Chapter One
So You Want to Be a Warrior?
Welcome to the path of the warrior. This book is your guide to growing both physically and mentally into a warrior. What is a warrior? One definition is someone who engages in or desires combat, but I believe history's greatest warriors show us that being a warrior is more about gaining control over oneself in all aspects of life.
There have been many famous cultures of the past that glorified the warrior. The Spartans, the Romans, the Persians, the Knights Templar, the Mongols, the Vikings, and the Samurai were societies that were famous for the development of their warriors. The legends of those warriors have been passed down because of the impact they made on the consciousness of the world.
The warrior tradition is still alive today. Since every generation has its warriors, we may have just lost sight of how to recognize one. A new breed of warrior has, in fact, exploded onto the landscape of the world through the vehicle of mixed martial arts. These men and women will be the role models that future generations will use as a gauge of their own warrior status. There is nothing more primal and intriguing than watching two men battle it out in a ring or cage to decide one winner and one loser. Even though this new warrior may not be battling in a life-or-death situation, the chief attributes of these modern-day warriors are the same as those of the warriors of the past.
Whether one is a fighter or just wants to train like one, anyone can develop the fitness of body and strength of character of a warrior. This book was designed to bring out the warrior in all of us. Do you think you have what it takes to be a warrior? What is the legacy you want to leave behind for future generations? You will find that the workouts in this book will test, not only your body, but also your mind. In order for you to someday be a warrior, this book is going to ask just one thing of you: all that you have. Upon completion of these warrior workouts, you will be a physically harder and mentally stronger warrior no matter what your endeavor. It is then that you will be taking your first steps down the path of the warrior.

The training exercises range from beginner level to advanced intensity. You will not be able to do all of these exercises at first. I like that aspect because it gives you goals and challenges to work toward.
Another thing I like about this book is that the exercises are not simply routines with free wieghts or demonstrations on machines at a gym. There are many alternative strength training techniques which do not require a much, if any, additional equipment.
A great aspect of Traing For Warriors is that these excersises target many muscles within a muscle group and not just a single muscle. This allows you to build and strengthen your target muscle(s) together with core, stablizer, and secondary muscles, as opposed to isolating a single muscle. Ultimately that is the best way to achieve the strength of necesary to be a competetive MMA fighter.
Lastly there is some very thorough and detailed information regarding how to diet. It even lays out meal plans for diffent types of diets, whether you be cutting, maintaining, or adding wieght.
Overall I rate the information and techniques in this book very high. I would definitely recommend it to anyone in search of a deeper knowlege of how to properly train to enter the MMA world. This book will serve as a valuable reference time and time again.
The beginning of the book offers a brief and quick introduction to mixed martial arts.
The rest of the book is divided into areas of the body, similar to other fitness books. For example, chapter 8 shows an array of exercises for the chest and shoulders, while chapter 10 shows back exercises. Here's a sampling of some of the topics covered.
Chapter 6 Warrior warm-up
chapter 7 Warrior neck training
Chapter 8 Warrior chest and shoulders
Chapter 9 Warrior arm and hand
Chapter 10 Warrior back
Chapter 11 Warrior abdominals
Chapter 12 Warrior heart and lung
Chapter 13 Warrior hip
Chaptet 14 Warrior glutes and quads
Chapter 15 Warrior hamstringCchapter 16 Warror foot and ankle
Chapter 17 Warrior flexibility
There are also brief sections on cutting back your weight to meet a certain weight class, nutrition, and injury prevention. There's also an 8 week Warrior Workout plan at the end.
