About the Author
Author of Skinny Thinking
Skinny Thinking grew out of Laura Katleman-Prue's desire to heal the eating, weight, and body image issues that plagued her for 35 years. She discovered that the root of her problem was the way she thought about food. In fact, changing her diet was irrelevant, if she didn't change her thinking habits. By teaching herself to go on a "thought diet" and transform her relationship with food, she experienced permanent healing. This healing motivated her to write Skinny Thinking and to lead Skinny Thinking Workshops in order to help others heal their eating issues as well.
Laura attended Pomona College and pursued graduate studies in Marketing at Boston College. In 1980, she founded the Boston Brownie Company Inc. with retail and wholesale distribution in 2,000 stores in 14 states along the eastern seaboard.
In 1992, Laura completed coursework at Lesley University in Counseling Psychology. That same year, she received a Certification in Transpersonal Psychology from the Theravision Institute. A long-time meditator, she has been teaching meditation and self-inquiry for the past four years. She began teaching Skinny Thinking Workshops in 2009.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2012This is a book I got a year or two ago. I read it when I first got it and then I read it some more over time. It's not just another diet book. I disagree with the reviewers that found nothing of worth here. If you have had a "relationship" with food like is described by the author AND you are ready to at least look at it, this is a very helpful book. It really targeted some of my unconscious wacky thinking about food and eating that has tripped me up for years.
The author suggests near the beginning of the book to read it through and then look at the steps that seem to make sense for you and that's what I've done. And it happened without my having to be regimented about it. I've begun to implement ideas and habits that were doable for me and continued to add things that became viable as time passed. I picked up this book because I knew that my extra weight had to do with my thinking. My thinking about food was different than people that were average sized. I was about 30 lbs over weight. For years I thought it was simply because I didn't get enough exercise. Then I would have periods of getting more exercise but not losing an ounce so at some point I had to toss that idea. Exercise was not the answer alone, in fact nothing is the answer alone.
This book is helping me pick apart my relationship or way of viewing food in my life so I can question those ideas and make an independent decision on whether I want to continue that behavior or not. It sounds vague I'm sure but a reader can see for themselves that reading the book which is very easy is the best way to consider the ideas that are discussed. There are no scare tactics, no must haves, or must do as some other diet books might include. Its so flexible and sensible that that might be the reason for some of the criticism. I'm really beginning to see food as "tasty fuel". That is quite a relief.
I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2014There is no one single solution to managing your weight because there is no one single reason that you might be overweight. The first step should always be to consult with your doctor. Over the years my wife and I have accumulated a small library of books on the subject. We look at this as a good addition. The approach while not simple is sensible.
The author has done a good job of laying out the information that she wants you to consider. Her writing style is clear and understandable without being overly clinical.
If you are looking for a silver bullet this is not it. If you are looking to increase your knowledge and take away a few good tools you should not be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2015This book just made so much sense to me. It spoke to my "food-loving soul" in a way other weight loss books have not. I FINALLY am eating in a healthy way: not eating until I'm stuffed, not using food to mask my feelings, and not obsessing over what I'm going to eat for my next meal. I also think that this is the first time in my adult life that I actually know the difference between hunger and craving. I know what real hunger feels like, and I don't have to be afraid of it anymore. I never even knew I felt that way until I read this book.
When people ask how I've lost weight (over 20 lbs so far), I tell them that I've "broken up with food"! It sounds silly, but that's really what it feels like. This book has changed the importance of food in my life. But... and this is the key... I can still ENJOY EATING IT! I am just not making it the center of my existence any more. It is such a joyful and freeing way to live.
I went to a wedding this weekend, drank cocktails AND enjoyed a piece of yummy cake without gaining or guilt. I could never have imagined that before. It's all because this is a lifestyle, not a diet. I'm making choices about food, not being controlled by my cravings (or being controlled by someone else's "diet rules.")
I think one of the most important revelations of the book, and one that really hit home for me, was the idea that "if you don't have 2 minutes with a particular food, it really won't impact your life." In that moment of craving, it seemed like that food in front of me (or that I was dreaming about) was the only thing in the world that would "fix" my feelings and bring me sunshine and rainbows, but that's not true! Food is not really magical! My cravings have dropped so dramatically after starting my new "food lifestyle" that I don't have to really "battle" them anymore. And this is coming from someone who used to plan vacation itineraries around restaurant visits. I never thought I could be happy, fulfilled, and losing weight at the same time. Maybe this book will help you as it has helped me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. All the information I knew in theory
Excellent book. All the information I knew in theory, however it was written in a very eye opening way with many 'a-ha' moments. I am already benefiting from reading this book, it was just what I needed to read to finally get my relationship with food in order.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok book
This book is similar to many other self help books about nutrition. For me it was a good way to repeat the knowledge i have acquired through other books like never binge again or brain over binge which is very similar.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some helpful concepts
I found the writing style of this book a bit 'wordy'. It felt like there could have been a more succinct way of writing some of the points the author was trying to make. I also found it a bit cheesy. "Wise witness" "the child", not my thing, but it got the point across what the author was trying to express.
I found the advice very helpful. I have already started to implement some of it (Am I hungry? No? So why do I want to eat xyz, am I upset/tired/bored?) Etc. Sometimes it takes the bleeding obvious to be pointed out to make that penny clang!
I would definitely recommend giving this book a read, but if you don't like all the self-help cliché terms, it might drive you a bit funny.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book, shame about the quality
Im only half way through the book as im often too busy to read. The book makes a lot of sense to me and i can relate well to it. It did take a while to arrive and when i did recieve it, it was obvious that somebody had owned it. There where sections highlighted in bright yellow, notes scribbled inside it ect. Not what i was expecting. Poor quality.
