The Omega Diet: The Lifesaving Nutritional Program Based on the Diet of the Island of Crete Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 40 ratings

The medically proven diet that restores your body's essential nutritional balance

"Good fats"--essential fatty acids--influence every aspect of our being, from the beating of our hearts to our ability to learn to remember. There are two types of essential fatty acids (EFAs), omega-6 and omega-3. The problem with our modern diet is that it contains far more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3s. This hidden imbalance makes us more vulnerable to heart disease, cancer, obesity, autoimmmune diseases, allergies, diabetes, and depression.

The Omega Diet is a natural, time-tested diet that balances the essential fatty acids in your diet. It is packed with delicious food that contain the "good" fats, including real salad dressing, cheese, eggs, fish--even the occasional chocolate dessert--and an abundance of antioxidant-rich fruits, vegetables, and legumes.

The Omega Diet provides:

  • seven simple dietary guidelines for optimal physical and mental health
  • a concise guide to the foods you need to restore your body's nutritional balance
  • a diet plan that lets you eat fat as you lose fat
  • fifty delicious recipes that are quick and easy to prepare
  • a comprehensive three-week menu to help you get started

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Is it really possible that eating more fat is the key to better health? It depends on the fat, according to Dr. Artemis Simopoulos. The Omega Plan shows, in great detail, the difference between omega-3 fats, those found in fish and some green vegetables, and omega-6 fats, which are found in most meats and vegetable oils. The former have heart-protective and cancer-preventive properties; the latter, she writes, cause obesity, heart disease, cancer, depression, and a host of other ills. Omega-3 fats are at the heart of her plan, along with ample servings of fruits and vegetables. Unlike diets based on deprivation, Simopoulos offers some fairly lush food choices, including an ounce of cheese every day. Best of all, The Omega Plan is bursting with so much useful information about food shopping and preparation that you'll be able to use its advice the second you put the book down.

Review

Of all the diets this is the one most apt to make most Americans feel better, live longer and stay healthier. Dr. Simopoulos absolutely knows what she is talking about. The book is full of gems of dietary wisdom and practical advice. -- -Jean Carper, USA Weekend columnist and bestselling author of Miracle Cures, Stop Aging Now, and Food-Your Miracle Medicine.

"This is the most solidly-based nutritional program currently available. The information is easily understandable, not obscured by technical jargon. And the recipes produce dishes that actually taste good! The Omega Plan is a major step forward for readers concerned with their own health."'S. BOYD EATON, MD, author of The Paleolithic Prescription andclinical associate professor of radiology, Emory University School of Medicine"I'm not a betting woman, but if I were, I'd put my money on Dr. Artemis Simopoulos as most likely to be remembered as the great nutritional/geneticist breakthrough genius of our age. For those of us 'at sea' between the high carb diets that may point us toward overweight and diabetesand the high protein/high fat diets that may be anathema to our heartshere, at last, is good sense and great eating, based on serious science." --
BARBARA SEAMAN, author of The Doctor's Case Against the Pill, Co-founder, National Women's Health Network and Contributing Editor, Ms. magazine.

The Best Diet Book Ever Written! Ditch Seed Oils
I first read The Omega Diet 20 years ago. I have it on my Kindle and read it again every year to keep me on track. The author was born in 1933. She is still giving scientific lectures, mostly to science professionals, with words most of us never heard of. She is brilliant. Her principles are now catching on. Many of the current health gurus are exclaiming how bad seed oils are for you. Where have they been? Dr S told us 20 years ago.Her plan is not complicated. She gives you workable meal plans. Of course, once you know the principles, just add foods and recipes you like. Expand your palate.I wonder how many of the negative commenters will live healthfully and as brilliantly as she has. A full head of great hair, and look at her hands. No knots from arthritis. (YouTube has several of her lectures.)I am nearly her age. Most of my friends are younger and sick. They eat incorrectly snd refuse to make the effort while they trot off to the next dr appointment. . But I am not sick. I take a low dose thyroid pill I must take because of an issue I had at age 27. That’s all.I live independently, drive, cook all my meals from scratch, eating a healthful high plant, modest protein, balanced diet. No processed food.Recently someone proudly offered me a bottle of homemade sunflower oil. I refused it politely stating I could not include it in my diet. I would not touch that stuff. Seed oils should have a black box. They are killing Americans and they are hidden in everything. Just read labels. And I’ve almost stopped eating in restaurants because they use vegetable oil so freely.Give the Omega Diet a chance. You may be surprised at the health you will achieve. The picture is of her Flax Seed Honey Bead. So easy to make. I use it for breakfast with a no sugar Apple Sauce Raspberry spread. Delicious.Thank you Dr Artemis for dedicating your life to our good health and so generously sharing.By the way, her co-author has written a great book on food choices. Worth reading.

This is a great life-style diet. The book is easy to read, and has so much great information. The breakfast, lunch and dinner meal plans are 21 days in length, and meals are seldom repeated. The recipes are delicious and easy to prepare, with most under 30 minutes. Some of the best things about the diet are that you don't have to purchase a lot of exotic, expensive foods you won't use, there is no waste, shopping is easy, and grocery bills are likely to go down. Most of the ingredients are common, and substitutions are offered for the the less common ones. The ingredients are also used in the same way you would use ingredients normally. For example, leftover grilled chicken for dinner can be used for chicken salad for lunch the next day. This is a diet that starts with varied, delicious, easy to prepare meal plans and teaches you how to expand beyond prepared plans and learn a new way of delicious, healthy, low calorie, low cost eating.

I got this book on clearance for DH, who has just had a heart attack and really does not know much about what constitutes healthy eating. (He thinks it's all or nothing: he either can eat anything he wants and die or be deprived of everything and live. I'm trying to get him to educate himself so I don't have to deal with him balking over every little thing I put on the table!)

The first third of the book explains why the diet is good for you, gets into the Omega 3's and 6's and why balancing them is important, and provides food-choice recommendations. The rest of the book is recipes and an eating plan to get you started. This is not a difficult diet to follow; you can basically take the concepts behind it and eat what you want as long as you aren't eating the junk that got you in trouble in the first place. The Omega Diet fits in very well with the cardiologist's recommendations for lowering sodium and trans- and saturated fats.

This book is not going to magically make somebody who needs to exercise start doing it, but it helps a lot in the heart-healthy diet department. I'm going on the same diet, and already we both have lost a decent amount of weight without doing any exercise.

I read this book about 7 years ago and I still refer to it from time to time. It explains in detail how eating the wrong type of fats is harmful and the health benefits of eating the right ones. And it is backed by scientific studies. This book really helped me to improve my diet and cut out all the junk that I had been eating. Taking Omega-3 supplements is now part of my daily regimen and I know it helps because my mildly arthritic knees don't hurt as much and even my skin looks better! I have recommended this book to both family and friends. The title is a little misleading though, it sounds like all the other diet books out there but it's not; it is about eating a healthy diet and incorporating the right fats into it.

Disappointing. Fails to address the multiple dangers of Canola oil, which is key to the "Omega Diet"; and fails to properly emphasize the devastating role that sugar can play in our diets .

I am convinced that all American's eat way too many Omega 6 foods and not near enough Omega 3's. We need more fish, fish oils, nuts, seeds and foods that nature intended. Processed foods have been stripped of the good fats and most Americans eat a 20 to 1 ration of bad fats to good fats. If you can get that ratio to 4 to 1 or even better a 1 to 1 ratio you health will benefit greatly. This book will help you understand the science behind the Omega 3 diet and get you on track for a healthier diet.

I love how the author doesn't just spout off information, but follows up with scientific background, trials, etc. For me, I was already feeding my family much of what she suggests so I was glad for the confirmation I was on the right track. There is still quite a bit that I can still do to improve though. Thanks for the "heads up"!

Very good service from the seller, BUT unfortunately the book " The Omega Plan " is not worth the paper it is written on. You learn nothing from it.
