The Bachelorette Party: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 227 ratings

After being left at the altar by her soap star fiancé, Los Angeles high school teacher Zadie Roberts wants nothing more to do with love and romance. With the help of her best buddy Grey and several bottles of wine, she just might survive the trauma of the wedding that wasn't. Unexpectedly, Grey gets engaged to Zadie's prim and proper cousin Helen, and suddenly Zadie is dragged back into wedding festivity hell. The coup de grace is Helen's bachelorette party, thrown by her clique of prissy friends and certain to be a day of torture. But when the Pinot Grigiot goes down and the sweater sets come off, things get out of control. Helen turns into a girl gone wild and manages to get herself into a situation that just might sink the happy couple for good. Zadie faces a major debacle: should she tell Grey about Helen's night of indiscretion, or forever hold her peace?

The Bachelorette Party is a remarkable, assured debut. Lutz's terrific characters and sharp insights put this delightful novel a step above the rest.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

It should come as no surprise that the coauthor of the movie Legally Blonde has penned an equally hilarious, female-bondingâ€"inspired romp. Zadie Roberts is an attractive high school teacher who finds herself fantasizing about the young Abercrombie model in her English class as the rest of her friends pair off in grown-up relationships and get hitched. Not that she's against monogamy - her soap opera star fiancee; recently abandoned her at the altar, leaving her a little bit bitter and a lot horny. When she learns her best friend, Grey, is getting engaged to her perfect, prudish cousin Helen, Zadie thinks the world as she knows it might truly have ended. To make matters worse, Zadie must attend Helen's bachelorette party, complete with tea, yoga and the type of "dull women who have two-hour conversations about the contents of their children's diapers." But then the party takes a naughty turn, and chaste and virtuous Helen sets out to prove that she isn't the "uptight" girl everyone thinks she is. When all is said and done, Zadie must decide if her loyalties lie with her cousin or her best friend. Will she save Grey from a future of unhappiness or simply ruin their friendship forever? Laugh-out-loud funny with a nasty edge, this is chick lit for mean girls. (Feb)

From Booklist

Zadie Roberts was literally left standing at the altar by her now famous soap-star fiance. Even though it was more than six months ago, the last thing she wanted was to be associated with anything bridal. So, when her best friend, Grey, announces that he is engaged to Zadie's conservative and beautiful cousin, Helen, Zadie's life hits a new low--he wants Zadie to get Helen to loosen up a little at the bachelorette party. Not even sure if the prim and proper Helen knows how to have fun, Zadie reluctantly promises to show her a good time. But when the posh, sedate party goes off track and Helen throws her good-girl image out the window for a night of drinking, debauchery, and maybe even one last fling, Zadie is sure this wasn't what Grey had in mind and is torn as to what to tell him about Helen's behavior. Don't look for more than an easy read, mindless fun, and proof that women can be just as raunchy as men. Carolyn Kubisz

This book reads like a book for guys would, and the way a bachelor party can go very, very wrong, only for girls, which you have to admit is pretty original. I'm talking about openly mentioning women's sex lives, and hidden or forbidden desires, while remaining light and funny - and especially outrageous!
As the hen party progresses into the night and gets more and more out of control,
I kept on thinking as I read : "no... she (the author) won't dare to... it would be too much".But then she did, and pulled it off. I gaped and went on.
The final twist is not entirely in line with the previous parts, but it doesn't spoil the story, either. It's a great book, although I can imagine some readers may be a little shocked.

"The Bachelorette Party" is one of the most hysterical novels to come along in awhile. Starting out slow, it builds momentum once the actual bachelorette festivities get into high gear. And once the cocktails start flowing, you won't be able to put the book down!

Zadie is fresh from getting left at the altar by her soap star on the rise fiance, she has sworn off men. Well, except for Trevor, the nubile 19 year old model that is in her sixth period class, whom she fantasizes about.

Best friend Grey is a successful entertainment lawyer. They do just about everything together; she even introduced him to his fiance - her cousin, Helen. Helen is perfect, and professes at 28 to still be a virgin. Much to Zadie's consternation, she is suddenly stuck in wedding party hell for the cousin she despises, and already mourning the loss of her best friend. Grey is even trying to hook Zadie up with his best friend Mike.

Helen and Zadie have never been friends. Helen is judgmental and condescending, and apparently pretty conceited. Of course, underneath all that is a lot of insecurity, particularly and underlying jealousy of the friendship that Zadie and Grey share.

Grey asks her to make sure Helen has a good time at her bachelorette party. Not an easy task for Zadie, since the agenda is chock full of the most boring crap in the world. And then come the cocktails. Helen proves the old adage that a little alcohol can go a long way. She gets plastered, and really lets loose. From a rooftop bar and some seedy nightclubs, to a gay strip club and porn store, Helen manages to shock even Zadie with her behavior.

With the help of Helen's former college roommate, Zadie learns a lot about Helen. When she finds Helen in some compromising situations, she is torn as to whether to tell Grey that the woman he is marrying is not the innocent she is portraying herself to be, all the while kicking herself for giving into her own temptations.

Will she tell Grey or will Helen fess up to her misdeeds? Will Grey dump Helen? Will the wedding from hell go on as scheduled? Will Zadie succumb to her passion for young Trevor? You have to wait until the end to find out.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was easy to read and hard to put down. I was reminded of many of the bachelorette parties I had gone to in the past. It was funny, a bit raunchy but fun to read.

I absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED this book!! I couldn't put it down once I started reading it -- meaning, i sat at my desk for 2 days straight reading it and was caught quite a few times as I laughed out loud at the madness and inappropriate comments made in this book! McCullah Lutz did a fantastic job of showing what some women really feel when things just aren't going right in life. I could relate to this book on many levels, and at the same time, rely on it for a quick pick me up!

I HIGHLY recommend this book for any woman looking for a hilarious & feel-good read!!

I could identify and appreciate each individual scenario and the author's sarcasm and quick witted humor kept a smile on my face the entire time! This is a must read for a fun girl with fun girlfriends!

The Bachelorette Party was hysterical. It lacked a little in the beginning but still entertaining. Once I got past the first few chapters I was hooked. My bachelorette party is in a month and the title is what caught my eye and upon reading the other reviews I purchased it. A little raunchy in spots so if you are easily offended I wouldn't recommend but other then that it is worth the read. It's light, funny and you will find that within your own circle of friends and family, you can relate to the main character. Enjoy!

This book started out strong and I liked the jaded, sometimes crass observations of the main character. And then, toward the end, she does something that is just...I can't with it. Very disappointing to get that far and lose all respect for a character.

I got this book from the library at least 3 times before I finally got a copy for myself. It's a fun, light-hearted story with enough surprises thrown in to keep me reading "just one more chapter..." and I loved every page of it. As for the Abercrombie and Fitch model I can't help but think of Travis Fimmel and positively swoon!

from the co-writer of legally blonde and 10 things i hate about you. you can see the similarities between all the writing. this one is a mix of bachelor party, my best friends wedding and the graduate. some funny moments involving sex toys, 19 year old students and a hen nite. maybe just not enough dirty moments for me but still had you turning the pages.
