God Attachment: Why You Believe, Act, and Feel the Way You Do About God Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 161 ratings

God. Whether one loves him, hates him, denies or defies him, it is hard to deny the worldwide fascination with God. This book explores why and suggests a personal response to the God Attachment in all of us.

Why has the human race, the world over, been so fascinated with . . . some might say obsessed with . . . God? This built-in attachment to God crosses religious, political, ethnic, cultural, and generational barriers.

Drs. Clinton and Straub reveal fascinating research about this worldwide phenomenon. From avoidant, anxious, and fearful to secure and personal, the range of responses to our internal attachment to God has a profound influence on the way we do relationships, intimacy, and life choices.

With helpful self-assessments, intriguing questions, and surprising revelations, this book moves from worldwide statistics to personal challenge, offering the means to become securely attached to God in a way that can have positive effects on our attitudes, approach to life, and overall life satisfaction.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Clinton and Straub are Christian marriage and family therapists who use the Bible and an understanding of grace and wonder in the world to guide readers to a closer relationship with God. They identify four modes that Christians exhibit in relationships with each other and with God: security, avoidance, anxiety, or fear. The authors seek to guide readers through crises of faith and "spiritual rehab," suggesting that any addiction can keep a person from God. It can be something as serious as addiction to pornography, or any other "grand delusions" as innocuous as a fascination with one's career that takes a person's eye away from God. This book will appeal to Christian seekers or anyone facing roadblocks in their faith.

"This well written, enjoyable, and enriching book by Drs. Tim Clinton and Joshua Straub will not only help you recognize your natural longing for a deep relationship with God, but it will also show you how to achieve it. Great Read! Good information.

I have read many book on subjects similar to this, but this one seems to capture the essence better than any other so far. The first two chapters seem to start off slow until you realize the authors have set a sound foundation for the rest of the book's content to build on.

My only criticism is the suggestion made at the end of each chapter recommending a web site that amplifies the points made with video commentary by the books authors. I viewed all the videos and felt that they were not as good quality as the books pages, I felt they were a distraction. Stick to the books content and skip the videos.

I normally use a highlighter when reading a learning book like this.. however, I had to become much more selective than my normal highlighting style because each page was so powerful that I would have highlighted almost every other sentence! (Yes it really is that good!)

I highly recommend this book to everyone, those in healthy relationships and those with challenging ones. It really is insightful.

This relatively easy read is most profound. The authors balance teaching the role of attachment and its relationship to adults and to God with encouraging the reader to address some of the barriers to an intimate spiritual relationship. Throughout TH reader is given excellent knowledge of attachment theory and the practices needed to address wounds that prevents connecting with other and God.

This book is fantastic, but the authors continually mention videos to watch to accompany the chapters, but the videos are nowhere to be found. Unfortunate. But otherwise, the points they make are so helpful - things I have never thought about before. I read another book on attachment by Tim Clinton and another author. The two books complement one another beautifully.

For anyone who has questions on their purpose and seek to reconcile pain in life, this is your book. It's not a one sit read, but takes time to think about what it says and lots of soul searching. The authors are on point, candid and logical. It's a great step in the right direction.

God Attachment truly teaches you how humans attach in healthy and unhealthy ways. They don't leave it at that though. They also round things out by covering ways to become attached to God, and people, in healthy ways. The star rating is evidence of my opinion. I would recommend it for anyone; especially those who want to know more about themselves and God.
