Sir Gideon Trevithic is returning to his estate in Cornwall after serving his country in India. He returns a hero but what he endured there has left him with serious physical and mental scars. He is haunted by nightmares brought on by his ordeal, suffering from insomnia and panic attacks in the proximity of people, unable to bear the company of others ,except for two trusted friends. He simply cannot tolerate any form of intimacy, not even that of a handshake. This tortured man has ample compassion however, so when he comes across a severely abused woman hiding in the stables, he insists on helping, though he realizes that her pitiable story is a fabrication.
Lady Charis Weston is running away from her two stepbrothers who threaten to rape her, after having beaten her beyond recognition in an attempt to make her accept the hand of a man of their choice, . She is England's wealthiest heiress who will come into her fortune on turning twenty one. If she marries before that time, her husband will control her money. She must therefore, remain in hiding for the next three weeks until her birthday. If her brothers find her, she'll be forced into matrimony and then conveniently disposed of once their goal is achieved. When she's offered a ride by this kind mysterious man, Charis accepts with relief and gratitude, although she must escape from him as well. She is aware that once he finds out her true identity he will have no option but to return her to her lawful guardians.
Gideon, is determined to offer sanctuary to this girl, no matter what the inconvenience to him. He takes her to his home which, despite its neglect, retains its grace and beauty, much like our broken hero, who remains noble and courageous. The heroine also acts with strength and resolve, agreeing to mary Gideon when she realizes it is the only sensible option. But she is not about to passively accept a marriage of convenience to a man who shirks at her mere touch. She has fallen in love with the strong, magnanimous man who at times seems vulnerable and fragile , his sanity hanging by a thread. Charis has fortitude, challenging this man's deep seated insecurities, patiently reawakening him to love, passion and trust.
It is an intensely emotional book, the hero and heroine remarkable in their courage yet they do posses human weaknesses which make them lifelike.Their characters are multilayered , parts of which are revealed as their love grows. The atmosphere is palpable, I felt as if I was watching a black and white movie like 'Jamaica Inn', so vivid are the descriptions of the landscape ,weather, the roads and cities. The suspense is intense as the stepbrothers are desperate and prepared to go to any lengths to get their hands on Charis' fortune. I absolutely loved it and wish that there were more writers who could write with such flair.
In this plot, Ms. Campbell presents a heroine who has escaped cruel treatment at the hands of her family. She's assumed somewhat of an alternate identity, although it's invented off the cuff when she's discovered by the hero, injured and in need of help. Yes, this is familiar to us as readers of romance. What's nice is that it's somehow entertainingly new.
Although I didn't find Ms. Campbell's usual use of powerful characters and plot devices to be as strong in this book, it still manages to be sweet and engaging. I should mention, in using the word "sweet," I don't mean a sweet, clean read. All of Ms. Campbell's love scenes are appropriately graphic in nature so if you, as a reader, value less detailed love scenes, keep that in mind. Still, I never find Ms. Campbell inappropriate or offensive in those scenes; however, I'm hard to offend.
What I did have minor difficulty with was the pace of the charade between the heroine and hero and what seemed to be a slightly rushed dramatic encounter with the heroine's family at the end of the book. I also personally prefer a stronger heroine and, since I'd read this book after reading more than one of Ms. Campbell's offerings that presented strong female leads, I was a tad disappointed. Still, I think the order in which I read her books, back to back (all very standalone), probably affected my opinion in this way. In its own right, this is a solid, entertaining, and well-written read for a rainy afternoon.
That Gideon after what he faced was still able to function is one miracle in itself, that he has limitations, is even more understandable but for Charis, he is even ready to go past them what ever the price if it means protecting her.
Charis is an incredible woman, life could have changer her in a bitter and distrusting young woman but she still has faith in it. She near instantly knows Gideon is a man she can trust, even if she had to taste him a bit at the beginning but never he failed her, not even when she hid who she was.
It is their incredible chemistry and attraction that will give her the strength to fight him for a future together while he wanted only to retire from life and let her go. She is not afraid to say her feelings nor to battle even if not fair to win him and the task is enormous as she has to face his own ghosts those which define him now. But slowly she will plant the seed of doubt and show him there are ways for them to be together.
It was also a very sensual read as they learn to know another, accepting the flaws of their souls and bodies as proof of the life they lived and survived.

Gideon wants to help 'Sarah.' He sees through her story, but doesn't want to push her. Instead he helps her get to Portsmouth, the place she's been trying to get to, although even Charis herself has no idea what she's going to do when she arrives.
During her time with Gideon, she opens up to him, but also is alarmed by some of his strange behaviour. He always wears gloves, and when she's attacked at Portsmouth harbour by some drunk sailors, she witnesses the brutality in his fight with them. Gideon also doesn't like anyone to touch him, and Charis cannot fathom why.
When he learns the truth about her, he suggests she return with him to his childhood home in Cornwall, and hide until she reaches her 21st birthday, three weeks away, and only then will she be safe, as she will claim her inheritance and not be under her stepbrothers control.
Gideon is a troubled man. He went to work as a spy in India, returning as a broken man, physically and emotionally. Only his two friends from India who returned with him, Tulliver and Akash, know the truth. But during her time with Gideon in his home, she has found herself falling in love with him, and goes out of her way to find her way into his heart. Gideon cares for Charis very deeply, but believes he can never have a real relationship with anyone, let alone Charis.
When Gideon finds Hubert and Felix at his door, he sees for himself the kind of men they are. He knows he must go out of his way to save her. They stage it so it appears he and Charis are on their way to Gretna Green to get married, knowing Hubert and Felix will follow, but they actually sneak on a boat to Jersey. Gideon marries her, but tells her it's a marriage in name only, upsetting Charis. Once he's bedded her, they will live separate lives.
Gideon fights his inner demons and beds her, but it's not the loving either of them wanted. Charis goes out of her way to break through Gideon and save him, just like he's saved her.
Overall, the book was amazing. This is only the second book I've read by this author, and I didn't think it was possible to find a better book than her last, but it was. I absolutely love Gideon. He reminds me a lot of Sydnam Butler from Simply Love by Mary Balogh, another story by a broken man, but I think this one was that little bit better. Charis' love for her man shone throughout the story, and she puts herself on the line to prove it, even letting him have his way, just to get him to trust her.
I only wish the story didn't end.
5/5
Whatever else Gideon may be or have been though, he still remembers the rules of gentlemanly behaviour, and refuses to let this frightened girl run off into the night alone. No matter how many times she lies to him. Yet as they journey on together - one hiding her identity, the other his demons - something grows between them. Even if Charis is the only one to acknowledge it, as the longer she spends around the beautiful Sir Gideon, the more determined she is to save him - for his own sake, as well as hers.
But how can they possibly find happiness when he cannot bear to be touched? And how can he save her from being hurt, by her stepbrothers or himself, when he simply cannot let her go?
No one writes damaged characters quite like Anna Campbell, and still manage to create a beautiful romance. Gideon is a truly broken hero, suffering from PTSD after a horrific ordeal, made even worse by his strong protective instincts. His demons are real, and Campbell conveys his struggles with compassion and skill.
Rather than giving him a sympathetic heroine who can lovingly nurse him back to life, though, he gets Charis. A stubborn, headstrong hoyden. Yes, at times her actions are spoiled and verge on selfish, but her ferocious desire to get what she wants makes her perfect for Gideon. She wants him, whole and in all ways, and refuses to let him wallow in the shadows. She is no passive, sympathetic chit waiting for the world to make things right. No, things are never easy for them, but their willingness to fight make their successes all the sweeter.
There are no surprises in this story, and there is a sad lack of depth in the supporting characters - her brothers in particular are cardboard villains. (Although a throwaway comment about Akash left me wanting to read his story... hopefully next?) Still, the intensity and passion in the main romance doesn't disappoint. Campbell always delivers, and if you liked Untouched , this one is for you. (Similarly, if you haven't read Untouched but you liked this... what are you waiting for?)
