"4.5 Fairies! I absolutely loved this story! Not only is the premises unique the author describes everything in such intricate detail that I could easily picture the underground island... I can't wait to see what happens to the other girls who were pulled from the surface." JBP Reviews, December 2012

"5 ANGELS! Michelle M. Pillow has created a wonderful beginning to what is sure to be another tremendous series...This is definitely a series you will want to grab. Lords of the Abyss: The Mighty Hunter instantly grabs the reader's attention and does not let go until the last page is told. What an experience: one truly worth reading with an ending that will leave readers overwhelmed with a sensational feeling. 5 Angels!" Shayley, FAR

"The Mighty Hunter is an interesting novel (that) should appeal to readers interested in mythology, and merfolk. The merpeople are well-characterized, and this impelled a deeper interest in the story. They're not simply one-dimensional story props." Annie, Joyfully Reviewed

"4 STARS! When reading The Mighty Hunter, you will fall into the magical world .. This story brings a new and exciting twist to the myth that is Atlantis, and I was quite pleased to read it." Stacey, JERR, May 2006

"4 CUPS! extremely satisfying" Jenn, Coffeetime, May 2006

Bridget is a researcher on a ship off the coast of Florida. She has loved the sea since she was a child! Their boat gets attacked by a sea monster and torn to shreds. She is rescued by a Merman and taken to their underwater city of Ataran. Caderyn takes Bridget to their healer to help her recover from her near drowning. When she wakes up Caderyn is given guardianship of her, since he rescued her. It is his duty to see to her needs and safety until she decides who she wants to marry. Being a scientist, Bridget has a little trouble believing all of this is real. She is constantly questioning everything and everyone. Caderyn may have been a little vague on what his responsibility is with her. She loses her temper one night in the dining hall and they accidentally become married! This is a wonderful tale of Caderyn and Bridgets journey through her acceptance of her new reality. There is lots of humor and twists and turns. A must read!

No need for me to summarize the book, its been done plenty, so lets get into the nitty gritty of it.

Pros
-The Mer. I fell the book right off the bat for the simple reason that this was different amongst the paranormal romance genre. I like a good vampire story, I favorite the the shifters (particularly wolves) but the fact that this has MERMEN? I was sold. You dont get many mer people stories, and I peaked my interest really quick

-World building. Im sucker for world building, I love being transported into a new culture, a new time, a new place, so on and so forth. Pillow does an amazing job taking you some place entirely new, and introducing you to a new kind of people and culture. I liked learning about the history of the Mer, their curse/punishment, and how their relationships and society works. I liked learning about the neat perks and unique abilities of the mer race. The Lords of the Abyss series is strong when it comes to world building, nothing cookie cutter here. All fun and original!

-Character development. I love the characters Pillow has written, I was smitten with the mermen Caderyn, but the secondary cast was developed enough and tanalizing enough in this story for me to want to read about the other Hunters, Warriors and so forth. I liked Caderyn and how he comes to understanding of his feelings for Birdget, and good portion of the story I liked Bridget. I liked Caderyn's alpha-ness, but his jealousy streak was also fun to watch. I liked Bridget's whit and smarts, but it was also a downfall for her through out the story. Despite the character issues I had with Bridget, she managed to grow out of them was quite likeable for me by the end of the story.

-Love, love, love and more love. Yeah, I admit it freely: the steamy love scenes were a total bonus for me. No harm, no foul here. They were tasteful in their own right, nothing too raunchy or over played, just enough of everything to make it all work.

Cons

-The only thing I disliked about this book, and probably the reason it held this book back from a five star review, was Bridget's attitude. I get it, youre a scientist, you want fact and reason, and proof for everything Caderyn is telling you. But when you think Bridget has enough proof and fact, and she even admits at some point she simply believes Caderyn, she turns right around and goes back to disbelieving and wanting more proof. It was an up and down, and constant roller coaster of acceptance and disbelief throughout the story that I began to grow tired of it. When we FINALLY see Bridget accept the belief of the mer existence and exile, then Bridget has several other things she wants to worry about: How can she still be a scientist, why does she have to be (caution, possible spoiler) turned into a mermaid, ect, ect. Bridget literally was fighting everything about the mer, and her acceptance about, at every turn, she couldnt just let something be and move onto her new life. Bridget wanted to cling, and desperately, to whatever was her past. Its a normal human reaction, I understand, but Bridget kind of took it over board. There are also several instances where Bridget's reactions were WAY to dramatic. (Again, possible SPOILER) Really, you just STABBED yourself out of pure anger and rage? Some of Bridget's reactions had me groaning at her stupidity. Again, I understand that some of these dramatic reactions were used to move the plot, or her relationship with Caderyn, forward but that doesnt mean I cant think she was a drama queen a good portion of the time.

All in all, its a fantastic story and I enjoyed every bit of it! It comes highly recomended to those who like romance, paranormal, mermaid/mermen, even fairy tale retellings.

Bridget is a scientist on a ship off the coast of Florida. Their boat is attacked and destroyed. She is rescued by Caderyn and taken to their underwater city of Ataran. Bridget has a little trouble believing all of this is real, being a scientist she questions everything and it gets a bit annoying at times. This is a wonderful romantic story and of acceptance to a fantastic new world. A definite must read!

Bridget Dutton is a scientist working who’s dream involves staying and unmasking all the hidden secrets of the ocean. Though her dream is not taking chemical samples of the oceans water, she will do whatever it takes in order to accomplish her dream of studying the great abyss. When her boat is suddenly attacked from below, quickly destroying and sinking the ship she knows the end is near, when a mysterious stranger rescues her from within the water and takes her to his home.

Caderyn the Hunter has longed to find a wife to live out the loneliness of his life. An ancient curse set long ago, Caderyn and his people are forced to remain in the abyss in the submerged city. They are Merr people and though they live forever, they wish to share their forever with someone they love. The Merr people live within the abyss and suffer from one key issue: loneliness. Forced to live within the ocean, they do not have the capability of meeting new men and women who may want to be their wives. As the hunters patrol the waters for threats, they are ordered to try and save any women who is close to drowning and bring them to the city to live. Caderyn has finally found and saved a women from certain death but how can he convince his hard headed scientist that they are in fact underwater.

This was a fun and interesting read. I enjoyed the fact that we had Merr people as I have yet to read a book involving mermaids. It was great fun and made me, of course, think of The Little Mermaid. It was easy to relate to Bridget as she could not possibly believe all of what Caderyn told her especially given the scientific nature of her thinking. I found her intriguing and albeit a little annoying at times, but it worked with her character.

Caderyn was an interesting character and while he was described as eye candy, I really had no feel for him as a character. He seemed like a statue with little to no feelings or emotions. In the end, it was easier to see how he did have some emotions but they were poorly executed in my opinion, as I never quite felt he wanted a wife as much as he claimed too in the beginning.

It was also very confusing how the whole “you are now my wife” thing came up when Bridget denounced Caderyn as her guardian. I still don’t quite understand what that was all about and it could really use some more explanations. Furthermore, though they touched on the whole children concept, not much was revealed and it really bothered me because I was curious as to what was wrong that did not allow them to really reproduce. Especially given how the book ended.

Nevertheless, it was still an interesting read which I enjoyed and enjoyed enough that I still picked up the second book because I want to see what will happen to our other hunters!

I’ve read a couple of the later Lords of the Abyss books which I loved but it was great to finally read the first in the series! A great storyline with characters that you can warm too. Bridget was so stubborn in the beginning, that I wanted to scream at her but in contrast, Caderyn was so very patient and so in love. I want a Caderyn! Lovely to see how their relationship develops. Plenty of action and steamy romance and if you like a HEA…you’ve also got that! I flicked between the ebook and audio which was great as I enjoy Rebecca Cook’s narration. If you’re looking for something a little different, entertaining and light, try this series. You won’t regret it!

Great story a little too short though. The female character was kinda emotional which is understandable but to go running off alone not a smart girl for a scientist

Interesting take on the Atlantis story. The Merr are an interesting take on mermaids and it is fascinating that they rescue mostly young beautiful women.
