Sunny Cooper has been running since she was eighteen—from the New Mexican commune where she grew up . . . and from the haunting memory of the freak accident that took the life of her younger sister. Now, at thirty-two, Sunny voices radio spots in Albuquerque while struggling to hold on to a floundering relationship. But when a second tragic accident—and the devastating truths that come to light in its aftermath—turns her world upside down, Sunny runs again.

In the town of Harmony on San Miguel Island, she takes a new job, learns to ride a motorcycle, and makes some surprising new friends. But the past is never far behind. A startling discovery—along with an emotional and revelatory reunion with her estranged mother—is forcing Sunny to step out from the shadows of yesterday to embrace an uncertain future.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Satisfying psychological depth and original characters help move along Hendricks's clumsily plotted latest. Sunny Cooper still has problems with Gwen, her mother. Raised on a New Mexico commune, Sunny now lives in Albuquerque with her boyfriend, Michael, doing voice-over work. When Michael is killed in a mysterious accident, Sunny discovers he was not who she thought he was, and creditors and cops inundate her. Looking for solace, Sunny heads back to the commune, where she finds her mother to be the same maddening hippie chick she always was. Again, fed up and out of options, Sunny decides to sell everything and leave, this time for San Miguel Island off the coast of Washington, where, in a little town called Harmony, she tries to rebuild her life. But events from her past follow her to the island, and before long she's heading off-island for some closure. Hendricks's gentle humor and vivid depictions of island and communal life put a little sugar on the unfortunate and overbusy plot. (Feb.)

Review

“Hendricks has an engaging narrative voice that will pull readers right into this story of a damaged woman who is more resilient than she realizes.”

Judith Ryan Hendricks was born in San Jose, California, when Silicon Valley was the Santa Clara Valley, better known for orchards than for computer chips.

Armed with a degree in journalism, she worked as a journalist, copywriter, computer instructor, travel agent, waitress and baker before turning to fiction writing. Her experiences at the McGraw Street Bakery in Seattle led to her first novel, BREAD ALONE and the sequel, THE BAKER’S APPRENTICE. The third book in the series, BAKER’S BLUES, will be published in August 2015.

A life-long infatuation with the Southwest provided inspiration for ISABEL’S DAUGHTER and her fourth book, THE LAWS OF HARMONY. Hendricks’ fiction has been translated into 12 languages and distributed in more than 16 countries worldwide.

Her nonfiction has appeared in The San Francisco Chronicle and Tiny Lights, A Journal of Personal Essay, Grand Gourmet in Italy and The London Sunday Express. Her short fiction has appeared in Woman’s Weekly in Britain and AMERICAN GIRLS ON THE TOWN, an anthology, in the U.S. and U.K.

I just finished reading "The Laws of Harmony" by Judith Hendricks and all I can say is that I am so sorry it is over. Several years ago, I picked up "Bread Alone" and loved it so I went on to read her other two novels. This particular one has been in my TBR stack for quite a while but I waited to read it until my book group decided to select it for the month. It was my recommendation and I am so pleased that it was every bit as good as I had hoped.

Sunny Cooper grew up in a New Mexico commune, one of three children born to hippie parents who were into free love, alcohol and drugs, and a rejection of material possessions. Wanting nothing more than to not share living quarters with twenty-five of her closest friends, when she turned 18 years old she left, hoping to live a more "normal" life style. This novel starts out with her in her early 30s and dealing with a romantic relationship that isn't going well. What he wants, she seems unable to give. The relationship is falling apart and she is at a loss to understand how to repair it. While this background may lead you to believe this is a romance novel, it is far from that. The relationship is just a springboard for us to understand Sunny and how life has unfolded for her. Some suspense, some women's fiction, and a tiny bit of romance come together to create a wonderful whole that will appeal to many readers.

I have spent the past several years on a tear to clean out and de-clutter my home and have given away many books but Ms. Hendricks' three previous novels still sit on my bookshelf - I just can't let go of them. Fortunately, I bought this one for my Kindle so it won't take up any room and I will always have it since it is definitely worth a re-read. Her writing is absolutely seamless and what I mean by that is that it is so good and she draws you so totally into the novel that the story is just like a film playing in my head and the words just disappear off of the page. My only complaint is that she has only written four novels over the years and I would love to read more.

If you like writers like Elizabeth Berg and Anne Tyler, please give Judith Hendricks a try. Wonderful book, wonderful author.

While it took me a bit to get pulled in to the book, once "in" I had a hard time putting it down. Thoughtful and thought-provoking story that interweaves a mystery, reconciling one's past, and searching for a worthwhile life. I really liked it.

Although this book was published quite a while back, I would request a sequel please! I have read all of Ms. Hendricks books and have really enjoyed them. This was no exception, I didn't want it to end. I think it was definitely ended in a way that readers could hope for a continuation. I don't recap stories in my reviews but this one was good from beginning to end. It goes back and forth from Sunny in the present to her remembering things from her childhood and growing up. Most of the main characters are likeable, I especially liked Piggy and how kind he was to Sunny, I could imagine this large bear of a man but with a soft spot for the people around him. When reading I could imagine the sounds of the birds, the dampness of the trees around the cottage, the smell of the woods, watching the ferry come in so all in all for me this was an excellent written book and I very much enjoyed it.

Hendricks has a wonderful ability to draw the reader into her books - and I've read and enjoyed all of them. Hippies, communes, mother/daughter relationships, and jumping off into the nowhere of a totally different environment, gives Sunny the opportunity to reinvent herself. The warmth of new friendships in Harmony, a small town in the San Juan Islands, gradually allow her to believe in a future, vastly different from her past. A very unexpected change to her circumstances brings her face to face with the need to mesh herself even more tightly in island living and resolve anger and anguish she's carried into her adult life. Loved the characters and hope there might be a sequel.

Not exactly a believable situation but likeable characters. I'd pass this one along to a friend but wouldn't rave over it.

I really like this author. This was a fantastic book. I felt things were tied together so well, and it was a "real" story, in spite of being fiction - I could relate to the main character - she was three dimensional. Very enjoyable read. Bread Alone by the same author is also great.

Have read Judith's books and prefer the others to this one. Good story and nice read, just preferred the others she has written. I do look forward to more books from her!

I think what amazed me the most about this author's work is how convincingly she paints her characters. Whether the leading lady or a supporting actress she truly makes you wish you could meet all of them. I appreciate how strong the women are or become. Her books are about loss, but more about hope. I anxiously await her next book!

Very good read, engrossing. Reminded me of a Barbara Kingsolver novel. I would describe the genre as that of a strong woman coming to terms with life’s difficulties and her journey towards making a satisfying life despite all. Plus a good sense of place and sensitivity to landscape.

4.0 out of 5 stars The laws of a good story
