The #1 New York Times bestselling author of You Betrayed Me delivers a “juicy creep-a-thon . . . [that] builds to a surprising cliffhanger ending” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

At first, it sounds like the answer to a parent’s prayers: an elite boarding school in the Oregon mountains where wayward kids turn their lives around. But behind the idyllic veneer lie disturbing rumors of missing students and questionable treatments.

Jules Farentino knows her half-sister, Shaylee, has been going off the rails lately. She’s just not sure Blue Rock Academy is the answer. Accepting a teaching position there lets Jules keep an eye on Shay, but also confirms her fears. One student is found hanged, another near death. Something sinister is at hand—and Jules may already be too late to stop it.

As a brutal snowstorm sweeps in, cutting off the remote campus from the rest of the world, Jules will discover the Academy’s dark secrets, and confront a murderous evil without limits, without remorse, without mercy . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. The murder of Julia Jules Farentino's father creates a bond with her younger half-sister, Shaylee Stillman in this juicy creep-a-thon from bestseller Jackson (Chosen to Die). That bond is tested years later when 17-year-old Shaylee is shipped off to Blue Rock Academy, an Oregon school in the middle of no-damned-where for at-risk teens. Run by iron-fisted Rev. Tobias Lynch, Blue Rock recently had a student, Lauren Conway, go missing and a female teacher dismissed for inappropriate behavior with a student. When Jules takes a teaching position at Blue Rock to rescue Shay, she discovers Cooper Trent, her ex-boyfriend, working there as an undercover PI looking into Lauren's disappearance. The scary suicide strangulation of Shay's roommate and the murder of her teaching assistant boyfriend throw the school into further uproar. Meanwhile, the Leader, the head of a secret cult at Blue Rock, plots more mayhem. This campy cool thriller builds to a surprising cliffhanger ending. (Apr.)

#1 NYT and USA TODAY bestselling author Lisa Jackson started writing after her sister read an article in TIME Magazine in 1981 about how young mothers were making money writing romance novels. Both Lisa and her sister, Nancy Bush, began their writing careers right then, and lo, these many years later Lisa has published seventy-five plus novels and has no plans to slow down anytime soon.

I always enjoy stories set in remote locations in the deep of winter, where people are stuck in the company of a killer. The setting of “Without Mercy,” then is perfect: an isolated boarding school for troubled teens, high in the Western mountains, where a storm-of-the-century-type blizzard is moving in. Our hero, Jules, gets a job there just before the storm hits, to make sure that her sister, Shay, is getting the court-ordered help and guidance she needs, and not, as Shay has said, being held captive by crazed, murderous fanatics. To her surprise, Jules finds that there are, in fact, crazed fanatics at the school, planning a coup. Meanwhile, another undercover teacher, who is there to investigate the disappearance of a woman from the school, turns out to be none other than her ex-boyfriend — someone she never really got over. Despite several areas of predictability, this is a well-plotted book, and a good read. The characterizations were a bit thin, but the story is quite gripping.

Good plot but overdoes the heroine in peril routine. The setting is excellent but the main character needs work. Why have the character do things that guarantee disaster?

The Story:
Jules has always felt protective of her half sister, Shaylee. Shaylee was only 12 when Jules' father was killed in their home. They said an intruder came in the house and killed him. Shaylee has acted out ever since, doing drugs, robbing stores, generally having a bad attitude. After she was caught robbing a store Shaylee had a choice of juvie or a rehabilitation center for troubled kids. Jules is leary about sending her there, last year a girl disappeared from the Academy. Jules keeps researching Blue Rock Academy making sure Shay will be safe. Jules receives a message from a frightened Shay begging her for a rescue, fearing for her life. Jules takes desperate measures and applys for a job at BRA, it is the only way to get closer to Shay. Once she arrives the murders start happening, fearing for both their lives Jules tries to find out what is going on, with the help of Cooper Trent. Cooper is Jules ex-boyfriend that she never got over. Trent is there doing his own investigation. Together they must find out what's really happening without being one of the victims.

Thoughts:
This was a good story. It was a little slower that the books I'm use to from Jackson. The end had my jaw dropping! Jackson has a talent of misdirection. I never even guessed who the murderer was and the other nefarious plot. The characters don't really evolve, well maybe a little. Mostly this is about Cooper and Jules trying to save everyone and get to the bottom of things. I liked the idea and the layout of the book, it was just a little slower than usual. I still liked it, I enjoyed it once it was over. There isn't much romance between Cooper and Jules, just a tiny dash, usually more in Jackson's books. It almost felt like a John Saul book with the trouble at the school, it was just missing the supernatural plot.

I am a die hard Nora Roberts fan! I actually keep all of her books, my husband had to build me a book shelve in my closet for them. I ONLY read Nora...Until I picked up a Lisa Jackson book! I have read about 5 of them so far and am still addicted. This book was yet another I couldnt put down. I am a VERY picky reader. If I start something and its boring or it isnt written well or if I just dont like it, I put it down and im finished with it. This book had all of the qualities a good book needs to keep its readers attention and I say "Good Job" to Lisa, once again. If you like Lisa Jacksons style then you should love this book!
