Blood Vines: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 541 ratings

A California vineyard holds bloody secrets for a woman plagued by nightmares—and the detective determined to help her—in this chilling romantic thriller.

When Alexandra Clarkson starts having visions of terrifying ceremonies, she thinks her mind is playing tricks on her, resurrecting images from her academic research on religious rituals. But when her mother Patsy commits suicide, Alex wonders if she’s haunted by something from the childhood she doesn’t remember.

Detective Daniel Reed has some shocking revelations about Alex’s mother. Twenty-five years earlier, Patsy was married to Harlan Sommer, a Sonoma County vintner, when their infant son disappeared without a trace. The loss destroyed the Sommers’ marriage, causing Patsy to leave and take Alex with her.

When a baby’s remains were unearthed in a Sonoma vineyard, Reed picked up a trail that led him to Patsy in San Francisco. Now, as Reed and Alex return to Sonoma to investigate, they find themselves in the crosshairs of a twisted killer . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Bestseller Spindler's underwhelming stand-alone stars Alexandra Clarkson, a doctoral student finishing her thesis in human belief systems, who was raised in San Francisco by her unstable mother, Patsy, not knowing who her father was. When Patsy is found dead, Alexandra questions whether it was by her own hand or if it's linked to a years-old crime in nearby Sonoma County—the apparent kidnapping of baby Dylan Sommer, the son of Harlan Sommer, of the Sommer family wine dynasty, and, as Alex discovers, Harlan's then wife, her mother, Patsy. Keen to find out her father's identity, Alex relocates to wine country, where she learns about the repressed first five years of her own life. Despite the happy family reunion, not everyone is pleased with Alex's return to the area, so Spindler (Breakneck) stirs the pot with a few instances of ritual sacrifice and not-so-coincidental deaths. In the end, a tidy resolution substitutes for the mouth-dropping revelation many thriller fans will expect. (Mar.)

From Booklist

Alexandra Clarkson is suddenly haunted by frightening images of anonymous hooded people and a baby without a face. Daniel Reed, a police detective, believes that newly unearthed remains are those of a baby who was abducted 25 years ago. Alex discovers that her dying mother has been keeping secrets, and that Alex’s whole life might have been an illusion; then she finds out that she has a connection, not merely to Daniel Reed but also to the baby who disappeared all those years ago. All that in about 40 pages. Soon after, Spindler asks us to accept that Alex has entirely wiped from her memory a member of her own family, forgotten he ever existed. Despite its unnecessarily truncated opening (which makes its revelations seem silly, not suspenseful), and its general air of implausibility, the book does have some effective moments, and its story of family secrets and murder is not without interest. Still, this one is best recommended only to Spindler’s fans. --David Pitt

The main character is this book is Alexandra Owen Clarkson. She is a lady with no past or so she thinks. All of a sudden the world starts shifting around her, memories and realities are mixed in together and soon many deaths follow. This takes place up in the beautiful county in which I live Sonoma County (wine country) California. This is a very good book and as usual, I was shocked at who was behind the events that took place in this novel.

Just want to say that I was so pleased with Blood Vines. It was magnificent!!! I was mesmerized. Erica is a fabulous story teller. I could not put the book down. This is like Erica's older books that were so great!!! She is an awesome writer!!

This book was a quick and easy read. I wasn't sure if I figured this one out until the very end. Nice edge of your seat read especially for vacation. I had the main suspect pegged but I wasn't sure how the other characters played into the crimes. Therefore, I went back and forth about some of the secondary suspects. I would however, liked more information and clarification on the use of the chopsticks (trying not to give too much away). I can't wait for Spindler's next book!!!

Spine tingling in places, this novel centres on a 25y old mystery of the disappearance of baby Dylan at a Sonoma, California winery. After his disappearance, his parents marriage dissolves and his mother runs away to San Francisco with her 5y old daughter, Alex from a previous relationship. Bringing Alex up on her own, she removes all evidence of their former life. Alex however, suffers from disturbing nightmares of sinister men in robes and naked writhing bodies in a dark candlelit place and wonders if these hark back to something from her childhood. When the body of a baby is found in an old vineyard and Alex's mother commits suicide Alex discovers her connection with Dylan and moves to Sonoma to find out more about her family.

Erica Spindler writes blood chilling scenes very well indeed. The novel is a fast ride through the light that is Sonoma wine country to the darkness hiding in some of the old wine families. Although this is the first book I have read by Erica Spindler, but won't be the last.

This is my first book from this author and it was okay to good. Plot was suspenseful but unrealistic. There were way too many characters to remember, had to occasionally go back and look up who was who again and which family they belonged to, but overall an okay read.

One of Erica's best books. Never a dull moment. Even if you guess the villain you have to read the rest of the story...and it doesn't necessarily end the way you think.

Bought this on a whim. Author was completely unknown to me. Excellent, excellent, excellent book! I cannot say enough about it. I was on the edge of my seat right up to the ending. Author and narrator provide a detailed vision of all characters. I felt as though I was solving the mystery myself! This is a definite must-read!!

I like Erica Spindler novels, they are always well written, exciting, have a great plot and are filled with wonderful characters. But Blood Vines is even better than her other books. Without wanting to spoil the plot in anyway, the story evolves around a wonderful character, who is involved in murder, pagan rites and the most well written mystery I have read in a long time.

If you want a superb thriller this is the one to buy.

This is the third Erica Spindler book that I have read and needed to sit and read what was going to happen next. The twists and turns are superb but there is a similar pattern that runs through all the books - a single woman with emotional problems, an unharmonious family background and a wonderful man to fall in love with. I loved it!

One of the best books I have read recently. It is set in Californian wine country, which I knew nothing about, and made a change for me. The characters are well written and believable. I sympathised with the heroine, and was mentally urging on onwards to find her answers to the bad dreams she was experiencing. All in all a good read, and I will be starting another one by this author tonight.
