Stuck in Halftime: Reinvesting Your One and Only Life Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 27 ratings

Since the release of Halftime in 1994, more than 150,000 people have purchased that book and begun a journey from success to significance.

In a way that no one could have predicted, Halftime started a widespread movement viewing midlife as an opportunity rather than a crisis. It helped men and women between the ages of 35 and 50 realize they may have another thirty years of active, vibrant living ahead of them. And, according to author Buford, retirement is not the optimal option. But now, many of the people who began the journey from success to significance have found themselves sidetracked, stuck in the middle of their transition.

Stuck in Halftime coaches readers how to get past the barriers that stand in their way to maturity and fulfillment. It outlines eight "myths of halftime" and explains the new set of rules for this second half of life's journey. Combining practical guidance with personal stories of people who have become "unstuck," Stuck in Halftime renews the vision and determination of those who heard the "still, small voice of God" calling them to a life of significance.

Amazon.com Review

In any game, the second half is the most crucial one. With the charisma of a motivational coach, bestselling author Bob Buford exhorts successful 40-plus readers who are yearning for meaning to avoid getting "stuck in halftime." The second half of life is the time to self-analyze, make adjustments, stick with a plan, keep moving forward, and never give in to the temptation to relax or quit. Buford, a second-halfer himself and the founder of Leadership Network, a support ministry for pastors and church leaders, blends both success and failure stories, anecdotes, Web resources, and wisdom from his previous books, (Halftime and Game Plan) to spur readers to action. In the three sections of this compact volume, he examines why people get stuck in the second half, gives practical advice for getting unstuck, and offers help for living a second half with significance. An ideal, purposeful second half is one where work, meaning, and happiness merge, and readers can be fully engaged in activities that match their skills, capacity, and mission, he writes. If these factors are in place, Buford believes second-halfers will find satisfaction in work that adds meaning and purpose to life. "The second half is where the joy is," he writes. --Cindy Crosby

From Booklist

Sensing growing frustration with work life and yearning to do something meaningful and worthwhile instead, Buford has become a guru for overachieving Christian Baby Boomers. His Halftime (1994) struck a chord with many who had succeeded beyond their wildest dreams, only to feel empty inside. Now he explores the second half of life, when, he says, achievement can be replaced with a sense of purpose. The first of the book's three sections deals with "being stuck" and why it isn't as bad as it sounds, the second reveals how to get "unstuck," and the third helps one decide whether significant change is truly wanted. Buford offers much practical advice and addresses such sensitive issues as how one determines success; but like all self-help books, this one isn't for everyone. Its incessantly optimistic tone--it often reads like a pep talk, albeit with strong Christian overtones--will put off many. Others, though, may find it contains just the right combination of insight and motivation to get the adrenaline flowing again. June Sawyers
