From Publishers Weekly

Sylvia Celeste Shoemaker was born into what she describes as a 300-year psychic family legacy. Inheriting her gifts directly from her Grandmother Ada, her psychic abilities would lead to best selling books, including The Other Side and Back, numerous tapings of The Montel Williams Show and Larry King Live, and even a guest appearance on The Young and The Restless. With humor, candor, and clarity, Shoemaker, founder of the Novus Spiritus Gnostic Christian Church, shares everything from doppelgängers to past lives. Even non-believers may find her life surprisingly traditional; after ending an abusive first marriage, she grounded herself in family, the study of theology and psychology, teaching, and raising her two sons. Her zest and passion for life in this world and beyond is evident on every page and photos of Browne with her family and friends like actress Shirley MacLaine accentuate her rich, unusual journey.

From Booklist

Browne, a household name in the psychic world, has published so many books, it’s hard to believe that she has anything left to write about. In this breezy autobiography, however, she focuses more on this world than she has in previous accounts, even those touching on personal matters. (Fans shouldn’t despair; there are still plenty of accounts from the other side.) Writing in an engagingly wry tone, Browne shows that, despite being psychic, she has trouble reading the signs when it comes to her personal life. Her relationship with her mother was hostile, and several of her marriages were disasters. She was not even in tune enough to know when her finances were being manipulated. (Psychics, she notes, cannot read for themselves.) Still, with spirit guidance, Browne has forged ahead and wants you to know that you can do the same. The book is sprinkled with advice: there is no such thing as a soul mate, so stop looking for one; reincarnation is real; love is all. Browne’s many fans may have heard all this before, but they probably won’t mind another installment. --Ilene Cooper

Get ready. If you follow numerology, I am a double "1" and a sun sign Scorpio -- I feel compelled to say what think. I have my moon and ascendant in Libra, so I believe in being nothing less than fair. Uranus conjuncts my ascendant -- so I really like the paranormal, what can I say? And finally, both of my parents are Geminis -- I have been trained to go on quite a bit when I write.

Here it comes ... and I truly don't care what kind of comments I get ... I've got Pluto, the god of the underworld on my side ... (-;

FACT: This is a wonderful book, and it is well worth the price of admission to get a glimpse into this woman's very personal life. Buy the book -- you won't regret it.

You know, I see so many reviews all over Amazon where people whine and complain about petty little things in books, "I wish it had been this way, I wish it had been that way".

It is very, very hard to write a book, much less a memoir. It is extremely difficult to look for the key to one's life in the dark, rather than under the lamppost, and then to put it all out there for everybody to read (and viciously pick apart). Of course, many people can blab on and on about "My ex did this to me, my friend did that to me" -- just look at a random blog -- but make it interesting, poignant, funny, and educational? No, not just anyone can do that ... but Sylvia Browne and Lindsay Harrison can, and DID.

This is a brave book. I got to know Sylvia by reading this and, you know what? This woman is full of wisdom and practical advice. This book inspired me to be a better person and a better mom. What more could you ask from a memoir? Not to mention that this book is also laugh-out-loud funny at times, too. Sylvia has an excellent sense of humor.

"But you're not talking about the psychic stuff!" I can hear all the Geminis and Virgos saying. "She's a fake, talk about that!" I hear the Tauruses muttering. "Your review is too long, get to the ghosts already!" the Sagittarians are yelling (yeah, yeah ... whatever). That's because you don't have to believe in anything paranormal whatsoever to enjoy this book. That's right -- this book stands on its own merits ... no belief in psychics is required.

I'm not going to go into any analysis of any of the paranormal topics in the book. As Sylvia says, "Take what you want, and leave the rest". I did enjoy those parts of the book, but they were not central for me; they were just a nice added plus to the narrative, as I enjoy reading about her work.

Here is what I am going to go into: I want people to stop calling Sylvia evil. Take a look into her eyes in her photos. There is no evil there (as an FYI to those who may not be aware, you can see evil in people's eyes ... look into the eyes of the latest murderer posted on Foxnews -- you'll see the evil if you look).

I also want people to stop calling her greedy because she wrote this book. Do you honestly think people make a lot of money from writing books? Bestsellers make some money, but really ... you don't make all that much money unless you are Dean Koontz, Stephen King, etc. and even then, you have to keep cranking them out or your money evaporates. Sylvia probably won't make too much money from this book; she wrote it because it was time for the book to come into being; like any other creative project, its time had come. And also, so what if she charges $800 or whatever it is for her readings? In California, $800 is not even that much money (cost of living) and anyway, professionals charge money for their services. It's called doing business.

And finally, to those who call her a fraud ... yeah, she's been wrong before. So has my doctor -- last week, as a matter of fact. So has my stylist, tailor, choreographer, etc, etc. etc. every professional is wrong sometimes! We live in an imperfect world! No one is perfect ... and Sylvia has said that many times. People need to get over droning on and on about "she was wrong about the color of the Pope's socks in 1989" or whatever it is that gets people's panties in a bunch. Yes ... I know about the missing kid case, and the coal miners (both very sad events, by the way)... however, she was not trying to be malicious ... she was just wrong! It happens, folks. Get over it.

Anyway, I could go on and on, but I'll shut up now. Just buy the book --- you don't have to believe in psychics, all you have to do is read it with an open mind. You might just learn something ...

Sylvia has been a wonder to me for a few years now. I love her personality and once you listen to her you feel as if you are in her circle of friends. I've been to an appearance of hers and enjoyed it, but this book is like she's talking to a friend and catching up. Her sense of humor amuses me and her compassion for people astounds me. This book is very personal and enlightening to hear all that she has done and overcome. For me, it inspired me to try to react to life in as gracious way as she has.

For anyone who has read and enjoyed and also has been comforted and strengthened by Sylvia Brownes books, this autobiography is a must. It is moving, funny, and comes with a lot of interestning photos of Sylvia and her family. Although she has had a partly difficult life (as she can't forsee her own lifepath), she writes about mean, errant and foolish ex-husbands in a non-vindictive manner. This is applaudable, as she seems to have overcome a lot of potential bitterness. One problem about this memoir, a thing that repeats itself in most of her other books, is the habit of incessantly repeating herself. The same stories come back again and again (however differently phrased) and that is slightly irritating. Still, I reccomend this book, as the tone of the memoir is one of forgiveness and kindness. Sylvia does not dwell on old misfortunes, and her loving heart shines through at all times. Perhaps this is a book mostly for hard-core fans, but everyone can pick up a cue or two about the art of forgiving and moving on.

As a longtime admirer of Sylvia not just as a psychic but also as a woman who has triumphed over her fair share of life's lessons I highly recommend any book she has written or will write in the future. Sylvia gives us all a roadmap for our travels through this dark sometimes painful place we call home ( but as Sylvia will tell you our real home is on the other side.) She is always teaching, sometimes funny, always truthful and her memoirs "psychic: my life in two worlds" will leave the reader with the fact that no matter if you are psychic or not no one gets a free pass through this life. We all, even sylvia have our lessons to learn but sylvia makes those lessons enjoyable. No small feat!

This is a difficult one for me to review. The reason being, I just found some of the experiences she had ,difficult to believe. However, I found the book easy to read and I did want to read to the end and most of her book I enjoyed.

Perhaps I am being unfair as what she says she has experienced is so far from my own which admittedly is very limited in that regard.

I love the way Sylvia's books are written. Her words come precise, colorful, and to the point. She can create a mind picture and express her feelings of the situation and tell the story in just enough words. With all her higher education, she just tells it like she sees and feels it! She has brought to light what we have always wondered about on the other side and what we can expect after we are finished here on earth. She is very loving, caring, and brave. I Always look forward to her next book. Jan Woo

I am a great fan of Sylvia Browne, and I did enjoy this book. I like getting insight into other peoples worlds and her's is an amazing world and one I wish I could access, as it is fascinating. Many people feel they are in a position of judgement of another s life, instead of looking at it and enjoying it for what it is. Thank you Sylvia for an insight into your world.
