The Last Confession: A Crime Novel (Mike Coletti Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 38 ratings

Plagued by nightmares of a past murder, a Philadelphia detective must find the true killer in a crime novel that “starts with a bang and doesn’t let up” (Booklist).

Having come of age on the mob-controlled streets of 1960’s South Philly, Detective Mike Coletti learned early to walk the fine line between cops and criminals. That skill served him well during his thirty-one years in homicide. But it never stopped the nightmares.

Ten years ago, Coletti arrested a priest for a grizzly triple murder in a Catholic church. The screams in the sanctuary still haunt his dreams, as do terrifying hints that justice was never served. Now, on the eve of Coletti’s retirement, the priest is about to be executed—and a final nightmare reveals the truth. And Coletti’s private nightmare come true as the real killer reemerges to turn Philadelphia upside down . . .

To stop the execution of an innocent man, Coletti must catch a mysterious killer who calls himself the Angel of Death. As the chase winds through art galleries and gritty streets, ancient prophecies and holy ground, the game intensifies, cultures collide, and Philly’s best detective is forced to face his nightmarish past—a past that could very well destroy him.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Dreams of the angel of death haunt crusty, nearly retired Philadelphia homicide detective Michael Coletti in this so-so serial killer mystery. When a gunman calling himself "the angel of death" kills three people in a church, Fr. Thomas O'Reilly winds up convicted of the murders. Despite solid evidence against the priest, Coletti has his doubts as O'Reilly's execution nears 10 years later. Suddenly, the killer is back committing similar crimes, appearing and disappearing as if by magic. Coletti, new partner Charles Mann, and state police profiler Mary Smithson race against O'Reilly's execution date and still more killings in a desperate effort to catch the culprit. Clues dropped by the angel of death pointing to a personal connection with Coletti and some of his previous cases add to the detective's guilt. Jones (Payback) nails his Philadelphia setting and the hard role of cops, but his unlikely plot resolution may leave readers feeling cheated. (Nov.) (c)

From Booklist

Haggard, hard-edged, combative, and a loner, Philadelphia PD Detective Mike Coletti has been haunted for a decade by a recurring dream of the shotgun slaughter of three people in a Catholic church. It was his case, and a priest was convicted of the murders based on solid forensic evidence, but his dream tells him that the Angel of Death was responsible—and that the priest, on death row, is innocent. Mere weeks before Coletti’s retirement, the seemingly preternatural Angel of Death appears and declares war on Coletti and the city. The Last Confession starts with a bang and doesn’t let up, but Jones, a columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News, also manages to develop a cadre of complex characters and a knowing, compelling, tragic, and ultimately loving portrait of his city. The surprise ending will indeed surprise, but it may strain credulity, too. That said, many readers who finish this thriller will seek out Jones’ three previous novels about cops, crime, and life in the City of Brotherly Love. --Thomas Gaughan

Mike Coletti is a veteran Philadelphia Detective haunted by a triple-murder that he responded to 30-years earlier. Weeks away from retirement, he investigates a new series of murders that indicates that the original killer may have returned days before the scheduled execution of the priest that Coletti helped convict. Partnered with a young gun (Charles Mann), loner Coletti must prove that the priest is innocent while the killer is coming after him. The story is fast-paced and hard to put down. The characters are memorable and authentic.

As a Philadelphia resident for the past 20 years, I appreciated the way that the neighborhoods and personalities are woven throughout the story. When I pass through the areas mentioned in the novel, it is easy to imagine Coletti and Mann interacting with the "real" characters on the street. The ending surprised me and I immediately reread it to look for clues that I initially missed. I originally bought a copy of this at a local book signing in 2010 and then purchased the kindle edition because my hard copy was circulating to friends and relatives. With limited free time I am a dedicated ebook reader on my tablet and phone so that I always have what I am currently reading with me, but Solomon Jones is one of the few authors that I continue to purchase printed versions of their new releases at local book stores.

The chapter had me loudly exclaming "Oh My God's" & Wow's"... I was sooo shocked but immensely entertained. Thank you for your brilliant writing 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽.

I heard this reviewed on NPR and having lived the first 64 years of my life in the greater Philadelphia area, I just had to order this book. When it finally arrived, I discovered that it took place in parts of the city I was very familiar with, which made it even more fun. It was difficult to put it down once I started it - I needed to find out what was going to happen. I won't say anymore to spoil the ending!

Did not enjoy the story. Very slow. I forced my self to finish it. Can't believe theres a part two. I thought Solomon Jones would be my favorite writer, when I read Pipe Dreams. That was a very good read.

Solomon, you have put out yet another story that pulls you in and you don't want to put it down til you have finished the book. Very detailed, as usual. Can't wait to get started on the next book. I will definitively recommend this book as I have the others. I see a movie or series possibly.

Solomon Jones takes the reader on a wild ride as the protagonist chases a killer throughout the city. It is amazing and shocking how the ending is something no one could ever expect.
