4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 84 ratings

Forgiveness: The word itself fills our hearts with peace and hope; yet, countless Christians are plagued by haunting feelings of inadequacy and guilt. While their heads tell them they are forgiven, their hearts cry out that they are guilty.

This updated version of the previously published
Forgiven Forever gets right to the heart of the questions that steal the joy God intends for our lives: Where does guilt come from? Why can't I stop feeling guilty? Why can't I believe God will forgive me?

This is a book that, as a preacher of the Gospel, I have often bought copies for other people because 1) they needed to read it and 2) I am leery of loaning my copy out for fear I may not get it back. The previous title for this book was "Forgiven Forever." If you are looking for a sterile, clinical book about guilt, this is not it. If you are looking for a book that gives practical teaching about God's grace, Satan's use of our guilt to keep us from God's full use of our lives, and God's absolute forgiveness, then this is what you're looking for. Page 37, "God's purpose for guilt lies between the two extremes. He wants us to feel guilt and be motivated by it to act, but He doesn't want us debilitated by it."

Beam deals with how others will use your own guilt against you. This was the first book I read that told me that by holding on the guilt of past sin, I am in reality calling God a liar. The way Beam phrases it is, "Doubting salvation is doubting God" p. 182. God said He forgave ALL my sin, and here I am clinging to the guilt of sin already forgiven. This book literally changed the way I think. It is one my all-time favorites. If you are smart, pick it up and read it.

The explication of the amplitude between 'spiritually cripple' and 'spiritual psychopath' and evidence how sinners fall into the former is one of the best spiritual gifts anyone has ever extended to me, an I am well in my age! Thank You and God Bless You, Pastor Beam, for illuminating and restoring to hopeful health millions of souls.

I enjoyed every page. A must read for anyone whoever experienced any guilt. As Christians some of us really believe we guilt is what we must live with. Joe Beam shows how to break these chains that bound us and to know we are saved by The Blood of Christ.

I bought this book because Alan Robertson recommended it. Really opened my eyes and heart to understanding where the debilitating feeling of guilt comes from.

One of the things I love about Joe, his books, and his retreats is that he does not give hall passes to anyone. He acknowledges the absolute necessity for guilt and the need to make amends, atonement for your sins - for bringing honesty into your relationship with God and with others. When Joe spoke of his testimony, he spoke of receiving forgiveness but also of walking a long road afterward to transformation. He did not say "Alyce and I got back together and everything was fine. He said that we forgave each other and worked very hard together for a number of years to fall in love with each other again. Those tedious explanatiions of guilt help identify to whom and for what you need to ask forgiveness. When sin occurs many people are hurt - there was a reason that God said our sins are visited upon our children - family, friends, co-workers, other Christians who watch from the outside about how we live our life. Without those tedious explanations, we could confess to something that touched the surface but never led to true transformation. There are a lot of people in the world who would like to find 10 easy steps to freedom from guilt forever. Unfortunately, those who use that method will also find 10 easy steps back. Understanding why you sinned, spending some time examining your heart and mind, tedious, boring hard, painful stuff is what will truly set you free from guilt and produce forgiveness, not only from others but towards yourself. It is so easy to walk back through the same door you walked out of if you do not spend the time doing the tedious work. I am grateful for Joe's boooks and his heart and his ministry.
