From Booklist

It's either wed or dead, so Lara MacDougall, the Maid of Lorne, chooses marrying Sebastien of Cleish as the lesser of two evils. After routing Lara's father in battle, Sebastien had been given orders by Robert the Bruce to secure Dunstaffnage Castle, Lara's home. Using Lara's two younger siblings as hostages, Sebastien convinces Lara to throw open the gates. Once inside, he states his ultimatum: marry him or be dead by nightfall. Lara vows to do her best to become a thorn in the side of her new husband. At first, she refuses to be seduced by Sebastien's kind words and soft touches, but as she gets to know her enemy better, Lara finds it more and more difficult to betray the man with whom she is falling in love. With her usual superb sense of characterization and exceptional gift for creating sizzling sexual chemistry, Brisbin fashions a splendidly satisfying medieval historical that deftly explores the themes of trust and love. I just finished reading the book "The Maid of Lorne" and I must say with the mixed reviews I wasn't sure how I would like it but I must say it was a great read. The historical accounts were true to form and circumstances that surrounds the main characters not uncommon for medieval times. People married for alliances and to gain standing. It was not about love but duty to clan and country. In the story, Lara is faced with such a choice and she chooses marriage to Sebastian as a means to stay alive and protect her family. Their marriage does not start as a marriage of love but convenience. However, as the story progresses we learn much about the main characters and their motivations. Also, there is a surprise in the ending which makes it even more of a remarkable story. I really enjoyed this unconventional love story and only regretted that I could not read more about this remarkable couple. I would recommend this book and the author. I look forward to reading more of her work.

What's an honorable heiress to do when presented the choice of dying or marrying the enemy who's conquered her castle home? Lara, Maid of Lorne, has to do whatever it takes to protect her motherless siblings, and if that means marrying Sebastien of Cleish, then that's what she'll do. But Lara won't make marriage easy for him. A clash of wills soon ensues, and as time goes on, the two began to respect each other...but will they fall in love?

An engrossing look at the time of Robert the Bruce, Terri Brisbin creates memorable characters that will pull you into caring for them. Lara is spirited and brave, and the pinnacle that holds her family and its home together. The arrival of Sebastien into her life is one of torture for her, but soon turns into one of longing. Even if you don't know the history of the medieval times, then let the enjoyable The Maid of Lorne whet your appetite for a tale of love, honor and the couple who find happiness together.

You won't want to miss reading The Maid of Lorne for stellar story-telling and memorable characters.

I almost gave up on this book at about 90% and deleted it from my kindle - the plot was that frustrating. It was not an easy lighthearted reading experience, it was very nearly painful to get through. It is well written with the possible exception of the main characters not being fleshed out enough. The story takes place during a time of war and it is the war that occupies most of the hero and heroine's thoughts. In addition to the perils of war, there is a villain involved who is evil only for the sake of being evil. The heroine does some fairly unforgivable things in this book and I tried to keep in mind that there was a war going on and difficult choices had to be made. Yet I found I could not forgive her all her lies and treachery against her husband even though she was forced to marry him. The hero came off as the much more sympathetic character even though he did initially threaten to kill her if she didn't marry him. After all the spying, fighting and grisly death of the war and the threats and treachery of the evil villain, the ending wrapped up a little too quickly and neatly.

Okay, so the hero forced the heroine to marry him. That's the way it was done in those days. As for the wedding night he did not force her. He used seduction and she fell for it. She was putty in his hands so we can't blame Sebastien for being a hunky, sexy warrior who used his skills effectively. As for Lara, she was lucky Sebastien didn't kill her for all the stupid stunts she pulled. There were moments when I wanted to hit her! I simply loved this tale of two people who despite terrible circumstances, fall in love. Downloaded it two months ago and have already read it twice.

Terri Brisbin does a remarkable job bringing to life what it could have been like during the reign of Robert the Bruce. The heroine, Lara, believing that she is protecting her father's children, loses the stronghold to Bruce's men and is forced to marry his officer, Sebastian. Her father is captured and openly berates and disowns her. Lara must come to terms with her hostile feelings toward Sebastian and the fact that her father is not the man she believed he was.

When I first began to read I wondered how Lara was going to get herself out of her horrible mess. This extremely well written account of Lara's turmoil and the caring man who captures her family's castle will change her forever...

Sebastian's loyalty to Robert the Bruce is put to the test when the wife he was commanded to marry maybe the one who betrays him. Brisbin writes historical romance at it's best.

A great story. I could hardly put it down. A knight, fighting for Robert the Bruce, is given a castle to hold, and the Laird's daughter will be wed - or dead. She marries him but secretly meets with his enemies, trying to get him to leave her holdings. Meanwhile, everyone around her, comes to like him and too late she discovers that she loves him. But will her treachery cost him his life?

I will definitely read this again. Love Terri Brisbin's work.
