The Time Pirate: A Nick McIver Time Adventure (Nick McIver Time Adventures) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 127 ratings

A thrilling sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller Nick of Time, in which the young time traveler Nick McIver must prove his courage once more, on two fronts: in World War Two-era England, where Nazis have invaded his homeland, and in America during the Revolution, where Nick stands shoulder to shoulder with General George Washington

It's 1940 and the Nazis are invading Nick's beloved home, the British Channel Islands. So Nick takes to the skies: He has discovered an old World War One fighter plane in an abandoned barn. Determined to learn to fly, he is soon risking life and limb to photograph armed German minelayers and patrol boats, and executing incredibly perilous bombing raids over Nazi airfields by night.

Meanwhile, the evil pirate, Captain Billy Blood, still desperate to acquire Nick's time machine, returns to Greybeard Island. He kidnaps Nick's sister, Kate, and transports her back to Port Royal, Jamaica, in the year 1781, leaving Nick a message that if he wants to see her alive again, he must come to Jamaica and make an even swap: Kate's life in exchange for Nick's wondrous time machine--that's Blood's bargain.

Having traveled back in time, Nick discovers a plot that might change the outcome of the American Revolution. Disguised as an eighteenth-century cabin boy, he travels to the Caribbean and confronts his old enemy, who has assembled the world's largest pirate armada.

From the battlefields of the New World to the brutal German occupation of English soil in World War Two, Ted Bell's
The Time Pirate has Nick McIver fighting once again to defend his country, the outcome of two wars resting on his young shoulders.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5–8—This installment in the series finds 12-year-old Nick once again saving the world on several fronts. It's 1939, and he must defend his home, a small British island, against the looming Nazi invasion. But the Nazis are not his only enemies; using a time-travel device invented by da Vinci, he also battles 18th-century pirates who've kidnapped his sister. In a further wrinkle, the pirates, who are equipped with a time-travel device of their own, threaten to change the outcome of the American Revolution. Nick feels compelled to help General Washington and his troops, even though doing so makes him a traitor, because he knows that the support of the United States will become crucial to the Allies in World War II. Swashbuckling action sequences and scenes of derring-do abound. However, hackneyed language detracts from the action, and clichéd stereotypes of Native Americans and African-American slaves make this title seem out of place in contemporary children's literature.—Hayden Bass, Seattle Public Library, WA

From Booklist

Bell continues the heavily promoted Nick McIver Adventures through Time series with this sequel to Nick of Time (2008), that begins in 1940. As the Channel Islands brace for the coming German invasion, 12-year-old Nick’s sister is kidnapped by a time-traveling pirate, and Nick’s pursuit turns the plot back to colonial America, where the Revolutionary War is brewing. Readers will need to check their plausibility meter from the start of this rip-roaring time-warp tale. An unnecessary prologue, confusing dream scenes, and excessive nautical details may deter some, but the breakneck pacing and wild plot will keep readers hanging on to the end. Grades 5-8. --Lynn Rutan

Overkill, my 10th spy thriller in the celebrated Lord Alexander Hawke series (HarperCollins) was published on May 1, 2018. It is on the New York Times Bestseller list at #14. I am currently working in the 11th Alex Hawke novel. Stay tuned for updates and the pub date.

In Overkill, Hawke’s limits are tested in a do-or-die showdown with his erstwhile friend, now lethal enemy, Vladimir Putin. In a battle that spans the globe from Siberia to Switzerland, from L.A. to London, from the Bahamas to Bermuda, Hawke races to find and rescue his young son, Alexei, who mysteriously disappears in a horrific Christmas Day ski gondola accident in St. Moritz. All the while engaging Putin in a Battle Royale to prevent the unstable Russian president from realizing his “Goldfinger” dreams of an armed invasion of Switzerland. This, by way of stealing all the gold buried in the Swiss Alps to finance his dreams or returning to power atop the Kremlin!

Along the way, Hawke encounters a man who will forever redefine what it means to be a villain in an

Alex Hawke spy thriller. A man named Mr. Smith, who, if looks could kill, resembles no one so much as the late actor Sam Shepard. The resemblance stops there. Smith, a former rodeo star out of West Texas, has a checkered past. After serving two tours in Afghanistan as an Army Ranger out of Ft. Bragg, the winner of two Silver Stars is recruited by CIA and posted to Berlin as a political assassin. There he marries a Russian woman whose death under mysterious circumstances results in Smith’s abrupt departure from the Agency—the circumstances involve decapitation. And, he tells the presiding judge, “It wasn’t any crime of passion your honor. I’ve been wanting to kill me a woman ever since I can remember.” This then, is the psychopath Putin hires sics on Hawke, and prevent him from interfering in any way with his dreams of glory. Mr. Smith will be haunting your nightmares long after you close the book on him…

I have always had an itch to travel the world—after graduating college and a brief but dull desk job in the family bank, I moved to Europe to become a writer and bounced around Italy and France, and Rome, where I was cast as a Cinecitta Cowboy in a spaghetti western that was ultimately never made. Eventually I made it back to the States and New York, starting a career in advertising, hitting my pinnacle as Vice-Chairman of the Board and World-Wide Creative Director of Young & Rubicam, one of the world's largest advertising agencies. But a call to become a writer, borne in the third grade when I was 8 years old, had never waned. I left my 'Madman' career in 2001, trading New York for Palm Beach, where I focused on writing fiction. Two years later I published my debut espionage thriller, Hawke. Since then, nine books in the series have landed on the bestseller list, not to mention my two New York Times Bestselling young adult adventure novels Nick of Time and The Time Pirate (St. Martin's Press).

I fill my very cinematic thrillers with realistic details and infuses my characters with a panache and humor. My extensive global travels have given me a perspective that I alone can provide readers. In 2011, I was elected a Visiting Scholar at Cambridge University, UK, completing my studies at Cambridge's Department of political science and International Studies (POLIS). I was also elected to the position of Writer-In-Residence, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge University—a setting known for its connections to Intelligence community, including my sponsor, Sir Richard Dearlove, Master at Pembroke College and former Chief of Secret Intelligence Service, better known as MI6.

In addition to my time in the UK, I have spent time in Russia researching my novels; despite almost being “disappeared” while waiting for a flight in the first-class lounge in the Moscow airport. But setting and characterization aren’t the only strengths of the Hawke series—I am exhaustive in my research and goal to provide realistic military details for my readers.

Time Pirate, Ted Bell's new Young Adult novel and sequel to Nick of Time, comes back full steam ahead with a rip-roaring action packed adventure story for boys and men of all ages! 464 pages of non-stop thrills and chills that will have you on the edge of your seat from page one to the end.

Time Pirate picks up right where Bell left us at the end of Nick of Time, on the island of Greybeard in the British Channel Islands, with 12 year old Nick McIver getting ready for the inevitable coming war. The year is 1940 and as we start out this installment, the Nazis are slowly approaching and inching their way to invading the islands. Nick McIver's friend Winston Churchill is doing his best to forestall the onslaught, but the powers that be have British troops retreating leaving the islands demilitarized and abandoned to fight for their lives on their own.

This story is pretty complex and involves many paralleled events that put Nick McIver and his friends Gunner, Lord Hawke, Commander Hobbes and his adorable little sister Katie, in quite the tailspin as they once again risk their lives for home and country. One day Nick uncovers his father's old WWI fighter plane, a dilapidated old Sopwith Camel. With the help of Gunner, the islands Inn owner, they rebuild and rejuvenate the old plane to it's original glory. After Nick presents his father with his old war prize, Angus McIver teaches his son to fly it himself just in time to do some real live spying and reconnaissance work for Churchill as his daily flights take secret mission photographs of the enemy. Death defying barnstorming scenes with Nick in the air shooting at Nazi's, and German parachuters sailing onto home grounds, have Gunner and Nick realizing it's time to fight. Together with the help of weapons specialist Hobbes, they create apple size bombs that allow our young hero to teach the enemy a few lessons.

But that's not all that's in store for Nick McIver. His old arch enemy, the evil pirate of the Caribbean, Billy Blood, is out for revenge after Nick sliced of his hand and comes to kidnap his sister and bring her back to 1781. Billy Blood wants the second time travel orb that Nick has in possession and uses Katie as bait to get Nick to travel back to the high seas to get his sister back in trade for Leonardo Da Vinci's time machine. And while we the readers witness more high seas battles of wit with cannons firing and pirates dueling, Nick uncovers Billy's secret mission to band together 100 pirate ships that will attack and overtake an armada in the Americas. His plan involves another historical event that involves George Washington, and General Lafayette amidst the American Revolutionary War at Yorktown Virginia, the crucial battle that ends the winning war for America that sent the Redcoats packing! Masquerading as a British drummer Boy, Nick goes undercover surviving in the wilderness alone, killing indians and becomes a double spy for both England and America, helping George Washington win the war.

This is a superb action novel that never lets up. It is finely written with wonderful characters both good and bad, and reflects detailed historical research on the author's part that surely adds to the success of this series. When it comes to action and a hero destined for the classics, you can't beat Nick McIver and his Time Travel adventures. Time Pirate has you hearing the clang of Pirate swords, cannon fire exploding upon tall ships of the high seas, the sound of blunderbusses and flintlocks, cavalry horses stampeding, and droning airplanes complete with bombs and bullets flying as Nick McIver once again saves the day. Fabulous, absolutely positively fabulous!

THE TIME PIRATE, by Ted Bell, is the second installment in the Nick McIver Time Adventure series (the series has apparently been renamed between the first and second books). Our intrepid heroes, 12 year old Nick McIver, and his fearless little sister, Katie, are still having fascinating adventures and preserving the flow of history. And this time, loyal, duty-bound Nick must betray his country, his beloved England, in order to save it.

Like all young boys, Nick McIver wants to grow up to be hero like his father, a highly decorated WWI ace pilot. The values of loyalty, honor, and duty are part of Nick's very soul. Nazis have invaded his home, one of the British Channel Islands, and Nick knows that he must do whatever he can to protect his home, his family, his friends, and his country. To this end, Nick lovingly restores his father's old WWI Sopwith Camel biplane, takes flying lessons from his father, and conducts secret air raids on the neighboring Nazi compounds. Ever brave, Nick faces his fears and does his duty. But his duty comes on other fronts as well. As we learned in the first book, Nick is in possession of one of two time machines invented by Leonardo Di Vinci. The evil pirate captain, Billy Blood is in possession of the other. Blood plans to change history, by ensuring that the Americans lose their battle for independence. Nick realizes that if America never achieves independence, then she cannot come to the aid of Britain in 1940, and his country will be conquered by the Nazis. Nick must travel back to a critical turning point in the American Revolution and give aid to General Washington. But, to do so will be an act of betrayal against England. Can he do it? Can Nick live with the results of his choices? Can Nick alone defeat Billy Blood, and preserve the course of history?

THE TIME PIRATE starts off with a bang and plunges forward with excitement and adventure to the very end. Along the way, Nick meets a number of historical heroes, and he does his very best to do what he thinks is right. I love the values and morals of these books; they are filled with duty, honor, family, country, and politeness - all things I want my children to know. I also love that Nick and Katie's parents are alive, loving, and supportive, and that they form a strong family unit. His parents may not know everything Nick is doing, but they know enough, and while they worry, they understand his motives.

Although it is marketed to grades 5 through 8, THE TIME PIRATE is really for the adventurer in all of us. I wish I had had something like this when I was learning history; history might have "stuck" with me better. I definitely would have enjoyed it more. And I did some checking: while the story is fictional, the facts are not. THE TIME PIRATE is rich in details and history of the both wars- the American Revolution and WWII.

IMHO, THE TIME PIRATE does what most sequels fail to do; it not only equals the first book in the series, it surpasses it. THE TIME PIRATE is a grand mash up of the best of Horatio Hornblower and Harry Potter. I hope Ted Bell plans many more books.

Nick of time was excellent, i read it twice. this second one did not hold my interest as did the first one. seemed like Ted wanted to include George washington's character, and the plot was a little weak to me. I'm looking forward to Ted's next one, to see what he can come up with for Nick and his little sister Katy's new adventure. i also read Spy by Ted Bell, i think three times. it is so current with the technology and what is going on in the world, from border scenerios with a texas sheriff, to south american terrorist camps, to russian bombs, and remote control drones. He used alexander hawk, the hero in his adult series, in his books with the boy Nick. i thought that was cool.

This is a can't put down, read till wee hours, woke up very early to keep reading book for children. I first learned of Ted Bell's "The Time Pirate" from Glenn Back. After listening to an interview with Ted Bell, I immediately went to Amazon, purchased the book and mailed it to my 9 yr old Grandson, Jack. I received a telephone call from Jack 1 day after receiving The Time Pirate telling me that he had read 5 chapters and absolutely loved the book! Jack called me yesterday (4 days later) after soccer games, baseball games, school and homework to tell me that he had finished the book and hoped that I would send the next one! Jack has read every Magical Tree House and many more "series" books. I do hope that Ted Bell continues to write books for our children / grandchildren with his amazing ability to teach history so magically. We can't wait for his next book! TamieA
