Fully Present: The Science, Art, and Practice of Mindfulness Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 234 ratings

From Buddhist traditions to daily exercises, enhance your physical and mental health with the ultimate practical guide to mindfulness from two leading experts.

Mindfulness -- the art of paying attention with an open and curious mind to present-moment experiences--has attracted ever-growing interest and tens of thousands of practitioners, who have come to the discipline from both within and outside the Buddhist tradition. In
Fully Present, leading mindfulness researchers and educators Dr. Sue Smalley and Diana Winston provide an all-in-one guide for anyone interested in bringing mindfulness to daily life as a means of enhancing well-being. Fully Present provides both a scientific explanation for how mindfulness positively and powerfully affects the brain and the body as well as practical guidance to develop both a practice and mindfulness in daily living, not only through meditation but also during daily experiences, such as waiting in line at the supermarket, exercising, or facing difficult news.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

You wouldn't go through your day after having left your leg at home, so why are so many of us living lives with our minds left behind? Smalley, a former professor of biology, and Winston, a former Buddhist nun, answer this question and enable readers to remedy the absent-minded lifestyle. As founder/director and director, respectively, of UCLA's Mindful Awareness Research Center, the authors draw on their experience of bringing mindfulness to the masses and present the scientific side of mindfulness with an artful approach that results in a well-rounded synthesis accessible to scholars and laymen alike. Research studies, personal accounts, and practical applications illuminate mindfulness as a form of meditation; with activities as simple as breathing, listening, and walking, the practice can be easily incorporated into any lifestyle. Though a surprisingly extensive list of benefits from mindfulness is supported by what current research exists, the authors simultaneously acknowledge that more needs to be done and they find encouragement in positive results that reveal mindfulness as a simple yet profound solution to daily problems. Smalley and Winston will pique interest in living a completely present life, even if what that means has yet to be fully understood.

I read this book with an open mind. I tried the meditation practices for only a short time and have truely experienced life changing results. I have been a worrier my entire adult life. My inability to have a calm and relaxed state of mind has made enjoying my life very difficult . . . until I read this book. If you want to ENJOY YOUR LIFE then READ THIS BOOK! I cannot begin to explain all of the benefits. It will teach you why and how to let go of needless worry. I've bought 2 extra copies to give to family members. I cannot beleive that at 48 years old I can and have changed my outlook on life in such a simple way. The key to happiness has been my own mind and I did not even know it. Join me. Its wonderful.

Very well written and documented book that includes in the "notes" a Bibliography. Also includes an index. I bought both the Kindle version to read on the go, then purchased the hard copy to highlight parts for possible future reference. Being a beginner in Mindfulness, the reviews on the back of the book were so right on. John Kabat-Zinn, author/Lecturer, for whom I have high regards for, states: "A highly readable, informed, and elegant synthesis". The other reviewers were equally supportive of the true nature of the book. The authors experience and history is reflected in this excellent well written book. This is one book that will be tested for the strength of its binding. Thanks to the Authors for sharing their work.

This is a book about the science and art of mindfulness written by a scientist and an artist, of sorts. The authors are colleagues at UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC) www.marc.ucla.ed. Early on, the authors give a definition, “Mindfulness may be thought of as a state of consciousness, one characterized by attention to the present experience with a stance of open curiosity.” Mindful Awareness Practices (MAP) describe meditation and relaxation techniques in this book. “Mindfulness changes your relationship with life.” How? In this book, the authors describe what mindfulness does and why it works (the science) and how to do it (the art). For example, science has demonstrated that mindfulness reduces stress and chronic pain; it fortifies our ability to cope with painful events, fear, greed and anger; it improves attention and positive emotions (like happiness and compassion); and it improves interpersonal skills, creativity, and performance at work, school, and play.

This is a wonderful book and I would highly recommend it for anyone who is looking to deepen their experience of life. I recently read Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness, the Program of the Stress Reduction Clinic a [FULL CATASTROPHE LIVING] [Paperback] by Jon Kabat Zinn. This covers some of the same ground on mindfulness and meditation but it has a thoroughly modern feel and speaks to our fast paced technology filled times. I enjoyed the dual approach of presenting the science of a particular topic then the art. And it presents many useful and easy to learn practices. It's a very accessible book and one that I think nearly everyone would get something out of to improve the quality of their lives.

This is such a great beginner's guide to mindfulness and meditation. I loved the way each chapter was broken into a science section (with studies and data to back up concepts), an art section (with insights and anecdotal experiences to make concepts clearer) and a practice section, with one or two meditations or experiments for readers to try at home. This book is filled with wisdom but it's very approachable. I had many 'aha' moments.

What did I like: the book has an incredible density of knowledge and combines Meditation, Mindfulness, Psychology, Neuroscience and much more.
    - It shows you scientifically, why do practice mindfulness
    - It teaches you in a practical way, how to learn mindfulness and what to take care of
    - It gives you many practical advice that probably would cover 50 sessions with a Psychologe

What did I dislike: There are many repetitions (I am German and this is in general an American thing I guess, but here it was really a lot of repetitions). Also I dislike that the book is not translated into German! -> would like to spread it all over Germany :)

This book is a precious gift to humanity.
'Nuff said, but I'll keep going because I want to.
I honestly believe that the world would benefit exponentially if the curriculum of high schools around the globe would teach a mandatory class with the contents of this book. Everyone needs to read this...If only Oprah Winfrey would say it...
It's a guide to living good, a 'How to' and a 'Why to' guide that is laid out in a very easy to read and refer back to form. If you're a proud person who thinks you already know how to live good, buy it anyway because you'll learn something new and beneficial. It is more than the typical 'think good thoughts' advice that you find in any given self help book. The authors here remember that we're human, so the suggestions are very realistic and the truths expressed (I find) are the ones that you've always felt and sought to understand.
Well seek no more my friends because you'll be learning about yourself and everyone else around you, but you'll also be accepting those things, which feels really good.
Read this and apply it to your world and you'll be really living.
