Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Klauer's diet plan isn't revolutionary, but her approach is noteworthy. The author, a research fellow at St. Luke's–Roosevelt Hospital with a practice on Park Avenue, has a clientele comprising primarily successful businessmen and -women, "ladies who lunch" and celebrities—people with the drive to do whatever it takes to succeed, in the boardroom, in social circles or on the gym floor. They understand and practice Klauer's "nonnegotiables": daily exercise, the consumption of protein and calcium, the management of food cravings and the elimination of processed food. Although some readers won't be able to follow all of Klauer's advice—a personal trainer isn't within everyone's budget, nor can everyone choose the healthy Manhattan chain Better Burger over McDonald's—but there are many useful suggestions here. Try grilled shrimp over lentils with a cup of steamed broccoli for dinner, with a side of mineral water, and when traveling, beware the hotel minibar (the Park Avenue mindset creeps in with such lines as "better groups, such as... the Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons, allow special meal requests that can be preordered"). Sticking to Klauer's strict regimen isn't easy, but neither is life on Park Avenue.

Like many women, I have lost weight many, many times, but keeping it off has been difficult. In January, I went back to my popular meeting type weight loss program, but this time I started to read everything I could on the topic and incorporated many of the ideas I learned on my own with my program. I've enjoyed a lot of success and sense strongly that this time the weight is going to stay off.

Some of the information I learned on my own is similar to what is outlined in Klauer's book, so almost by accident I have been following her program to a large extent. Don't hesitate to purchase this book if, like me, you are an avid weight loss reader. Klauer provides plenty of new information and is very motivating.

Almost instantly, the weight started to come off rather nicely, my energy level improved and best of all...my appetite seems in check. I lost twenty pounds and have almost effortlessly kept it off. New information to me however, was the idea of exercising every day. While losing weight, I exercised three days at the gym and did light walking on the two alternate days. Lately, I have only been going to the gym, three days a week, but might bump it up to four. I do not eat as much dairly as suggested in the book, but I'm considering increasing my consumption per the author's suggestion. I'm not sure if daily exercise is needed and would be concerned that some people might become dismayed/over tired if they worked that hard. My own doctor suggested that a good workout at the gym four times a week is sufficient.

As a side note: some of the things I have been doing mentioned in the book include: a calcium supplement multiple times a day, I drink mineral water often, I eat a lot of salad with very low fat dressing, I keep my fruit intake to a minimum, I eat a lot of vegetables, I don't eat bread or similar complex carbs, I eat good quality protein at most meals. Like I mentioned above, one major difference in my case is that I don't exercise daily, but I exercise regularly and burn as many calories as possible in the time I've set aside to do so.

I should add that since buying How the Rich Get Thin....I have lost two additional pounds. This was just from making a few minor changes in my eating routine, based on the author's advice. I also found her to be very motivating and uplifting.

Bottom line: This is an excellent book with solid information that just might inspire you...and that's a large part of the battle right there.

I love this book. So many books like this lead into pages that all say the same thing only to later lead into pages of medical jargon. This book doesn't patronize you but thoroughly breaks down the ways to create a healthier lifestyle, not "diet". There are no cheesy cheerleader chapters which I hate or pages of testimonials. The author is a doctor/nutritionist. It also point blank tells you what to expect and a no-nonsense approach to reaching your goal. Well written, simple enough but so enjoyable to read. I don't know why but this book makes me want to get healthy and I learned new things on nutrition by the end of the first chapter.

Book was kind of dingy looking -- Like it had been sitting in a shelf for some time.

This is a 'way of life' eating instruction book that is easy to understand and doable for today's fast paced schedules. Most of us know that different types of foods trigger weight gain and water retention and other foods help with lowering cholesteral and assist with achieving the recommended vitamin and mineral intake. Jana explains all of this in language that anyone can understand, grasp and follow. Can't wait to get started.

I got this book after seeing the author on Martha Stewart. For me it was very informative on how the body & hunger works. The information on the need for protein at every meal finally made me understand why I was often so hungry when I would try to "eat healthy" before. Protein is a must - I also like her info on calcium and how it can aid in weight loss (I am a dairy lover). Though I have not followed the book's menu religiously, I still have been able to loose and keep off several pounds. This book works for me and is an easy read.

This is a book about getting healthy, eating and exercising right. Sex has no business in this book. A diet doctor promoting this, makes me wonder and the book has lost it's credibility.

I've read a lot of books written by doctors and this is the first doctor written book, that's using "sex" to sell a diet book. Makes no sense at all.

I'm so excited about this book. After 2 years of working out consistently and HARD and still having a big wad of bread dough on the front of my abdomen, I am so excited to finally be losing it!! Dr. Klauer's high calcium diet is amazing. My waist is becoming defined and my size eight pants are becoming loose! I'm a public school employee, so I can't follow the diet exactly (no wild salmon or wild arctic char for lunch, very little organic produce), but I can modify it enough on a modest budget to make it work. After having two babies, I'm leaner than I've been in years with minimal effort. I'm not even working out as hard as I was previously. Love it!

This is not a get thin quick scheme so if that is what you are looking for... this isn't your book.

I've been doing weight watchers for 5 years now and have been on a plateau for some time (due to my own laziness). I have incorporated this book into my weight watchers routine and I am now losing weight again (about 1-2lbs a week) and, more importantly, I feel wonderful!

Oh, and her marinade for grill tuna is fantastic and easy.

I highly recommend this book, I've seen a nutritionist before and she basically gave the same info as Dr. Klauer. The important thing is to really to exercise, cut fat and sugar and measure your portions. Protein is essential for a balanced diet. The first week is the toughest but worth it.
