I've been pretty avidly on the trail of enneagram information that I can relate to and apply. This is one of the best books I've come across. I especially appreciate how the different types are described in both work situations and love relationships with examples of one type with another (example: a 4 employee with a boss who's an 8). Because of my enthusiasm for the book, I did a quick read and then promptly lent my copy to someone else. I'm already wanting it back. This is a book that won't stay on the shelf year after year. It's much more the kind of book that is so packed with information that I'll read and re-read it, sections at a time, for years to come. I'd consider it a must read for anyone intrigued by the enneagram.

Helen Palmer has an intuitive way of explaining the numbers. If you are a student of the Enneagram, this is a great book to read after you have memorized the basic concepts, because it will take you a bit farther on your journey. But only once you have the basic concepts down. By the way, I'm a six. Happy reading, beautiful soul.

This book is a good explanation of how the enneagram types relate to one another. It was helpful to be able to see my spouse and I in a clearer way and to understand why we do the "things" we do. I am retired but I think it would have been great help in my work place.

I have found this resource a tremendous help in understanding the strengths and challenges of relationships. The text combines one of 9 different personalities with one other of the 9 different personalities and explains what the strengths and challenges are in a relationship between the two people and why. (For example, a perfectionist personality with a boss personality.) It is a great way to learn how to accentuate the positive and accept the challenges that exist in ALL relationships.

The book is easy to understand & is written in an engaging style. I have many other books on the enneagram & I can see this will become one of my favorites.

I found this book to be just “ok”. Other books out there seem to be more well rounded in their descriptions. I have a question: What enneagram type is Helen Palmer?

This is one of the best books on the Enneagram I have read. I have purchased three copies of it over the years, but have given two of them away. This third copy is for my library, and I intend to keep it . . . unless I give it away.

5.0 out of 5 stars insightful, time efficient, especially if you just want to figure out stressful issues in one friendship/ relationship!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 10, 2013
with this book, acutually with mainly one chapter I learned to understand the reasons for some past difficult friendships much better, gain insights in how to behave differently in future if ever working or being a close friend with the same Enneagram type again. Interestingly I figured out that some of my past friendships which initially started well, but became stressful -unlike other close long-term friendships- had all been with the same Enneagram type (8) and had all a common problem which made them "suddenly uneasy". Only when I learned more of the Enneagram I figured out that these few close friends were/ are type 8`s and that the stress always started when I felt under pressure from them to do something they felt was the only right thing to do... often unasked advice, often it was an absolut "no go option / solution" ..... often the type 8 friends got really angry at me and started persuading + with an aggressive communication style....which made me - a type 9 - even more resistant than ever before. I bought this book in order to gain a deeper insight into the encounters in love and work relationships of various Enneagram types and in order to figure how to cope better in future with situations like the ones mentioned above. Obviously a lot of the problems one specific type encounters at work or in relationships with another type can be figured out with some of the other Enneagram books and have been absolutely eye-opening already. But I found that this book brought more common pitfalls to the surface when different types deal with each other. It is very well structured. Plus obviously it is much easier and more time efficient if you just need to read that one chapter or paragraph which is dealing with the stressors that may occur when type x meets type y clearly + briefly explained, when you are having the tensions already. I found myself well described and benefited from the growing edges I found / read in this book. So all in all a great tool to improve certain relationships, without having to read the whole book beforehand (assuming you know your Enneagram type+ the one of the person you are struggeling with!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not quite what I needed
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 6, 2019
I’ve read lots on enneagram books. It’s good but maybe not quite what I was looking for. I was hoping for insightful questions or exercises. It’s somehow more dry than that. It follows the usual format of describing all the pairing ands interactions both reomaticalkh and at work. Just not quite as helpful as I would have liked.
