This short story begins with rancher (and former Texas Ranger) Colt Severson sitting in a saloon, staring down the barrel of a rifle being held by his new bride, Annalee Sapp. There's been a little `confusion' about the circumstances leading up to their hurried nuptials, but this gets resolved pretty quickly and off they go to the hotel to enjoy their wedding night. That about sums it up.
I didn't care for this, but I'm willing to take some responsibility for that. I do read the occasional HQN romance, but I'm not familiar with all their various romance lines. This is published under `Harlequin Historical Undone', and apparently they're all novella length stories with `sensuous' storylines. `Sensuous' in this case being a code word for not much of a plot and a couple of sex scenes written in a coy, flowery prose. Here's an excerpt (location 721 on kindle):
"Their earlier actions had been enjoyable, satisfying, but nothing in comparison to the heights she found in this time-warping merger. It was as if they became one with the universe. They journeyed upward, united together, and dancing to the gripping melody filling her soul until, with a shattering blast, she exploded into a million pieces. His body stiffened, and with a rumble of satisfaction, he filled her with a colossal rush of completion. She clung to him, accepting the beautiful, precious gift".
Time-warping? Shattering blast? Rumble? Universe? This is either a space shuttle launch or these two are having sex. I'm leaning towards option B (sex), since the words "throbbing manhood" and "manhood" are used a few times and that's not standard NASA protocol.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Erotic Romance but this type of euphemistic style just doesn't appeal to me. I don't mean this as an insult to the author, as it may very well be a requirement of this particular HQN line and this buyer didn't do her homework. Note to self: No more HQN Undone. Ever.
On a positive note, I did read another book by this author that I really enjoyed and would highly recommend -
