The Power of the Texas Governor: Connally to Bush Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

George W. Bush called it "the best job in the world," yet many would argue that the Texas governorship is a weak office. Given few enumerated powers by the Texas Constitution, the governor must build a successful relationship with the state legislature—sometimes led by a powerful lieutenant governor or speaker of the opposing party—to advance his or her policy agenda. Yet despite the limitations on the office and the power of the legislative branch, many governors have had a significant impact on major aspects of Texas's public life—government, economic development, education, and insurance reform among them. How do Texas governors gain the power to govern effectively?

The Power of the Texas Governor takes a fresh look at the state's chief executives, from John Connally to George W. Bush, to discover how various governors have overcome the institutional limitations of the office. Delving into the governors' election campaigns and successes and failures in office, Brian McCall makes a convincing case that the strength of a governor's personality—in particular, his or her highly developed social skills—can translate into real political power. He shows, for example, how governors such as Ann Richards and George W. Bush forged personal relationships with individual legislators to achieve their policy goals. Filled with revealing insights and anecdotes from key players in each administration, The Power of the Texas Governor offers new perspectives on leadership and valuable lessons on the use of power.

This book gives an overview of the Governors that held the office in the modern era. It gives insight into their general personalities. Well written and extremely well researched.

A very informative, but easy to read examination of the Texas Governorship. I have not come by another work that so perfectly explores the topic. You can tell that this book was written by a Texan for Texans. I especially liked the last few chapters that talked about Governor Richards and Governor Bush. They were two legendary characters with there own styles and personas, but both embodied what Texans expect to see in their highest elected office. I bought it for a college research paper, but I read it for its entertaining insights.

The book title and summary suggests it is a study of the power wielded by the Governor of Texas from 1960-2000, but in reality is merely a synopsis of the careers of each Governor of that period, with a 10-20 page chapter each.

Great insights into how to be a great Texas governor and how to get things done in Austin. This should be required reading for all Texas history classes and political science class so that Texas students have a better appreciation for the levers of Texas power and progress. Well written and concise. I was highlighting left and right.

This is a review by Lloyd Criss. Lloyd Criss is the author of Rough & Tumble Texas Political Combat and a former Texas Legislator.
The Power of the Texas Governor by Brian McCall very accurately describes the strengths and weaknesses of every Texas Governor from John Connally to George W. Bush. It is the best book I have read about the people who occupied the state's top political office and the campaigns that brought them to power.
McCall's research and information is right on target. All of the important details are provided. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about that period of Texas history.
