The Roadmap to 100: The Breakthrough Science of Living a Long and Healthy Life 1st Edition, Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

With a baby boomer turning sixty every ten seconds, we are rapidly becoming an aging society. But cutting edge research on the connection between age and disease shows us that many of the preconceptions we had about how to grow old need a second look. This groundbreaking book is full of take-away prescriptive advice which the nearly seventy-five million boomers in this nation will value. Top gerontologist and Stanford medical school professor Dr. Walter Bortz and co-author Randall Stickrod draw on new science and a thirty-year longitudinal study of centenarians to show that:

• Genetics plays a smaller role in aging than previously thought

• Senility, dementia, and other diseases of the elderly, are largely preventable and not an inevitable consequence of aging

• Engagement, through sexual relationships, social interaction, and professional activity, is a key factor in long, healthy lives

• Physical fitness can recover at least 30 years of aging

Filled with in-depth insight and practical advice,
The Roadmap to 100 gives you the power to control your own destiny and live well beyond 100.

“Bortz's thinking and writing is deep, penetrating, funny and totally motivating.”—Runner’s World

“Bortz is on a mission. He wants everyone to get fit and realize their human potential, which he believes means living to be 100 years old for many people.”—San Jose Mercury News

“Presents solid, peer-reviewed research that confirms the belief that fitness – not antioxidant supplements, or gene and hormone therapy, or the latest "super fruit" – is the key to extending and improving life. “—The Sacramento Bee

"If you want to reach your hundredth birthday with a clear mind and a strong body, this is your textbook."--Erica Jong "Wally Bortz shows how to grow old with dignity, wisdom, and good health. His work is important, his passion for life undimmed."--Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation

“Physician and aging researcher, Dr. Wally Bortz from the Stanford Medical School makes a solid case for how we can dramatically impact our own lifelong health through vigorous and sustained exercise. He draws on cutting edge science that shows that we get weaker as the decades pass, not necessarily due to aging, but rather because we don’t challenge our bodies enough. The Roadmap to 100 shows how staying engaged cuts across all fields – exercising, socializing, keeping sexuality alive – can prolong your life for many decades. This is a fantastic book and Bortz is a true trailblazer.”--Ken Dychtwald, Ph.D., author of Bodymind, Healthy Aging, The Age Wave a...

This book provides great, detailed instructions on how to live and healthy, long life. You may or may not live to be 100 years old (the author died in his early 90s) but if you follow them you will live a healthy life. I highly recommend reading this book and following the instructions it contains.

Dr. Bortz covered a huge area and highly controversial subjects but overall he did great honest view for human complex body. Dr. Bortz ran his marathon 7 or 8 miles covering 26.2 miles which is absolutely admirable. He gave us such a good inspirations for all of us. Most of his writing concise and easily explained. Degrading his marathon effort has no justification or not very good taste. Obesity has caused national deficit and increasing rapidly. I truly convince that this book should be a required book for the middle or high school. Dr bortz book is easy to understand and really helpful for us, average reader. I ran 5 marathons in the last 13 months with 3 out of 5 in barefoot. I am only 72 in 70 days. I ran like Dr. Bortz 2013 Boston marathon only stopped at 40 km because of bombing. It took me 4:18 minutes which was to me feel like forever. Running slow is one thing but running for long hours is really harder. I am not sure I could run or walk for 8 hours like Dr. Bortz. It is such an uncomfortable feeling criticizing or degrading his effort to complete his marathon. Instead, to me, he is an inspiration for all of us. I retired because my body was in mess physically. Instead of taking medicine and surgery, I took chance by taking ownership over my health. I did mostly as in his book without even knowing Dr. bortz name. So many his opinion are not common senses to me. I would like highly recommend this book. At worst, you may waist $16. 17 but you may change your life too like me! Had I read this book even few months before I would have saved so many agonies and injuries. At Boston running seminar, I heard Dr.Bortz received a standing ovation after his speech which is unheard of. Man has devoted his career for the well being of the people, a truly remarkable human being!

I read this book, better yet studied this book, almost a year ago when doing research for my own fitness and health book, Forever Fit and Fabulous: A Guide to Health and Vigor--Even at 70 and Beyond. Dr. Bortz is one of those rare longevity experts who practices what he preaches. He is 80-years-old, has been running marathons for 40 years, and ran the last one at age 80!
I am 70-years-young myself, so I appreciate his efforts at 80. My goal is to be as capable as he is when I'm his age. Thank you, Dr. Bortz. YOu inspired me to get back to jogging and to increase my weight loads.

Clear, sequential, funny and to the point, Not an armchair author, but a real MD
who could easily sit in his big house on the hill...

Instead, he continues to share his wealth of practical information.

There is no real dictation of a new lifestyle, but simply a ' here is what may happen if you
try a few changes and here is what may happen if you don't.' It;s up to you ...

This book was an in depth look at holistic health and happiness. It's only repetitive if you aren't paying attention to the shocking and empowering scientific studies that pervade this book. This should be mandatory reading!

Walter M. Bortz II MD is my role model. This gerontologist knows what it takes to reach that magic milestone. This latest work (co-written with Randal Stickrod) mirrors the material contained in his earlier books "We Live Short and Die Too Long" and "Dare to be 100". Anyone who aspires to "live long and prosper" would do well to follow this splendid map to "100".

Not very fascinating and mostly review. Our food choices are largely swayed by advertising and politically funded fake food pyramids that destroy our health, starting at birth, so that its a subject hard to no cover, when we are talking about longevity.

Yes regular exercise and reduced caloric intake are crucial factors but one reading a book like this, already should know that. I expected more substance in this read. However, the science behind the subject is good, but boring as well.
