Our three children grew-up in NW Warren, MI, nearly across our street from -- and were friends with -- the Kowynia family ... including their daughter Barbara who became Mrs. Nick George, a wife and mother was found dead / murdered execution style July 13, 1990 ... shortly after my having moved June 15, 1990, from that Detroit hometown area of mine to wNC ... where I knew so little so long about that tragedy ... until Amber Hunt wrote this book published August 2010. So regardless, it rates as immensely informative with me.

From what I know of the case, the book is an accurate depiction of the events. I have known the George's since they opened the store in Windber, PA in the 90's, and I am still taken aback by this story.
I came across this book while looking for updates on the case as I have moved out of state and have not had a chance to visit the shop on Graham Ave.

The book does seem rushed to be published as it ends up in the air before the second conviction and the various appeals. So unfortunately it isn't the whole story.

I've been reading true crime mysteries for over 20 years. I feel I know what it takes to achieve a 5 Star rating.

First you need a story that is somewhat interesting. I would suggest any author thinking about writing a true crime MYSTERY read a book like Carlton Stowers "Careless Whispers", Darcy O'Brien's "Two of a Kind", Jerry Bledsoe's "Bitter Blood", Daniel Keys "Unveiling Claudia" or the "Minds of Billy Mulligan" or anything written by the late Tommy Thompson. Or if you don't want to read truly 5 Star True Crime Mysteries then look at any of the many crime documentaries on TV like 48 Hours and you will see that they don't tell you who committed the crime and why they committed the crime in the first 5 minutes. This book did that.

The rest of the book was just filler material going into too much detail about every single player involved in this case. Fully 2/3's of the book was endless court testimony with each chapter being the next day in court.

I could go on but you get the picture. Nothing unique or interesting... all mostly filler material after page 8. Boring writing. It took the cops 18 years to get their man but it appeared they finally had him as soon as you read page 8.

This book was not a "pager turner" but a book where you turned the pages just to get through it.

I like the way the author writes. Believable the story showed just how our justice system works. Slow, slow and slower.

This book should not have been published until the case was finalized. George was granted a new trial and reconvicted in 2011 - and the appeals have yet to be exhausted. As another credible reviewer noted, the book was more like a never-ending newspaper article. It's a very interesting case, if written properly. I know - I sat through the entire first trial and assisted Judge Biernat as a staff attorney. He agonized over this case; he was an honorable and fair jurist. He 's not the first judge, nor the last, to be late to the bench, but he's conscientious and deeply involved in doing the right thing. He's now retired and did not preside over George's second trial. George's convictions were wrong.

I liked this book and I still don't know after trying to find information on the case whether Michael George was ever in court again about his wife's murder. I don't always like the cold case trials ending because a lot of people seemed to be judged by their lifestyle. Quite a few times I've thought I couldn't convict on such little evidence, especially after so many years. How could you covict someone to spend the rest of their lives in prison with even a little doubt is beyond me. A good read.
