.
This book was interesting to me because of the use of characters from her other novels. (It was like visiting an old friend.) The plot was rich, and the ending always makes one feel good.
In a time when we shed enough tears, it is wonderful to smile at the end of a novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whoa
This was a re-read for me (last read 2016). My original thoughts weren't much: "Steven was a bit of a jerk, and so was Brad. Loved Jenna, Nicky, and Matt, though." All still true, but I will add to the review. I enjoyed the dynamics of Jenna's family and friends. Davies was hit and miss for me but came through in the end. The whodunit was wonderful.
I highly recommend re-reading. It gives you insight into your own maturity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Schöne Liebesgeschichte- Krimi und Spannung kommt ein wenig kurz
